Joe, you forget that in the ISU, Junior is defined by AGE. In the USFS, Junior is defined by SKILL LEVEL. US Senior skaters have reached and gone beyond the skill level for Juniors, but they still meet the ISU age definition. Rachael is 15, and Mirai and Caroline are 14. By ISU standards (at least 13 but under 19 on July 1, 2007 for Singles and Ladies in Pairs and Dance, and under 21 for Men in Pairs and Dance), they are all on the young side. Tommy Steenberg was 19 in November, Bianca Butler was 19 in September, Joe Jacobsen turns 21 tomorrow, Emily Samuelson is 17, and Evan Bates turns 19 in two weeks. BTW, all of these skaters except Zhang competed in the JGP this season.

Most federations send their best age-eligible skaters, not necessarily their Junior champions.

Canada almost never sends their Junior champion to Jr Worlds. This year, they are sending Myriane Samson, who turned 19 in September.

In Russia most members of Junior worlds team competed both in Senior and Junior Nats, but they were selected according to Junior Nats results.

In the back of my mind, I knew it was legal but could not recall what it was. Thanks Chuckm for the reminder that the USFS treats Juniors by Skill Level and the ISU treats Juniors by age.

What about Novice? I would like to see Maria Secunde skating in this championship as well as Carman/Kierine. Very talented skaters.

btw, I think NNN and Ann Patrice were from years gone by, Yes?

Marissa Secundy is going to the International Challenge Cup (March 5-9) and she, Daniel O'Shea and Carman/Knierim will likely be skating in the JGP next season. The USFS would not take such an unusual precedent as sending Novices with zero international experience to an ISU Championship, especially when the Ladies Junior Champion (Alexe Gilles) was bypassed.

Marissa Secundy is going to the International Challenge Cup (March 5-9) and she, Daniel O'Shea and Carman/Knierim will likely be skating in the JGP next season. The USFS would not take such an unusual precedent as sending Novices with zero international experience to an ISU Championship, especially when the Ladies Junior Champion (Alexe Gilles) was bypassed.

I was most impressed with their Novice championships. I think Marissa, and Daniel and mostly Carman/Knierim. They looked so 'more than Novice'. I hope there is some youtubes from the International Challenge Cup. They are featured in the US Nats Gala on Icenetwork for those who haven't seen them.

I am quite sure that had Carman and Knierim been age eligible they would have had an excellent chance of being named to the actual Junior World Team based on their results this past year. The Novice Pairs silver medalists Chase and Speroff who are age eligible were added as replacement alternates to Jr. Worlds last week. I also think this past year the USFS had the Novice Pair team of Castelli and Schnapir out on the JGP. That shows that USFS is willing to think outside the box and send the strongest teams they possibly can. At least in the case of pairs and dance. In Secunde's case, in many other years she would have been an excellent candidate for Junior Worlds in my opinion, unfortunately she is up against incredible depth at both the Junior and Senior levels.

You're going out on a sprig here. Marissa will likely get some novice assignments and maybe a JGP assignment after several of the US junior ladies skaters get one. Amanda Dobbs, who was 5th in the junior division, totally outskated Marissa and Amanda is the younger of the two. Perhaps if the US could send a dozen ladies to Junior Worlds or there was a Novice Worlds ...

I agree. I thought Amanda was very special in Juniors. She was not in Novice from which I was suggesting. Secundy was. I'm sure they will battle it out next season. btw, Secundy is in the The Hague's International. Is Amanda?

Skate Canada also has Joanna Lenko/Mitchell Islam, who were supposed to skate senior at the 2008 nationals but withdrew, slated as their second entry in dance. The ISU entry list doesn't have their names on it...Karen Routhier/Eric Saucke-Lacelle are in their place. I'll assume that they had to withdraw. Does anyone know anything about this?
