Oh really? But technically Kazuki got on the podium last season so it was a “break-through” for him then. I have no doubt he’ll make the podium again.
Kazuki won a bronze last yr..and in 2021 and in 2018 at GP events..Adam was talking favorites for the win..

This is so frustrating 😫

If he hadn't slipped in the SP stsq; if he had had positive GOE in at least one of the quads; if he hadn't UR the 3A in the free; or, simply, had the judges been a tad less stingy on PCS, he would have been on the podium and his GPF dream would be still alive. But now... no chance.😢

Maybe this is for the best. He'll have a good month and half break after CoC to finally rest and recover before Nats. But I do wonder what happened - he had been doing so well so far this season, and he made clear he is physically in good shape, so the issue was clearly mental. I'm looking forward to see what he says about his experience at Skate Canada in the next issue of non-no.

A press report after the free: https://www.nikkansports.com/sports/news/202310290000734.html
Figure: Kazuki Tomono 4th "I put it all together, but I coulnd't see any further", 0.89 points short of the podium.
Kazuki Tomono (25, Uenoshiba Skating Club), 3rd in SP, finished 4th in FS with 163.49 points, 245.12 points total. He missed the podium by 0.89 points, "There was a noticeable point deduction in jumps. I think it was just a performance that I put together, and I couldn't see anything more than that" he accepted.
The first run was a quadruple-two-rotation toeloop, and the second quad toeloop was off. The following quad salchow was also under-rotated. There were no falls after that, but there were many jumps that landed awkwardly.

In SP of the previous day, he placed 3rd with mistakes. He had a "veteran's instinct", but he could only place 4th in FS this day.

"I am satisfied with my current ability today. Of course, I could have done a little more, but I have to improve in practice. I think I did what I could have done today."

Next, he will compete in the fourth round of the GP series, the China Cup (November, Chongqing). I hope I can concentrate on the competition, because a competition is a competition. I want to eat Chinese food after that so that I don't get a stomach ache," he said.

I gave a quick look at protocols before bed..I have thoughts..

I gave a quick look at protocols before bed..I have thoughts..
I know... The judges once again robbed him blind. This is me reading his protocol:

Looking back on his skates and his interviews, I feel that the main issue was he was overly cautious; he was too cautious on his approach to the jumps, which caused him to make mistakes, and he was too cautious overall - he tried to put everything together but didn't have enough 'oomph' to pull it all into a cohesive performance.

I can't help but think that the ice issue played a huge part in this. Kazuki has a strong sense of self-preservation when it comes to his body - that's why he hardly ever gets injured - and feeling unsafe/uncomfortable on the ice most likely played a number on him mentally. I hope he understands this and doesn't blame himself too much, sadly sometimes the ice doesn't agree with the skater *cries in Yuzuru Beijing 2022*

I think "Halston" is gorgeous..that said..the beauty of Kazuki's Free Skates has always been no matter the jumps..he sucks you in in the last min..W the other men..doing choreography..that is more dynamic..though not necessarily to my liking..(that going to the judges' table thing is old now w so many people doing it..)..I am not sure that this vehicle is the right one to suck one in..

No matter what happens the rest of this season, I hope Kazuki will still continue to compete. He can do it! I know he has it in him to get a gold medal at the Grand Prix and a shot at making the Olympic team in 2026 if that is what he still wants for himself. Yes, he didn’t medal at Skate Canada 2023, but he could at Cup of China 2023. He really should continue to compete after this season. If he doesn’t take the chance to go again for another few seasons, he could miss the opportunity of what could be.

He said a while ago..he would quit if he had 2 seasons of bad results..that has not happened..

Kazuki had one of the best and most enjoyable skates of the event, as far as I'm concerned. A few slips on the quads, but nothing that stands out, and one forgets them as the program flows by. I was struck by how smooth Kazuki's skating has become, and the lovely glide and speed he has. The FS is an introspective tune, and I think someone like Jason would be a perfect fit for it, but Kazuki has decided to explore this direction, and he definitely does it justice, and does a better job than the vast majority of skaters would do IMO. Hopefully he rebounds, and repeats his Nationals success an WC nomination! If anyone's capable of skating this perfectly in high stress events, it's Kazuki. I have faith in him :)

I enjoyed the gala tremendously. Kazuki and Daisuke Takahashi are probably the most universally musical Japanese men I've seen so far; they feel and express rhythm so well.
It's amazing how Kazuki manages to come up with new creative ideas each year. It was worth staying up late for, and Sota pushing his chair was the cherry on top ☺️

I just have to go home and practice.
I could have won the championship. I know I'm good at what I do."

--Looking back on the match

Tomono: No, of course I was frustrated. I was so frustrated that I had to do some exercise before going to bed. I think it was the most frustrating result, but I think it was just the result of what I had done, and I was worried about my toeloop, but as a result of that, all my mistakes were toeloops. I could improve on my under-rotation, or minus, but the big mistake was my toeloop. So, I just had to improve on it. But other than that, we are getting pretty well organized. The probability is good, but the toeloop is not. It's my weakest jump, and when it's not good, it's really different. If I can improve those parts, it will be my weapon in the second half of the season. I hope to bring out the best in it.

--did you look back at it in the video, etc.?

TOMONO: I was a little off-axis, as I expected. I didn't have a good feeling of landing on ice, not so much on toeloop. Other than that, I have improved so much. I feel I have grown up so much. But I feel that the toeloop is a big obstacle for me. If I can get through it, I am good at axel, and I think I can make it to the 4th toeloop. I have a little bit more good or bad sensation. Before this competition, I didn't have a good feeling in toeloop, but I guess it came out as it was. I think the athletes who have done that well have won medals, and I think I have not done that well enough.

-Is there any way to resolve the frustration?

Tomono: No, I just have to go home and practice. I am the type of person who gets relieved unexpectedly, so I think it is good that I don't have that. I hope I can practice without forgetting this. Up until now, I have been like, "Well, I've already done it, so let's see what happens next time and do our best. But this season, I want results, so even if I didn't win a medal, I would have felt like it was OK, but now I don't have any choice. I believe that I have the potential to win a medal and even win the championship. I recognize my ability, and because I know what I am capable of, I feel frustrated that I couldn't do it.

--could it be a factor that my friends are finishing one-two?

Tomono: No, I am very disappointed about that, too. I watched Yuma and Shoma at the World Championships, too. I have a lot of such patterns where I have to take one more step, I think. The power to make that decision, or the power to go through, but I still think I lack it. But I think that the two of them have prepared well. It is not that I am not good enough, but rather that I wish I could practice more and more with a higher awareness to win matches.

--Is the mental aspect a big part of it?

Tomono: No, it was practice, practice, practice. I was able to control the mental part of the game very well, and I was confident during the game, and I think I was the most relaxed in the game. I was able to pace myself well, so I wasn't upset in any way, and that was an area in which I had grown. I don't think it was the way I approached the match, but just the result of practice.

-I felt the taste of a veteran in this competition.

Tomono: The atmosphere. In FS, everyone seemed to have done their best, but I had a feeling that it was going to be a battle of 1, 2, mistakes or punctures. Before the Short, I had a sense of what I knew, so I had a certain flow of the competition, and it was strange that I hit it. So, if I was feeling difficulty, so were the people around me. It might be better if I didn't feel that way, but, for me, it's quite good when I can look at things calmly. I was able to see what was going on around me, and that was good.

-- so far, we've gone from a place where we're just winging it, like what are we going to do, and now we know what we're going to do.

Tomono: Technically, of course, there are many things that are lacking, but I am beginning to understand that what we are doing is not wrong. It shows in the scores. Even if I fail, I know the reason why I didn't get a good score. It's not so much that I'm not being evaluated, but more that it's my own fault. I am now able to get good scores, and they are reflected in my scores. I think that being able to show that in a competition is what makes you good at what you do, and I think that the ability to consistently produce that is what is needed to compete at the top in the future. Everyone makes mistakes, and even (Orix pitcher) Yoshinobu Yamamoto gets hit by a pitch.

--Are you the type of person who doesn't say, "I'm going for the championship"?

Tomono: I started saying that this year. Until now, I thought it would be a lie even if I said it. I am the type of person who needs to say things that would be a lie to motivate myself. Last year, I said I would definitely go to the World Championships, and I did it. When I thought about what I wanted to do this year, I thought, "I want a medal, but wanting a medal is probably not enough for the current men's team," so I knew I needed to win. I thought that I should be free to aim for the top. I want to be able to aim for the top and grow by suffering to the fullest extent. That's what I'm enjoying now.

--like for "that thing" to come.

Tomono: Yes, I have not won many championships in my life. Especially in international tournaments, I was only able to win in the B class. I want to have that power. That's the only thing I really lack. When I was a child, I had achieved a certain level of success, and I had been dispatched to other countries in a certain level, and I had grown in a certain way. Finally, I think I have really, really developed my ability. Last year, I realized that I am still a bit reserved, but I am working on getting rid of that. I am just aiming for that goal, and I hope I can do it.

--Well, then, you should aim for "that thing" in the Cup of China, too.

Tomono: Yes, the Cup of China is the one where we are aiming for "that thing. There are a lot of strong opponents, but I hope to do well enough to make a mess of them. I think this will be a good opportunity for me to practice with a refreshed mind, as I do every time. I don't want to repeat this, but it's fun to feel like I've been turned on. I will think about the practices before All-Japan and other things, and I hope I can catch up from there. I was a little worried that I hadn't seen any pain in the beginning of this season, so I'm going to try to switch things up.

25 ans interview is here! :cheer:

Kirara, thank you for that article. Hoping that things click for Kazuki! Eventhough he speaks of his SC performances in a well-balanced manner, I can't shake off the feeling he's really smarting because it's the second season in a row that this happened to him on GP circuit when he was so close to medaling. But third time's the charm! Kazuki deserves a GP victory so much, and I refuse to believe it won't change by next season. Trust yourself, Kazuki! 💪

Thanks @KiraraChin for the article. Unfortunately I missed the chance to read the whole article, but let me touch up the above. My suggestion:

Kazuki said his toeloop is very good and he can land it most of the time. So he wants to make it even stronger to eliminate his worries.

Watching 25 ans for the second time..w translate..

Just finished seeing the 25 ans video a second time with the English subtitles. First time I saw it in Japanese. I was surprised Kazuki doesn’t have a bone in his nose and was able to press it in. I thought everyone had a bone in their nose. That was interesting. I hope he isn’t worried about attractiveness because I think he is very handsome. I wonder if he would go to Finland in the summer or winter? It looks beautiful all season there. It seems like he is Sota’s natural alarm clock! 😆 Sota won’t have to be worried about being late with Kazuki around to wake him up. Tomono Kazuki, stay strong and believe in yourself because we fully believe in you 100% 💪🏻😊💖

Ohhhh thank you so much! That makes a lot more sense now

It was a disappointing result, but I will do my best for the next Cup of China!

Cross posting from Sota's thread. 25ans Interview with Sota & Kazuki:
1 of 2

K: Hello everyone, my name is Kazuki Tomono.
S: My name is Sota Yamamoto.
K: Today we would like to answer 25 questions referring to 25ans. Let's start.

Q1 What do you call each other?
K: Sota
S: Kazuki
K: Well, sometimes So-chan ( laughs).

Q2 If you were an animal, what would you be?
K: People say my face looks like an otter, but I think I have the personality of a dog.
S: I have a mind of my own, so I guess I am a cat in that way, and since I am a competitive figure skater, in the sense that I have a fighting spirit, I am a lion on rare occasions.

Q3 What is your morning routine?
K: During exhibitions and shows, my routine is that I wake up and go to Sota's room to wake him up (laughs).
S: I can't get up by myself. We usually end up in the room next to each other.
K: I just ring the doorbell "ding-dong" and say "So-chan, wake up" and that's how it is when we do a show together.

Q4 What do you do on your days off?
K: Sauna.
S: Sauna, I was going to say (laughs).

Q5 What do you like to do at home?
S: After I take a bath, before I go to bed, I watch Terrace House while eating ice cream, and I really like that time.
K: I'm like that too. I also really enjoy watching youtube after a bath, or just doing some stretching with some music on.

Q6 What is your favorite saying?
S: [looks at Kazuki] "But I dunno".
K: Oh, "but I dunno", I say it a lot, quite a lot. The only thing I say is "but I dunno". I also always say, "I'm tired," as a habit. But I dunno.

Q7 What kind of food have you been into lately?
K: Lately I'm into soba noodles and udon noodles.
S: I go to Starbucks a lot and they have delicious sandwiches and stone oven baked filone. They have filone and I hope everyone will try it.

Q8 What do you always bring to the ice rink?
K: Tissues.
S: Yes, skaters tend to have runny noses.
K: We tend to have runny noses. We spin pretty fast (laughs). It's hell in the winter.

Q9 What is your most recent story of "I messed up! (failure)?
S: At the time of choreographing the short program, I usually leave my skates at Chukyo because I practice there, so I got used to it and left my skates there, and when we were about to start the choreography, I realized I forgot my skates (laughs). My house is closer than Chukyo, so I went home to get my old skates, and I had to make him wait a little bit, but I got back just in time to resume the choreography.
K: That is really terrible.

Q10: What is the thing or things that you are "not really good at"?
K: I can only do one thing. I can't talk when I'm eating. People say I eat too fast, but I can't think about anything else when I have food in front of me. I can only do one thing at a time, so I don't try to think about the people around me.
S: Cicadas.
K: Cicadas. Huh? You used to catch a lot of cicadas a long time ago.
S: No, cicadas are the only thing I don't like.
K: Oh, you don't like cicadas?
S: I used to love bugs.
K: You used to go catching grasshoppers and stuff with everybody.
S: Yeah, I took the initiative and said, "Let's all go get grasshoppers and stuff together.
K: I don't remember if you were afraid of cicadas?
S: Cicadas are the only thing I can't handle. I can't do it even now, since I was a little kid.

Q11: Do you have any special skills?
K: When it comes to the sauna, I can tell the temperature of the water bath. I can also tell at a glance if a garment is my size.
S: Wow, that's great. I can pick up a soccer ball, put it between the heel and the arch of my feet, throw the ball over my head, like this, a little bit.
K: This one? You're good at that.
S: Well, I don't know the name of it (laughs). Please look it up (laughs).
[caption: It's a "heel lift"]
K: You know, the one where the ball goes over you and you just flick it over your head and it goes like this.
S: I'm kind of good at that.
K: When you get a ball, you show it off (laughs). I'm like, "There he goes. He's doing it. (laughs).

Q12 What is the most precious thing in your life?
K: The thing I love the most is skating (laughs).
S: Oh, I was going to say that.
K: Yeah, it's so obvious (laughs). I think it's the encounter with an ice rink.

Q13 What is your favorite body part?
K: I don't have a nose bone so I can crush my whole nose,
S: Wow! That's amazing! (laughs)
K: Ah, I say that all the time.
S: You like that?
K: It's both my inferiority complex and my favorite part. It's something to talk about.
S: Definitely. I also get told I have a nice nose and nice bags under my eyes.
K: Wow, that's nice. I envy you. Oh, and I have a very small face.
S: Oh yeah.
K: I'm really proud of that, that point.
