no, they have been a couple for several years, but John has said previously that he had no plans to marry her, quoting that "marriage is the number one cause of divorce."

I also thought Rena and John were already married, or at least engaged, but apparently I was wrong. :p

Congratulations to them and I hope John's quote in the last post never comes true!

She seems to be a much more private person. I can understand that. If my husband has proposed in public, I would have been very embarassed and a little miffed. I much prefer candle light and roses.

Here is a link and a few excerpts about thier engagement from people.com

.......

As the crowd of spectators at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., read Baldwin's lips on the jumbotron, they began chanting, "Yes! Yes!" But Inoue, for one, stood there dumbfounded.

"I was shocked!" Inoue, 31, tells PEOPLE. "I saw him on one knee and thought he was going to tell me how proud he was – and then he asked me to marry him. Then I started crying and I said yes."

"I always thought we would never get married," Inoue said. "He was always saying, 'You can propose to me.' He seemed serious."

What prompted the change of heart? "When I woke up [that] morning, I decided now was the time," Baldwin explained. "We have been together as a couple for five years and everything I have accomplished is because of her. I didn't want to let anyone else have the chance."

so this might explain why she seemed less then thrilled.

To me it all played like typical John Baldwin grandstanding. Hope she's happy- she seems nice.

what's with this quote:

he pointed out, adding that he already has something in mind for their wedding bands. "She thinks of me as Snoopy and herself as Woodstock," he explained. "I'll probably do something with that.":laugh:

 to my fellow snarky snarkertons...

I thought the whole thing was a bit much - but hey, if she's happy then I wish them all the best...

But Rena always has the fake smile "before i kill you" look that mothers of bad little boys have: yes, sweetie, mommy loves you - but if you don't knock it off - I'm gonna kick your little butt right here in the middle of Target.

Granted, I'm not a big fan of the Johnster so anything he does brings out my cynical susie side... I do appreciate the fact that he acknowledges that without her, he wouldn't be considered a "serious" skater

I think you guys are being a little hard on John. Its obvious that they really love each other and he seems to me to be a genuinely nice guy. I wish them all the happiness in the world.
Here's a quote from icenetwork

"I planned on it. I wanted to do it at worlds last year, but it wasn't the right time. I decided to do it this morning after our practice," said Baldwin.

"I didn't know. He didn't tell me and didn't tell anybody. Of course, I said 'Yes.' I can't tell you how many things that we've been through together. We've gone through a lot," said Inoue.

It was a little cheezy, but basically a smart move on John's part. The TV cameras loved it (I was even getting a little teary eyed). Anything that brings in the nonfanatic skating viewer at this point is good.

First, congratulations.

Second, I think that this might have helped ratings......... A proposal is a good way to spark up publicity.

Thirdly, I give a lot of credit to John for being able to skate that program the way they did with the thought of the proposal in the back of his mind.

Aw, Snoopy and Woodstock...my kind of people. (I collect Snoopy.)

ITA that it was GOOD for TV ratings and nonfanatics--a non-fan friend just asked me about "that couple who got engaged"--apparently they were interviewd on TV this morning. And the crowd obviously loved it, and I think caught on before Rena did what he was doing. I loved the in-rink announcer saying "Obviously she said yes!"

A friend and a cousin who follow figure skating casually commented positively on it via personal e-mail.

The local news anchors on ABC also referred to it in a positive way after showing a clip of it on last night's news. They thought it was sweet & said so on air.  Is it a coincidence that they were all women who made these comments?

Congratulations to them -- I hope they get to spend many happy years together!!

That said, I don't think I would be thrilled with a public proposal. Just saying . . .

I wonder if anyone has ever said no in one of these public proposals? I would not like this to happen in public because it puts the other perosn on the spot.......maybe they feel they have to say yes at the time and then figure a way out afterwards.

Oh well, if they are happy, that's great!:)

Didn't a guy on one of those bachelor shows end up dropping both the 2 finalists at the end? Saying he could not marry either one? He sure took a lot of heat for that one.............

My girlfriend pointed out that Rena did not look happy at all in the kiss'n'cry after the proposal. Anyone else notice this?
