Pairs long.

I definitely think that S/S were overmarked. I can't believe how high their scores were with the performance they gave. They are great skaters and lovely to watch, but on the night for me, it didn't deserve gold.

Who did, then? Will you answer - none of the couples?? But someone must win. And we cannot blame S/S that they won but they should not have because no one should. This is not the rule. The rule is to establish who is a world champion, and S/S, in the whole festival of mistakes, turned out to be best (I agree, though, that score was too high. It should have been a close marigin between S/S Z/Z D/D and P/T).

I am no expert on Pairs skating, especially with the new rules. Singles skating is complicated enough for me lol. I thought that S&S were championship material the first time I ever saw them, but for me, last night, they were not the best to watch. Perhaps I was just too tired by the time they skated, but the Pairs I most enjoyed watching yesterday, were the Zhangs and Pang & Tong. The Zhangs pleasantly surprised me; they have been improving all along. He is very strong and she is very petite, so things like the triple twist go really well. They were so athletic! P&T are like the Berezhnaya & Sikharulidze of China; they have an aesthetic quality on the ice that I love. I am happy for Aliona and Robin, however. All in all, a high quality Pairs competition.

From watching Pair after Pair, year after year, I have come to the conclusion that the single hardest thing for most Pairs is side-by-side jumping. Even with Pairs that are quite successful with the throw jumps, doing the kind of jumps that singles do is often their Waterloo. In Robin's case, I think his chest expanse, like Artur Dmitriev's, is large enough to make the side-by-side jumping extra hard for him.

Kurt Browning said something interesting during the CBC Main Broadcast tonight. He said that Aliona and Robin's music is dangerous music in skating because it's soft music w/no highs or lows in it. The reason he said it's dangerous is because unless you're perfect, the program really doesn't work that well at grabbing the audience's attention. I disagree it's boring, but it is rather one toned and due to that....I've seen it before w/other "quiet music" programs and he's right. If you aren't perfect or awfully close to it, it does afftect the feel of the program.

I still think the right couple won, it's just a shame they couldn't skate up to what they're capable of doing and *feel* they deserved it more than it's looking they do.

I can see where Kurt is coming from. I realise that for some people this programme speaks only if it is flawless. To some it does not speak at all. But for me, it spoke even with those mistakes. Actually, it is just a perfect harmony to me.. They could skate on and on to this music and it would just simply made me happy. They created with this music a perfect fairy-tale world. For me, these 4 minutes yesterday were nothing but calmness and harmony.. I felt truly happy and I guess this is what the figure skating is all about. I felt ALMOST like this only once more yesterday - when D/D skated and once EXACTLY like this when Sarah Meier did her SP. Someone wrote that she was the ray of sunshine, and indeed she was...

Kudos to Hao Zhang. He suffered badly from the furuncle on his leg where he received a surgery just several days previous to Worlds, and he said it hurt even when he simply tried to walk so he missed practice for weeks. To make things worse, he got tympanitis, the middle-ear inflammation. Despite of all these things, he did everything right in the competition. Plus, he has this incredibly lovely personality that always brings a smile to your face, like the little peck on the cheek he gave Davison during the medal ceremony. I still have faith in Zhangs, and I wish them good luck next year. Hopefully, they could have a better choreographed program.

Also, just a little tip for the Russian couple K/S: She really shouldn't have worn this much make-up; and why Mukhortova was acting so cold to her partner when he took a break to treat the arm injury, I will never know...

As for K/S - what happened to Tamara Moskvina's pairs?? Since Arhtur Dimitriev left, she has been struggling with so-so skaters...
B&S and I&Z were so-so skaters that she struggled with? Unless you meant Dmitriev's work as a coach in Moskvina's group ?
I liked K&S's SP, but their LP is horrible, and so much of the refinement they have in their SP goes out the window, the music and orchestration were terrible, and all of the inventive looks typically found in Moskvina's programs were just not there .

Congratulations to the new pais World Champions from Germany-Ukraine!!! Savchenko is so pretty!!! Sure it wasn't a performance for the ages but they were the best on the night. Dube Davison will be a team to watch come 2010 and I'm sure the Russian Federation will do everything they can to help and improve Smirnov's team. Will the Zhang ever win a Gold? Too bad they are great technically but absolutely no artistry and no cohesion between them. It wasn'a great night of skating but I agree with the podium. Celebrate now Alyona !

Yes I agree, the choreography for both the Zhangs and K/S partly did them in. Come to think of it this pairs competition was kinda wacky in general with all of these things. I'm so excited fort he ladies later on, it's gonna be great!

P.S. is it strange that they're having ht eladies FS on Thursday as opposed to Saturday? Or has it been done that way in the past but just broadcast on Saturday?

Q&a

Q: Chinese is too difficult to learn for us. Can we play the CD instead of singing it?
A: Don't worry. No need to learn chinese. You know we won't put you into such difficult position.

Chineese lost cuz they had no chemistry no cohesion they were like two robots out there no expressions at all. Stop making excuses it's getting boring your teams lost cuz they didn't deserve it. The German-Ukrainian team won not because they were spectacular but simply because all around they were the "best" team on the night. Congratulations to them.

I'm so over the moon for D/D I couldn't care less about controversy for silver/gold. For me D/D had the best LP of the night and their placement is nothing but fair! I'm absolutely thrilled for them.

At the same time I'm sad for K/S. Kawaguchi has got to be the cutest pair skater ever. When she smiles she is adorable.

I agree. Bryce and Jessica had the skate of the night! They looked so fresh and youthful and expressive. It was one of those magical moments. In fact, Tracy and Kurt never said a word throughout their whole performance. They waited until the last note of music was playing. As Kurt said "It was one of those magical moments" and "they captured the audience."

I did not even pay attention to who won the silver or the gold. Their performances paled after that lovely skate. I thought the music S&S skated to was draggy and boring.

Hurrah for D&D - they deserve it!!

:bow::bow:

What controversy??????? The German-Ukrainian team got Gold because they were the best simple. The judges who know far more than all of us together gave it to them so they deserve it. Was it a great performance no but it was still the best that night. The Chinese team skated like robots with 0 expression. DD could challenge SS soon.

so, i'm only now watching on ESPN and haven't even read the threads yet...but I just want to say two things. I really really like John and Rena's programs this year and am so glad they competed; sorry not as well as they would have liked, but I really enjoyed watching them.

I really love Pang/Tong's LP - i still hate the lack of toe point or full stretch, but this program is really, really, IMO, lovely. (if only they could spin???).

Bad skating = high scores.

Fall down = high scores

Lifeless presentation = high scores.

I do not understand this ISU scoring system at all. :ohwell:

Got a chance to re-watch, and while I thought the top 2 performances were both disappointing, I would have been left with an even worse feeling if the Zhangs had won with that incredibly sub-par skate. At least the Germans had a cohesive program, with some interesting moves, and they did perform it. The Zhangs seemed to discard any advances they had shown in artistry in the SP (which I was happy to see) and skated one of the more lacklustre podium performances I've seen in recent times. Everything between the tricks needs a huge amount of work, and they also had a few technical glitches. They perform tricks well, they are not particularly good skaters and I really hope they address that sometime soon — it's been several years now without much notable progress. Their skating has no feeling, and they have zero connection on the ice with each other or the audience.

Kawaguchi/ Smirnov are still a bit rough around the edges, and don't seem entirely in synch at times. Still, could become a powerhouse. Hope they choose something other than Love Story next season.

D/D still the skate of the event. I hope this gives them confidence.

Ive been a defender of the COP for a long time now but I just watched the LP and damn that was some bad overscoring. Havent checked the protocols yet but did SS actually received +GOES for any of their elements as I think I've read in this thread?? that is insane. The wacky PC score continues with Pang&Tong being the new victim. ANd I dont think anyone has ever wrote this phrase on this board before but ::" The Zhangs were kinda robbed!!!" Overall they were the best IMO and the canadians should have won the LP. Bronze is fair for them though, their content is still not as strong.

I'm glad Kawaguchi/Smirnov did very well. Russian champion, European Bronze medalist and 4th at World championships is a great season. They have improved a lot, and I have no doubt they will come to next season improved. (I didn't have much love for Love Story LP either. Hopefully next season's programs will be better.)

Scores were little weird, but I agree with results. I think the right pair won although I don't understand why Pang and Tong are being scored low.

I hope I'm not repeating anything that has already been asked but I was watching the ESPN coverage of the pairs free skate and was wondering, is Jessica Dube missing a finger? I can't remember which hand I was looking at though.

I loved her and Bryce's free skate even more viewing it the second time. I can't wait to see more of them in the future.

I LOVED watching Dube/Davison, Savchenko/Szolkowy, Kawaguchi/Smirnov, Pang/Tong, Mukhortova/Trankov, and Duhamel/Buntin. These teams make me SO EXCITED for pairs skating. Add Shen/Zhao and McLaughlin/Brubaker into the mix and let the magic begin! The road to Vancouver appears to be thrilling for sure!!

AFAIK she has 10 digits

You weren't seeing things and I've been wondering about it too. It looked like she's missing half of a finger. At first I thought it was a bad angle of the camera in the K&C, but when I saw it again, it does look like there's a portion of a finger missing on her one hand.
