2026 Olympics Team Event speculation

The British skaters were also openly thrilled to be skating in the Team even, and they have no chance of qualifying to the free let alone getting a medal. I haven't watched all of yesterday's event yet (I am halfway through pairs), but the main skater looking down on the team event seemed to be Cizeron. France are not certain to qualify to the free, and would only have a slim chance of a medal if they did, and anything less than a gold medal always seems to be below him (and always has). I don't think we can take Cizeron's view as being representative of all skaters.
and he was handed a tough loss there. :)

This sets up two possible narratives for next week.

Scenario One: See, if C/B had not worn themselves out by skating both segments in the Team Event, they'd have been better in the individual event and would have won. Told you so! Too bad for them!

Scenario Two: Of course C/B won. The judges had already seen this free dance in the Team Event, they had a competitive opportunity to work out their nerves and refine some fine points after getting feedback. It's almost cheating because the others didn't get this chance.

It's a win for the C/B haters, because they can be either smug or outraged depending on the outcome, and yet still find a plausible way to be in the right in either case.

Today's schedule is quite weird. They started so very early yesterday - enough time to get RD and all SPs done. And because of the reduced field FD and all FP could be done today. Dance has to be decided de facto before men finish today ... or you have a second team sitting around and waiting who will be the chosen one. THAT would be a true dress rehearsal.

I think they started so early so the skaters could go to the opening ceremony?

Athletes everywhere in all sports, if they are smart and savvy, conserve their energy for the important events.

The Olympic team event is supposed to be an important event, and in terms of the record books, it's no different than an individual medal towards someone's legacy in medal counts.

Thankfully, USFSA decided not to throw away an Olympic Gold Medal. Ilia Malinin is skating the LP and the medal is now secured, unless he has the most uncharacteristic meltdown of his entire career (or if Amber Glenn has a meltdown).

What do you mean by "someone's legacy in medal counts"? Jeremy Abbott has won an Olympic medal based on one skate that was among the worst of his senior career. What more does winning that medal speak to his legacy?

Putting Amber in the long is very questionable, I could understand the short but she is inconsistent.

Honestly I would trust Isabeau more and Alyssa the most.

Ilia actually strikes me as the kind of skater who would be majorly mad after finishing second and be like I WANT to skate the LP and I'll show YOU. (sorry for all the caps). They might not have forced him into it.

Re Amber. She strikes me as more of a LP skater, so I have faith.

He is an Olympic medalist in the books. Regardless of how it happened.

The same as Ilia Malinin has great chances to become the first skater to ever win 4 Olympic Gold medals, by taking the team and individual in 2026 + 2030.

Then you're probably just biased against Amber for whatever reason. Her LP scores this season were overall better than Isabeau's.

No, Liu in SP and Glenn in FP was the correct choice. Glenn misses the 3A in SP and she would have been below Gutmann and Shin. Glenn has been very solid in the FP, consistently scoring 140-145ish and Levito usually scores mid to high 130s, which can be beaten by Gubanova if she’s on her game. Even if Glenn isn’t quite clean - a pop here or a UR there - I really don’t see her falling any lower than 2nd. She’ll have to revert to the Glenn of 2-3 years ago to lose to anyone besides Sakamoto in the team event.

BREAK
I finally watched Kagiyama’s SP (too chicken to watch live) and he was absolutely sublime. That was the best he’s ever performed. He even hyped up the crowd near the end!

Heh, I knew Ilia was going to skate the FP. Losing a team gold is one thing, but losing to Kagiyama by 10 points while everyone’s watching is another. It’s not the first time, but this is on Olympic ice. He has a cool head on his shoulders so he’s got this.

I doubt ilia . He may not skate to pace himself. Hopefully amber will skate decent.

I rewatch it 3 times thanks to video and nbc tv prime time.
Yuma overcome so was Stephen
That being said. I wouldn't have changed the standing. Yuma 1st ilia 2nd step gem 3rd

Amber isn't a huge gamble. She should be able to hold off Madi Schizas, Laura G and Gubanova. at worst she comes third.
USA's only real weakness is pairs. They have a five point lead. I doubt Ilia would lose twice but even if he did it woudl be just 1 below Japan.

I think Japan wins the tiebreaker though, no?
If Amber goes third, K/O go 5th as is expected in the field, and Shun places second , I mean

Malinin lost SP a couple of times before but he knew he would be able to make up for it in the free with his count of better or worse quads so all these losses were mostly meaningless to him and inconsequential. This is the first time when a loss is a loss as the point lost cannot be simply taken back, and it may have consequences depending on how the whole Day 3 plays out. I think it puts more pressure on all Team US competing today as I am pretty sure they did not expect what happened. Yuma's win OTOH is probably a huge boost in confidence and spirit for Team Japan.
