2022-23 Grand Prix assignments

Does Kate Wang have a GP event this season? I'd rather see a younger more promising skater get to compete on the GP then someone like Starr Andrews who has never improved from her junior days of competing but always seems to get GP spots.

Wouldn't Watanabe go at the bottom?

ISU GP announcement says "Skaters/Couples, who place first in any of the ISU Challenger Series events for 2022/23 and can prove to have skated the minimum Technical score as mentioned in paragraph 2.3, will be added to the alternate list, bottom ranked according to their scores."

Yes, she should be at the bottom. That's what bottom ranked is saying.

But it also says "according to their scores".

I was interested if there could be more than one meaning behind these sentences and put it in deepl. Translated in another language and translated back.
Result:
(...) shall be included in the alternate list and ranked down according to their score

"ranked down" sounds different, more like "check the list for the correct placement, looking at the points".

Yes, but more than one skater could win a Challenger and be added to the replacement list. And they would have to be put in order. So the according to their scores part makes sense for that.

That as well of course. But why only rank the CS-winners amongst them and not rank the complete list?

I do not have an official answer for this but to me, it makes a lot of sense to add on the challenger winners at the bottom as "late qualifiers" for the GP series... Other skaters earned their ranking throughout the entire previous season so I believe it would be rather unfair that winners from the following year would dislodge them from the list. In some ways, the rule, allows an opportunity for skaters who either were not competing seniors the previous year, or had an off-season or were injured, to get some opportunities, IF there are opportunities to be had.

But didn't we "learn" from the Egadze case that any skater on that list can be picked, not necessarily going down form the top?
Why not show big scores first, no matter when they were achieved?

I don't think we learned anything from Rostelecom picking Egadze other than usual business of a GP picking someone from another country training in their own country. In other words, if the scores are meaningless, does it really matter who gets on top or bottom?

I'd say the scores are not meaningless as GPs will want to have "best of the best" perhaps.
But the time will not mean that much, so just ranking after numbers like in every other list would be the obvious thing to do. ISU in known for not always choosing those of course.
Or, whatever, just list them alphabetically

i think it's fine the way it is... the scores from the substitute list from the previous year allows some GP hosts to select them according to score... and adding names from those winning a challenger early in the season at the bottom, allows some hosts to look at those "hot skaters" as well...

I always have issues with score comparison, records and what not... do not forget that there are changes in BV and elements from season to season... comparing a score from competition to competition is already iffy within a season... but it's actually meaningless from season to season.

So - that said, focus should be even more on the newer scores, so who had a good result now has the momentum and is more likely to be comparable to others in the current season. Put them on top

and we have gone full circle... the reason they are at the bottom is probably because other skaters earn their ranking in the previous season.
