Sad that Daleman, Schumaker and Fabri/Ayer won't be there, but I'm still ridiculously excited for nationals next week. Ice dance and pairs are going to be barnburners (which I would not have expected at the beginning of the season, especially in pairs). I feel like men's is a complete toss-up. And I'm really hoping to see some talent coming up under Madeline, who I have a feeling is going to be fierce here.

damn it... i hadn't noticed that Fabbri Ayer won't be there... :( too sad about Matte-Ferland and Gabby ... now, even sadder.

Men - Keegan (last year before retirement) plus Romsky (rooting for him the most) should get the two spots. I have a strange feeling Stephen Gogolev is going to surprise though. I want Stephen to do well, because with Keegan gone next year, it will be him and Romsky leading the way for Canadian Men. Also, FYI, the standard Canada has set for athletes being sent to International competitions is a score of 220. Neumann was close at the challenger event with a score of 217. He beat Chiu at this event. With Conrad and Corey not skating well this season, if Neumann finishes in the top 5 with a score over 220, he has a good chance to be on the Canadian Team, for next year.

Ladies - Maddie is our only lady with minimums for Worlds. She skated 180+ at her two GP events and 180+ at Golden Spin. She is the fave. Kaiya (170+) and Justine (165+) were also excellent at the Challenger event in Austria. But, they finished in 6th and 4th at the Challenger event, after placing 1st and 2nd, after the SP. Hoping Kaiya will pull a Kaori and regroup at Nationals. She is my fave. The three women who won medals at the Challenger event, all skated the best skates of their lives so far. So, it will be interesting to see which one was a fluke performance. Fiona Bombardier has the genes. Canada requires the ladies to score over 165, to be sent to International events. The top three at Challenger, all scored over this mark. If any of these three, score over that mark again at Nationals, ahead of either Kaiya or Justine, I can see Canada sending them to 4CC. I think Sara Maude is the only with a qualifying score though, so the other two, will have to be sent to an event prior. Not sure what events are left prior to 4CC.

Pairs - This is the event I’m most looking forward to. I’m going to be paying attention to 5th and 6th place. I’m hoping Nadeau scores over 160, to be sent internationally. That is the score required.

Well... Gabby has her mins too. you never know... March is far. I don't wish anything bad to Madeline but it's not automatic.

Kaiya, and Justine, even Fiona and Sara-Maude could get theirs at 4CC... because they do have their 4CC minimums.

When it comes to ISU championships, Skate Canada will send the number of athletes they can send... The benchmark scores are needed for athletes to be sent to challengers (or I guess our home GP).

National team has been changing its format since covid... Before covid, it was 5 athletes per discipline. Then it became only the podium finishers... this year, it looked like it was all athletes invited to GPs, hence the very variable number per discipline.

As a matter of fact, the National team = better funding... so it makes sense they would fund the athletes invited to GPs.

We will see what they do next year... but I am not going to be surprised either way... 9 dance teams was refreshing to say the least.
 
According to Alicia and Paul's instagram, Paul dislocated his shoulder before Sheffield.... it better not be on that crazy tumbling pass he was doing... :( His surgery was scheduled for December 28... hope it went well... Shoulders (I broke both of mine, separated times) are tricky to heal... Ask Han Yan... :( sigh...

The only good news is that it's just the start of the new Olympic cycle, and if you have to have an injury and surgery, now's the time to do it and be able to give it the time to properly heal. And it's not like they were going to be fighting to get a spot at worlds or 4CC this season, what with how crowded it is at the top of the dance field in Canada.

Sad to read this. They had great momentum and looked good to medal at Worlds and maybe stand atop the podium. I hope they can get up to speed and regain their form. I'm keeping my digits crossed.
 
Oh no! They were doing so well this season. I really hope we will still get to see them at Worlds (I presume even if all goes well 4CC is too soon?)

Oh no!!!! How long until worlds? I hope she has a speedy recovery.
 
What are the chances of F/BS and LaLa getting three spots for Montreal if it comes to that?

well... Piper and Paul, if they were to be out, it moves up everyone below them by one spot... including both Canadian teams.

If we look at the GP standings, LALA were actually 10 points above the 3rd American team in the total of two events, so about 5 points for one competition. The Finns and the Lithuanians are the other contenders I would say, but Lopareva Brissaud are also close.

Other American and Canadian teams are out.
So, if Nik and Lolo retained the GPF 5th (without Piper and Paul, as they were indeed 6th at GPF) spot, and without the fall, they were going to be higher.. but just in case...
LALA need to make sure they do not get passed by more than 2 teams from those mentioned above.

If Nik and Lolo do better, then LALA have even more breathing room.

If we look at "before the fall" Nik and Lolo, without Piper and Paul, could have finished 3rd.... meaning that LALA would only need to finish 10th or above.

It is possible. What is dangerous is if one of the lower ranked teams leaped ahead of both Canadian teams.

If she just gets laparoscopic surgery, from what I understand, they will easily be at worlds, likely at 100%. This is what I'm assuming at this stage. Four Continents might be a stretch, and I don't think they should come back unless they are in peak condition — it would be the excuse the Chock/Bates need to pass them.

But I am nevertheless totally shattered not to be able to see them win another Canadian title. I love their material this year and have looked forward to seeing it at every competition. They just can't catch a break...
 
I’m not clear on when exactly Piper had this surgery, but she posted a video of herself at the rink yesterday while wearing skates, so conceivably it was a while ago and they just aren’t ready for the national championships.
 
Hopefully she is not pushing herself to come back too soon and causes more problems. I mean I can understand her wanting to get ready for worlds with the season they have had but if she is not ready to skate yet it may not be for the best in the long run.

The window is pretty narrow : from GPF to when the news came out. Only a few weeks. Being at the rink doesn't mean being able to twizzle, spin and lift. I hope she is listening carefully to her body and takes time to recover fully.

I couldn't tell from the press release either, when the surgery was, only that it had already happened. If she's already back on the ice, that's great news. I imagine they'll have to hold back on lifts for a while, but there are lots of other things they can work on like making sure all the edges and turns are deep and true.

Fortunately they're in a really good place this season. Their material was a hit out of the gate, so they didn't have to go back to the drawing board and rework parts of it, they could just focus on polish.
