Yuzuru Hanyu

So as we have reached the exact 10th anniversary of Yuruzu's first OGM, here come fragments of his interview from 2014 on Sochi Olympics, subtitled in English. It's just cuts, I do remember watching the full version which was much much longer (close to 40 mins, I think) but I am not able to find it now. So enjoy this one!
 
10 years ago today, Yuzuru won his first OGM. His reaction to seeing it on the screen (Patrick skated after him) was just something else... :biggrin:

No, the FS wasn't perfect but damnit after the falls he fought for it, where most would have given up.
 
The creator of Undertale (and composer of the music) from the latest newsletter... he went to see RE_PRAY and he loved it (not surprising!) :biggrin:;)

And sent a very... apt flower arrangement which I am sure Yuzuru loved :laugh:

And here's from Plushenko, Yuzuru's childhood idol and an Olympic rival in the team event which Yuzuru won in men but Russia won as a team.
Plushy withdrew from the individual comp in Sochi due to an injury.
The recording was made at his request by a TV crew invited to his dacha outside of Sochi for this purpose specifically, still during the Olympics, I think. It is is in Russian and Japanese but works very well with YT English subtitles feature, enjoy!

Yuzuru will grace the cover of the anniversary issue of World Figure Skating magazin in its special issue marking , I am not sure, whether it is 100th issue or 100th founding anniversary (?) the translation gets a bit clumsy here. The magazin contains a special interview with Yuzu, given partially to 10th anniversary of his historic OGM in Sochi.. Dated on 29th February.

I have never understood the criticism of that free skate in Sochi. For an Olympic gold a strong short program and a strong free skate are needed and he was the best at that competition. The SP was a new world record - and the first 100+ score ever - and his free skate was also very strong given he went for two types of quads, two 3As in combination and three other jumps in the second half of his program. It was a very cleverly put together program and he was the best also in the free skate, not just the SP. Everyone was a bit tired in the free skate because the SP ended late at night and the FS practice was early in the morning the next day with no free day between the SP and FS. But he was still overall the best. I remember I enjoyed the Sochi competition because it had everything it needed: the Plushenko drama, Yuzu rising to the occasion after his GPF gold where he had his momentum into the Olympics and skated two flawless SPs and a strong FS, and Patrick losing even if the possibility of a win was very much there. It was a historical victory, because Yuzu was the youngest OGM since Dick Button, and he became the first male OGM of Japan in figure skating.

A bit belated happy 200 pages, too - 4464 overall :) if the thread hadn't been split up in 2017....

I think that he didn't move to take a professional award? But he flew round the World to watch RE_PRAY rather than watching it from home with Beyond Live... That's saying a lot!
 
I am proud of the way he didn't give up in the free but still gave it his all even though he must have believed at that point that the gold was lost (and the pressure this 19 year old was under - folk talk with justification about Nathan's pressure in 2018 but it wasn't as bad, he didn't have officials screaming in his face!) so that when Patrick crumbled, Yuzu was clearly and honestly the best in both SP and FS.

And he won Japan's only gold in any field at Sochi. More pressure.

And then gave a glroious performance of White Legend.
