2023 U.S. Nationals Sr. Men's Free Skate

Well, I just took a moment to read the selection criteria and USFed managed to put themselves in yet another pickle, which is why it’s taking so long to name the Worlds team.

Better that people figure out how they can view the ISU site. This is why I highly recommend a vpn, it is the key to ISU content that has a much longer lifespan.

Bottom line: International competitions are a big part of the criteria. Brown didn’t compete internationally; therefore, he doesn’t meet most of the criteria. He can be considered because of his Nationals results from this and last year, but other skaters in the top 5 meet the criteria more than he does because they have international scores. If the Fed goes by their criteria as strictly as JFed went by theirs, then the team should be Ilia, Naumov, and Pulkinen, which is obviously not the most strategic choice. After Ilia, Pulkinen meets most of the selection criteria, although he did poorly at Nationals.

Sorry that I was so blunt it did not mean to go off on you like that. I am just saying the Raf trying to coach Ilia at arms length is not working and it not a long term solution for Ilia's issues. I know why Raf is trying to avoid doing what needs to be done. Because the run into Bejing with Nathan nearly killed him. He wants to try not do that again. I think though he needs to more than what is doing now. I do not think that he needs to be every competition Ilia is in for the next 3-7 years, but the the major ones like GPF, Nationals, 4CC's, worlds, and the Olympics he needs to be there and coach him and be his main coach. His parents are wonderful people an can do some of daily coaching duties and go with him to events like his main GP events but Raf really needs to take over the main coaching duties and take over plan what they need do for Ilia because what is happening now is not working. Raf knows what do and he just needs to do it. Ilia could one of the Greatest Figure Skaters of all time he just needs to right guidance to get there.

If the ISU has it, it really is futile to look elsewhere. Good way to waste a day looking skaters up across multiple platforms and countries to find maybe 4 videos so I stopped doing it once the entire feed became available. Easier to link to the event and give the skate order. Some other people have asked me to time stamp them all. That is an insane amount of work that would take way too long. If someone wants it time stamped then please do it and send me the stamps to post. It took me 10 YEARS to compile my lists and the entire pandemic to post them. I draw my lines there.
 
I'm seeing stuff on Twitter that the World and 4CC teams have just been announced, but conflicting information about who.
 
And it looks like Kapeikis, Naumov, and Ma for Four Continents, according to Jackie Wong and IFS Magazine.

Camden Pulkinen is 1st alternate for Worlds, with Naumov 2nd alternate and Ma 3rd alternate.
The alternates for 4CC are 1st Hiwatashi, 2nd Paniot, and 3rd Mindra.

Overall this is a pretty good selection considering all the difficult choices and still meets the criteria that prioritized Nationals first but gave a lot of consideration to international, including Pulkinen's strong result at the last Worlds.

Wait, why no 4CC for Ilia? He should go to it to get one more competition before Worlds.

USFed got it right this time, but I disagree that it met selection criteria. But I’m glad for that. If selection criteria results in not sending the best team, them something is wrong. USFed could have went with Ilia-Brown-Pulkinen/Naumov, but if they name Brown then Torgashev has to be named, as well. They understood this. They also understand that you don’t name someone who placed below top 5 at Nationals to the World team. Jfed, take notes!

The criteria is vague enough. It lists things to be considered in priority order. It includes lots of different international contests in the priority but doesn't say someone has to have international, that it would count as a 0 for that priority. To me it's like an N/A.

Didn't the USFed ask Brown to come to Nationals in the hope to get a spot for worlds and with Ilia, secure the 3 spots for men at 2024 worlds? I read this on this board... If that's true, it would be quite counterproductive to not send him based on... the criteria.. :)

They need to do this cancel the ice show that they planning on doing, if the main reason they are doing is money to fund Ilia training then USFS should give them the money that they were going earn doing that, and go to 4CC:s with Raf doing the main coaching and having dad for moral support and see if they works much better because what is happening now is not helping him at this point. He needs to ready for world's it is first major step to the Olympics in 2026. I love his skating he has a gift and he needs to develop to it's full potential and it has to start now. Nationals needs to be the wake up call to make some changes in how Ilia is managed. Raf had done this before with Nathan and he knows what to do with Ilia he just needs to do it.

USFS has an envelope/tier system where they hand out money. I would like them all to get more money. But I don’t think Ilia should get whatever money he’s getting from the ice show to go to 4CCs just because he’s the current hot skater. That would not be fair to the other athletes.
Raf has long said he was retiring and I’m not sure why he decided he was going to take on a relatively young skater who hopefully could be around for a decade or more.

Sounds like a rumor that should be taken with a grain of salt. Especially if it’s something you read on this forum. In any case, it was still crystal clear that US needed to send a strong wingman because no one else is cutting it. The international results of the American men not named Ilia have been mediocre and Ilia can’t keep the three spots by himself.
