Grand Prix Assignments 2023/24 released

Why did you think Gubanova would be in Finland?
Saint Petersburg --> Espoo. Very close. Last year she competed twice in Finland.

Gubanova wasn't even seeded as she was outside the Top 12 at Worlds. But she is the European Champion so the bigger federations (France, Japan) perhaps wanted her?

I just checked and he actually is on the ISP! Thank goodness, I can still cling onto my faint hopes for him. 🥲
What is ISP? Whatever it is I get that it's good for Tomoki. So we'll see him at comps this season? That's great.

^^ Yes, @surimi, you are correct, in response to @snowflake's query:

Scroll down for blurb on what the ISP is, and links to the ISP lists for each discipline this coming season.

ETA:
It must be an error for Baram/ Tioutmentsev to be listed under pairs. They were eligible last season for juniors, and they won junior Worlds. But unless the age rules have changed, Daniel is now too old for juniors, and Sonia is too young for seniors (due to ISU's recent age eligibility changes, post the Russian doping scandal at 2022 Olympics). The same age-related situation holds for U.S. junior pairs champs, Ellie Korytek/ Timmy Chapman.

The pairs list looks skimpy, but there are a number of new teams and young up-and-coming teams who aren't quite eligible yet (due to waiting on releases, e.g., Danil Parkman, skating with Katie McBeath; and we're not sure whether Thierry Ferland & Gabbie Izzo will skate for the U.S. or Canada). There's Efimova/ Mitrofanov-- she has her release, but maybe the list was published before her release was a done deal; there's also Haley Scott/ Blake Eisenach, but neither have top level pairs experience, so they will compete domestically and vie to get assigned to some Challenger and Senior B events. A number of other less experienced teams are working hard to improve, including Hanns/ Neudecker; Fitzpatrick/ Bearinger; Digerness/ Sadusky, et al.

I’m very happy to see Xiangyi An on the list. So glad she moved up to Seniors this year and got into Skate America. If she places top three in the Chinese summer competition, one of the TBD spots is hers. She wowed me at Junior Worlds. I’m hoping she is in good shape and has relearned that triple lutz and able to score over 200 points this year.
How did she lose her lutz? Did you mean that she lost the correct edge, or she lost the whole jump?

Her 3Lz in her FS got -GOE last season because of a wild step out and I think she missed her intended combo during JWC, and at Gdansk she did a combo after the 3Lz but her hand went down on the lutz

Yay! My man Andreas got two spots! I wish for him to have a breakthrough this season.

Women:

Interesting that Wakaba got two while Rika only got one spot. None of them were guaranteed a spot but Rika is much higher on the SB list (25th) while Wakaba in only 108th(!!). Well, Rika will be on top of the Replacement List so I'm pretty sure she will get another one.

No Gubanova in Finland? Interesting...

I am wondering about Isabeau. Her technique is so strange and not sustainable so I fear she might drop this season. If so, I am sure Bradie who is a hard worker will be back on top. But my hopes will be on Lindsay. She is my favourite American skater and she deserves a breakthrough.
Hopefully Ziegler gets the host spot.

Looking at the SB list Top 24 for women there are 8 skaters in Skate America and NHK, 7 in China, 6 in France and Finland, and only 5 in Skate Canada.
Didn’t Wakaba use the returning skater rule or whatever it is?

I think she couldn't use that rule because JSF sent her to a Challenger last year, but I'm not super knowledgeable about how these exceptions work.

A bit surprised that Lucas Broussard is not staying on the JGP for another season where he'd be almost guaranteed to get 2 assignments and a good chance of making the JGPF again instead of just one Senior GP event. He might be pushing it a bit too much to fast.

I agree on that since I have a feeling that USFS don't have any options since Jason Brown decided to skip it although that they could've give that spot to the likes of Samuel Mindra for International exposure so that Lucas can focus JGPF, JWC and hopefully the Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2024 next year.

USFS didn't give any spots to Lucas.

I think it would help if the OP stated the rules at this point. So many people are confused about how this works.

Each GP host has 3 spots for their own skaters. They invite the others based on a few criteria.
Top twelve at worlds gets 2 spots etc etc.. (there are a few things to consider here).

In other words, each skater earns their own qualification. Then GP hosts have to select them based on that. Host spots do not need to meet the criteria.

Lucas got invited because his season's best score was high enough to earn a spot... and he was invited by another host.
Skate America invited Ilia, Maxim and Andrew.

So, if Lucas had decided to do JGP instead, another skater would have been invited among the eligible one... and Sam Mindra doesn't belong to that list.

I love Sam and was repping him long before y'all noticed him.:rofl::rofl::rofl: But GP ready he is not. Hopefully he can go to some Senior Bs.

I feel like it actually might be quite wise, giving him two seasons in seniors to build a bit more of that PCS reputation before the Olympic season, so by the time that rolls around he won't be viewed as fresh out of juniors.

No that rule is used for skaters that has previously officially retired. Wakaba never retired, she just had a very bad season last year with bad results and injury.

This is how a reasonable fan of the sport talks.

We all have our lists... favorites list, up-and-comer lists, I'm-ready-to-give-up-on-you lists. But we have to view things as objectively as we can.

Sam is on my "up and comer" list.
