And it wouldn't necessarily mean bad skates, even just one mistake could already cause someone to drop behind a perfect skate by Rio (which I don't think is likely, but who knows), just because his scoring potential is so high. Unfortunately for Jacob, he has a history of making way more than one mistake in his Free, but if he can do slightly better than usual, he's going to profit a lot from his lead (not to win, I think he'll have to be clean for that, but to stay on the podium, because I'm not seeing Yanhao or Tian pass him even if they go clean and Jacob doesn't).

Poor Rio is under a lot of pressure... the YOG are a big deal for Japanese athletes. Mao Shimada says that this event is her no. 1 goal for the season. Rio is filling the shoes of two prior YOG medallists who went on to become Olympic medallists, so I'm sure he's feeling the pressure. Hopefully he can come back strong in the free (and at least he didn't splat into the boards like Yuma did 4 years ago
Speaking of 4 years ago, the commentary was also god-awful then. It was done by none other than Chris "Sharp as Mustard" Howarth. He got flamed in the Youtube comments of the men's free for assuming the two Russian men would go 1-2, even after they both made mistakes and Yuma had just won bronze at senior JNats. Chris has improved a lot since then, and his commentary at Euros this year was quite solid, but it was clear at the time that he didn't know any of the athletes and wasn't good at hiding his favorites. I'm disappointed to see this trend continue. There are so many great FS commentators out there - I'm sure even Chris would do better this time. Please either don't have commentary or have somone who will be respectful and knowledgeable about all athletes. I'm not expecting Mark Hanretty levels of amazing, but at the very least trying to be positive and kind would go a really long way.

The issue is that they are officially junior but the age difference has to be small, as both skaters have to be born after a certain date and before another. No possibility to extend that for the man, and considering that they all were rather new as well that makes it all the more difficult. So, even if not age-wise, their level would be between novice and junior. I admire them for that, in fact I enjoyed watching them but the commentator compaired them with top sr skaters which seemed a bit unfair and certainly unkind.Sorry if this has been answered before…what level are these teams? Looking at Skating Scores, Behnke/Sauve look like they are the only team that have been together for more than one season. They came 3rd last year in Canadian Novice Nationals, so this is their first year as juniors.Sorry if this has been answered before…what level are these teams?
