Kazuki Tomono

OK, now I'm back from the dead, can I just say that 'Tanin no Kankei' is amazing. I said this on Twitter, but his skating has become sooo smooth, there's almost like a Shoma-esque fluidity to it, together with a Dai-chan inspired sassiness. This is not an easy song to pull off, and yet he his all the musical accents whilst still performing the character. SOOOOO good!

Here are a couple of updates from yesterday:

Today, he has posted this:

Since he's in LA I think it's pretty reasonable to assume he's doing choreography with Misha again (yay!). I just hope he gets to rest a bit, the combo FaOI + intercontinental travel is pretty tough.

But the biggest news of the day is this - Daiichi Juken Group launched Kazuki's own brand of curry 🍛

From the press release:

Figure skater Kazuki Tomono's winning meal: curry
As part of our CSR activities aimed at improving the athletes' competition environment, we signed our first partnership agreement with figure skater Kazuki Tomono for the 23-24 season. The project started in late autumn 2023.

TOMONO CURRY", for which Tomono has been very particular.
When Tomono supervised the production of the curry, he had three key points in mind.
(i) It should be a Japanese home-style curry that people would want to eat on overseas expeditions. (ii) It should be a chicken curry with ingredients close to the Tomono family's home-style curry, so that the customer can feel the texture of the curry. (iii) The spiciness of the curry itself is medium-hot (the spiciness can be adjusted by adding the spices provided) in order to make it a product that everyone, from children to adults, can enjoy.
Several prototypes were made based on Tomono's particular points, and as a result of repeated improvements, the result is a European-style chicken curry that everyone can enjoy.

The characteristic of TOMONO CURRY is that the ingredients are so large and filling that it is rare for a instant-pouch curry. It is also a healthy curry that contains no colouring or preservatives, making it a product that not only athletes, but also health-conscious people and children can enjoy with peace of mind. In addition, the packaging has been designed with Tomono's special attention to detail.

'TOMONO CURRY' bonus trading card

A trading card is enclosed in the package of TOMONO CURRY, along with the instant curry and special spices. There are eight trading cards in total. All of them use freshly photographed images. Each of the eight designs also includes a trading card with Kazuki Tomono's autograph, in limited quantities.

Kazuki's range of merch is honestly so impressive... Especially crazy if you think that figure skating is (or has become) a niche sport. Once again, I feel really happy for him, but also very jealous of Japanese fans! I hope it sells really well.

Kurasawa-san announced Kazuki's Mainichi column will be updated today - the theme is a Hiraike team project?

and the maker of Kazuki's t-shirt in this picture tweeted about him:

Meanwhile, Daiichi Juken tweeted about the new Tomono trading cards, to be included in the curry:

TOMONO CURRY trading cards Loose Commentary 🍀
Today we introduce you to the 8 types of bonus trading cars TMI.

The images selected for the are both the ver with make-up and the usual natural Tomono-kun!
Both sides of the trading card are hologram ✨.

The back side has Tomono-kun's special package design!

TOMONO CURRY Trading Card (2) Cat ears 😺.
The pose was chosen from several poses that are popular among music artists these days!

Tomono-kun used to have dog ears 🐶👮, so we chose cat ears for the bonus trekkie! So we chose this one: 🐈‍⬛

I love the idea of trading cards in Kazuki foodies ^ ^ Perhaps his 'brand' can expand to include ramens and other meals Kazuki likes? The people around Kazuki have a lot of great ideas. A meal with a Kazuki pic would be something I'd be interested in, too, if it was sold at his competitions ^ ^ The cat ear pic is cute.

Absolutely, imagine a whole range of TOMONO foods... It'd be awesome!

Kazuki's latest Mainichi article was published yesterday - as usual, it's a paid article, but from what I read he talks about a Team Hiraike project in which some of the juniors inherit his programmes. Sounds very interesting!

and JSF released their 2024 calendar for national competitions: https://www.skatingjapan.or.jp/figure/event/?event_year=2024
Kinki regionals, which Kazuki is required to participate this year, it's slightly earlier than usual, on 26-29 September. That's only three weeks after One Piece on Ice... I hope it'll be OK for Kazuki

Bam, there goes my hope of seeing both a Challenger and a GP if Kazuki and/or Sota are sent to Europe. No Budapest. I guess I'm glad JSF is not ignoring Nepela anymore, so hooray in this respect, but I wish it wasn't the year when Nepela's timing is absolutely stupid, and overlapping with GP so the skaters from the first two GP can't go there. Looks like the Finlandia jumbotron is my best Kazuki/Sota sighting chance this season... or Germany. I hope the proposed JPN entries for Germany and Italy are released soon, to help me decide.

EDIT - actually, waaait... Kazuki might be sent to Nepela, looking at his GP schedule. Sota and Shun can't due to SC overlap, and it would be hard for any of Koshiro, Kao and Nozomu to get to Slovakia from SA, which finishes Oct 20 whereas Nepela starts on Oct 24. So, that leaves just Yuma (doubt it, but possible), Tatsuya, *and* Kazuki. That would be a gift from heaven as I might be able to go if Kazuki is there. Tatsuya being there is very likely, as he doesn't have any GP.

When I saw the international competition schedule, it solidified my belief that Kazuki won't be assigned to an Autumn Challenger  Asia Open, Lombardia or Nebelhorn would be too close to One Piece on Ice/Kinki, and Nepela would be just a week before GP France...
Furthermore, JSF announced the list of participants for their Olympic training camp in Italy, and surprise, surprise, Kazuki is not there 🙃 I think they are making it clear who is in their Olympic pool and those are the skaters they will prioritise IMO.

Shae Lynn Bourne is doing Kazuki's sp, per Nonno article.
Thank you, here's the tweet/article

It had been a while since we had a proper progress report, so I'm really happy - includes some endearing tidbits such as him going back home between Hyoen and FaOI just to do the laundry (mood) and his grandma helping him with his costume for Tanin no Kankei 🥹

As for the choreographer info, mixed feelings... Yes, it's always interesting to see him trying new styles, but also the SP is his greatest weakness so he NEEDS to get it right. I would have feel more at ease if both his programmes had been choreographed by Misha.

Per his Insta..Misha is in Chiba..Imissed the list of those going to Italy..

Seconded, who is going to Italy? I haven't seen it yet. Leaving Kazuki out of Olympic season calculations would be really really short-sighted. Even if the JSF's minds are on the Golden Trio, they still need a skater with a proven, solid mindset in big competitions. As much as I love Sota, he's prone to succumbing to his nerves when a lot is at stake and he's counted on. More than anyone but Yuma among the top Japanese men, Kazuki is a skater capable of finishing in the OG top 6.

I do hope they assign Challengers fairly. If JSF don't even send their top 6 to CS, I'll be beyond disappointed. I fear a bit that Germany is once more in Kazuki's future if he goes, because JSF likes to send him to early Challengers for some reason I don't get. But I'd be super glad if it was Nepela. Kazuki proved as early as 2018 that he's able to compete well twice in a week's span, so I wouldn't worry about GP France being too close. Having already been in Europe for a week or so could actually be good for him in terms of jet-lag fatigue.

About Shae-Lynn, perhaps her choreo will suit Kazuki's style! She used to be a dancer, and Kazuki is the best dancer among JPN men, so I have hope. ☺️ It will depend on the music.

I love your optimism 🥹

The 'special group' is going to Italy - the golden trio + Sota. There's also going to be a gala there, and you can buy tickets, so check it out! I think there's some info on the Japanese Ice Shows thread.

Kazuki met Daisuke Murakami in California:

Meanwhile, Daiichi Juken Group has been releasing some more info about the curry trading cards, this one confirms he got new skates:

This is one of the most precious shots I had the privilege of photographing in costume, and I selected this shot so that you could hear Underground's music.
My personal favourite is the fluffy hair on the back of his head!

When he was wearing the UNDERGROUND costume, we had to wear skates!
They were his favourite skates for many years, before they were replaced by the new ones he wears today.
They have competed in various competitions together.
