German Fed on Instagram saying that Grimm/Savitskiy are debuting in the GP circuit.



Just to get more confused

Almost seems like Grimm/Savitskiy want one thing but the German fed is trying to force them into another Guess they're getting concerned about the Olympic spot after JvR/S didn't make the Free at Worlds

Or the person running the IG account is very out of the loop

Imo, that is the better choice, they should have an clear path to winning at least another medal at the JGPF and Jr Worlds.

I do wish that Skate Canada did not choose Maddie. She would have another location and then one more Canadian girl would get a spot.

They probably wanted to ensure that Maddie had two spots. She had only qualified for one guaranteed spot. She might have been picked by somewhere else as well, but that was not guaranteed.

Wesley only had one qualified spot too, they managed to get him two spots. But that's probably their thinking, same with assigning Gogolev to SCI when he'd be high on the alternates list.

It used to annoy me no end when Dick Button as a commentator constantly introduced Angela Nikodinov with “and now here comes the refrigerator break.” Unnecessary, Dick. Just comment on her outstanding layback position.

Dick made the refrigerator break comment ONCE, and it was incredibly accurate and not out of line. Angela's program to The Mummy was empty, dull, and skated with zero emotion whatsoever. Lovely layback, yes, which he praised, but that does not make up for 3:50 of boredom.

That's another thing I struggle with Zoomers: everything's always a purity test, and only the narrowest, most sanitized criticisms are permitted.

As a newer fan, I'm used to the epic highs and lows of Canadian skaters who are so brilliant and yet so inconsistent. It was more so referring to said cactusness as opposed to a lack of talent - I think Canada has plenty of talented skaters whose inconcistency is largely a reflection of external factors like training time and international assignments

Yes, I found your initial statement to be apt and accurate.

It's plain to see Schizas has not even come close to fulfilling her potential the past few seasons. The talent is there for her to perennially be top 8 in the World, but I think her skating is regressing, not progressing. Fingers crossed she can pull it together this season.

"Bro" isn't even new. It's been around since at least the 1970s as a word to refer to (male) friends or a general group of people (first men and later gender-neutral in usage), and before that, it was around as a shortened version to refer to your brother since at least the mid-1600s.
"Bromance" (bro+romance) was first recorded in publishing in 2001 - 23 (!) years ago.

I am well aware of the etymology of the word "bro". But the difference is these Zoomers use the word so frequently, almost as a replacement for a period or semicolon. It's madness!

However, I will drop the subject now and I do apologize for including Millennials in my initial geriatric rant. I stand corrected.

Happy to see Grimm/Savitskiy are staying junior for grand prix events! Their disco practice looks really promising.

Great to see the rising Japanese Ice Dance teams at NHK and I presume Sae & Lucas get the host pairs spot. 3 pairs?
Bit worried about Harris & Chan not getting an assignment, hope they are still competing!

The oldest people belonging to Gen Z were 9 when she retired, and a bit less than half of them were not born at all. I doubt anyone from that generation remembers her or Dick Button's commentary to the point of bringing it up 18 years after her career ended.

The person you quoted here is with almost 100% certainty not Gen Z. Also, my mother certainly wouldn't enjoy that tone of commentary, and she's an older lady now (who would be very unhappy at being called that), but I guess that attitude also makes her Gen Z... So if anyone here wants to stay young, now you know what to do.

I am around Gen Z and Millenials every day, and the only time I hear "bro", it is being used in a sarcastic or funny way (like it was in this tweet, which references this clip from a popular TV show). I also don't hear it often at all, and even online, I don't see it being used very frequently anymore, Gen Z has already moved on from that word in a lot of ways. With the internet, slang is changing a lot more rapidly, and the oldest Gen Zers (who are 26 and 27 now) use completely different words in informal settings than the youngest Gen Zers (who are 11 and 12), though there is also some overlap, of course.

Apart from any of that, why is it such a big deal to you? I simply don't understand why I would care about how other people speak. I have so much else to do that I don't have the time or energy to be concerned about the vocabulary used, as long as I understand what someone means.

I heard that Miyu Yunoki (who competed with Shoya Ichihashi in 2021/22 and then split shortly after their only international competition at the Nebelhorn Trophy 2022) might have a new partner, so maybe there will even be a bit of competition for that last host spot?

And maybe if the upper age limit in pairs is raised, Sae & Lucas could compete at two JGPs instead of one Sr GP?

I don't want to get too involved in the off-topic argument, but I want to add one thing that really annoys me: the way that certain words and phrases are now being used to mean the exact opposite of what they used to mean.

Some examples.

• Transparent: It used to be that when you described somebody as being transparent, you were saying that they were dishonest and were hiding things. Now it is being used to mean that the person is being totally honest and has nothing to hide.
  
  
• Sparks flying: It used to be that when you said that there were sparks flying between people, it meant they were fighting / arguing. Now it is being used to mean that they are in love.
  
  
• Sick: It used to be that when you said that something was sick, you were saying it was disgusting. Now it is being used to mean that something is "cool".

With things like this going on, is it any wonder that older people get angry with the way younger people speak?! (And although I am in my 30's, I am placing myself firmly in the older category on this one).

Yes, it still is. Confusion, I understand, but anger? No.

If you get angry about something like words and phrases changing in meaning (which too has been happening since the dawn of language), please just go to therapy, because I don't want to know what else you get angry about. And if you get angry, regardless of the reason, it is your responsibility to control your own actions and words.

And especially for that first word you brought up - transparent - the "old" meaning makes no sense. Transparent is see-through, and you cannot hide anything behind a see-through object.

Words have changed meanings before we were born, during our lifetime and will change after we die. For a language to survive as a spoken language, change is necessary and happens naturally. Why would I get angry at that?

Fun example showing this very well: "gift" (English: present), "Gift" (German: poison), "gift" (Swedish: married) and "Gift" (Swedish: poison). All come from the same Old Norse word "gipt", meaning "to give".
Only English kept the original meaning of the spelling "GIFT" (though German still has "gibt" ("geben" in 3rd person singular) - "to give"), and it changed its meaning in German and Swedish during the medieval times already.
