Deniss Vasiljevs

I love the SP, it's lightness and easyness Deniss was performing it. "Relaxed jazzy pop music" (it's an audiodescription from the Sting's song videoclip) really suits him (and "dramatic solo drumming" reminds a bit last year's SP 😊). Music editing is perfect. And the line "It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile/Be yourself no matter what they say" sounds like Deniss credo.
Sure jumps must be improved and StSq can be leveled up. But it's so promising Deniss included a quad to his SP for the first time. Believe we watch him slaying in the SP this season.

I love both of Deniss' new programs. Stephane's choreographer did Deniss' SP and it's really a cool program for him. If he had done that quad, he would have placed higher but the free skate music suits him and that program will just get better and better. He's just so beautiful to watch.

I loved these new programs, too. I agree - he is so beautiful to watch and he really feels the music. I was happy to see him come back to win bronze after the short program issues.

What was the thinking behind putting the quad in the short program this season?

I think he has proven himself that he’s able to do it. So I would like him to feel free to work on it and to do it in competition in the short and the free. It takes bravery to take that risk. For the long term, that’s what he needs and what he wants. He’s quite a strong skater in the sense that he’s physically very strong. But he’s also technique-wise, very strong. The way he manages his edges and the way he jumps is the textbook technique. So I think, even though it takes him longer, the foundation is pretty solid. I really think that in skating, the way you do things is super important. So I really enjoy working with him because he commits to that excellence. And for the long term, this is very useful.

It is so comforting to see a coach speaking so sensibly, where others are all on short term accumulation of quads without due consideration of technical foundations. I would say, with Deniss, it sees.

I think Stephane does a lot for his skaters to have the best technical foundations possible. I really appreciate he invites a bunch of technical coaches to Champery, including Ghislain Briand who basically divides his coaching time between Champery and Osaka recently.

By the way, when I watched Deniss's EX last season, I was laughing to myself that after all the voices that Stephane himself couldn't jump 3A and couldn't teach it, the only Deniss' jump in this EX was 3A, beautifully performed 😄
