Wow, amazing first outing with Mea Shomenta. There is a lot to love about this program. His speed, edges, and flow are the best! Love the way he throws his whole body into the performance. The contrast in Air and Shomenta is a great showcase for his versatility. Jumps weren't perfect, but perfect enough for a first outing. You can practice jumps, but you can't practice charisma -- and he oozes charisma. Kenji definitely choreographed more transitions into this program. I love the gorgeous transition into the 3A-2A where the jump seems to come out of nowhere...BTW, loved the sea of Sho towels waving after he skated. And lots of people had the new orange one! :points:

Wonder what's up next. He has to be in Canada by probably October 25 or 26, so I wonder if he'll stay in Japan or go back to Switzerland...Hooray, now I feel like the season has really started! :cheer: :hap10:

Jumps weren't perfect, but they were good, considering this is tre first real competition of the season. His charisma is really a thing, nobody skates like him!
I also LOVE the transitions in the first half of the program, usually there aren't so many.

I think Shoma should have had higher PCS scores. Especially when you compare it to those who have amazing jumps but empty choreography. Shoma's feel for the ice is innate.
I think it's not so much his score was too low but that others were grossly overscored. Got to leave a little room for growth over the season. This was an amazing debut of the program. It was even more beautiful than in the ice shows this summer. I can't wait to see Shoma skate again this season

Shoma's Free Program from Japan Open

I found the movements of the arms at the very beginning of the program more fluently than had been seen so far and, thus, less stylized. Don't know which version I like more.

Ok, so I HAVE to comment on the pants. :points: I have always been quite the aficionada of velvet pants, but I really love these black pants and how they have sort of a sheen to them. They look really nice and show off his a$$ets rather well. Sorry! :slink:

This was in Loena Hendrykx Instagram story. I thought it was kind of cool because it shows how many Sho towels there are! The new orange ones really stand out! I have a red one that I wish I had been able to wave more often! Looks they had a good size crowd!

Looks like their faces will hurt tomorrow from smiling so much! I have a feeling they may be seeing each other several more times this year! I would have loved to have heard their conversation! After all, Sho's English IS improving!

Those pants have been my favorites since last season. Glad he brought them back. They fit him well. They don't bag out at the knees and make him look shorter and he looks great in them with every top. I think the top is my new favorite, too. I've retired the prince shirt with the crystals and t-neck as a favorite. It's in the hall of fame now where it only comes out when he needs to make a scene.

I like the FS music much more than the SP (song is not a favorite) but Shoma's skating is without question the best ever in it.

The FS: 1st half was deliberate and moved on the beat which for the music was eloquent and memorable. It wasn't until the 2nd half that the program and my interest really took notice. Wow. It was like two different Shoma's. His choreographer did such a great piece of work here and with transitions added for interest and less stress on the landings of his jumps, no one can beat him.

It makes me happy to see Shoma doing so well right off the bat. Great music, great choreography, fantastic skating and he's happy.

You just can't help but like Ilia. He needs refining but he has something special-outgoing and young and what a talent. It's going to be a good year now that the competition is on! Get better Yuma. We want to see the fireworks this year.

Japan Open is an official competition? I thought it was a fun competition to show off the new programs.

QUIck question about his skate at the Japan open today, was he off the music at the end? Or is the program supposed to end th to way? Overall the program was a good start, but I am looking to forward to a seeing the much improved version near the end of the season.

His ending was after the music ended, yes. It's because he had to combo his last jump (it was supposed to be a single 4T for his last jumping pass), which impacts the timing of him entering the step sequence and ultimately the final spins. The original ending pose was supposed to be together with the music, but I think because Shoma was never off beat the whole way and didn't rush it only became noticeable that he was actually behind the music at the ending.

The correct ending timing is supposed to be like this, when he did it in ice shows:

Also the skate at Japan Open, for those who has not watched:

I'm not quite sure what "official" means. The ISU event page defines Japan Open as "an annual invitational senior international figure skating team competition" where participants skate a free program only and the results of the team members are added together. I can't remember if the individual scores count as season's or personal bests. I think of it as a fun competition that serves as a kickoff to the season.

I was curious how the results have been over the years and saw that in the 14 times the event has been held as an international event, the winners have been Team Europe--4 times, Team Japan--9 times, Team North America--1 time. Retired skaters are also sometimes invited to participate.

It's a good first skate for Shoma, at Japan Open. I don't want Shoma to peak too early but I think it's a very respectable showing, his jumps look solid with room for improvement, not quite concerning. The spins look solid too, which is great especially with the new rules. In the second half he was behind the music but never out of beat, which I always love from him. And the skating is just :love2: love how contrasting the two parts are in the Aria, with the heavenly first part and the furious (tormented) second half.

I know it's just Japan Open, but I think it was important for Shoma to skate at least like this: calm, measured, with no major errors or falls. Especially with the Japan media immediately panicking over Ilia's quads, and Yuma not being there means Shoma is the only one who faces most of the questions about Ilia and how it impacts his preparation for this season (Kao is there too but the context is different). I thought Shoma aced this competition both off-ice and on-ice, he showed off the difference of quality in his skating and performance, and also is very complimentary of Ilia's skills, performance and potential. He really has grown into such an amazing man and skater.

(Also something that was on my mind... I'm glad his first skate in Japan this season went well, especially after the dating announcement. And seeing him supported well in the arena also warms my heart- the Instagram story from Loena really showed how many Shoma fans were there!!! And the tickets for JO are quite expensive too. I know it's unfair but after he made it official with Marin, any mishaps from his side will affect her too. I'm glad he stayed focused and looked like he just continued where he left last season).

I wondered why I read people saying "Shoma wore a yellow tie." Yellow tie?! For what? Here it is -- the annual tv session they do prior to the start of the GP season. Honestly, he gets the best dressed award both on and off the ice.

Wondering if Demi-san needs an assistant. Asking for a friend. :slink:

With "official competition" I meant a real competition, with lights on, judges, scoring etc... I don't know if the scores here can count as personal best either...
Anyway, these black pants show all that's meant to be shown, lines and all :dbana:
Even if he was a little late at the end of the program, his musicality made up for it.

Ps: I want a Shoma's towel too !!

Shoma performed Gravity at Carnival on Ice! I think this is a new black costume? I know Arriba will approve of these pants. 😆

No combination jumps, but that could be to save energy. Still, a very nice first outing for this program. Is it just me or did the ending get more intense than in the ice shows? 😳
