I just realised that the GP Final for women might be an all Japanese event. It all depends on Amber Glenn.

Higuchi and Sakamoto are clear for the final.
In the suddenly very 'weak' field in Finland, it looks like Matsuike and Yoshida might easily secure their final spots.

That leaves the final two spots to be decided in China. And the competition is fierce. Glenn, Chiba, Watanabe and Sumiyoshi will fight for the two spots. And Kim and Repond are also there to spice it all up, so anything could happen.

They competed at 4CC in Shanghai, so their visas for it may still be valid for Cup of China.

G/K never actually announced on social media that they were going to NHK. But their names did appear on the ISU pairs chart for 24 hours, although I don't know if that implies they confirmed to the ISU or the ISU was just indicating that they were invited?

I'm so happy for G/K although bummed they could have had 2 GPs! G/K replied to someone on their Instagram there wasn't enough time to process Japanese visas for NHK so seems like it was more timing. Looking at the timing of posts/messages, they showed up on ISU pairs chart Thursday before NHK arrival VS Cup of China when they announced on Monday before week of arrival at Cup of China. Those 3 or 4 days extra (Monday earlier in the week vs Thursday end of week) seem valuable if there were any visa processing needs (spoken from someone that has a "weak" passport) or perhaps G/K had Chinese visas from last year 4CC which is probably more likely.

I personally think there should probably be some additional guidelines for withdrawing from GPs 7 days or more in advance versus 2 or 3 days before expected travel and arrival as it seemed what happened with G/K for NHK. There seem to be soooo many GP withdrawals this season. I would think skaters would know a week in advance if they can do the GP or not versus waiting until the last minute.

They were in Japan for Worlds 2023, so really seems like it was just timing when they received the invitation.

I'd rather the ISU and feds just keep tabs on how their skaters are doing and encourage them not to wait until the last minute to withdraw. It seems to me that few withdrawals have to do with sudden injuries and most can be prudently foreseen.
Otherwise skaters with weak passports will always have a competitive disadvantage. And this is the case with pretty much any small fed from the global south. And Russian nationals at the moment.

You’re right politicking is probably the wrong word to use. Sorry English is my second language. I’ll go back to just reading and learning I meant it seems small feds have less clout to be able to communicate and share needs to give their skaters these last minute opportunities versus bigger federations who don’t have to think of those same challenges.

I also really like the Australian pair Hektor and Anastasia repping the Pacific countries, although it seems that even the last couple seasons they have done fewer competitions in comparison to other top pairs. Of course I have no idea, illness as Golubeva mentioned with COVID, injury, funding or something else, but I do think there are competitive disadvantages to those teams with weak passports. Just the state of the world!
