Today feels like a good day to share some fun news. So on April 17, the day I heard the news about Stephane's ice show, I booked a hotel in Shompery "just in case". On May 1st, I bought tickets to the two shows that will be held in August. An odd choice for someone who is not all that into ice shows -- but I do think maybe this will be my "last hurrah" in terms of being able to see Sho live. So I am excited to be traveling to Switzerland in August. I'm looking forward not only to the shows but to seeing beautiful Shompery!

This is so exciting, Arriba! I wish you a lovely journey and two great shows featuring our guy Shoma. Thrilled for you. The town looks so cute I know you'll love it. Buon viaggio!

Interesting. I wondered if he would do other videos besides the members only. Ah, where is Hama-san when we need him for translations. I can get a translation on my phone, but this one was total nonsense. :laugh2: Sho might need to get a few art lessons from Gramps.

From what I understand, solo travel is a more accepted concept in Japan than in the US (and perhaps the West in general). It's still a pleasant surprise to hear about the solo tour package selling out, though! 🙂 (On a personal note, I have met numerous people who are shocked to hear that I went to France and Japan by myself!)

the few times I didn't travel solo : hated it... even going to a museum can be a pain in the butt... while I am looking at something with great interest, the "other" wants to keep moving.. or vice versa...

solo or uno life is best ;)
 
Just a little message. Shoma's smile is so capable of cheering me up. Some not so enjoyabe things happened in the last few weeks, but that smile really helps, the one when he is doing the Olympic support thing with children especially.

There is clearly a reason why Shoma is an artist on the ice...and not an artist with pen and paper. 😂

For some reason I think Shoma's drawing was cute...even though I have enough artistic knowledge to understand that his version of Emma looks like a furry frog. 🐸😂

:ot: I appreciate the joys of solo travel, although there is a part of me that wishes I had a significant other in my life, even if they may not wish to spend as much time as me at certain tourist sites or find interest in things I find boring. I hate to admit this to you, but I sadly will not return to your fine city of Montreal unless I am with someone else or going to board a connecting flight. A homeless woman in downtown Montreal repeatedly tried to steal my luggage while I was waiting for my Uber to the airport. It was an immensely frustrating experience to keep my luggage away from her and I'm glad I only let her have my cell phone charger.

Montreal is a big city with major society problems. I had warned you guys about it... Alone or not, that homeless woman may have tried her luck anyway. Montreal is not as bad as some other cities I have visited btw...but there is a strong sense of angst in certain areas of town. I think you are the one who was staying in Chinatown? I would not have recommended that neighbourhood..... You just cannot leave your bags on the ground... I hold my bag with both hands... And when I'm NYC, if I had had five hands, they would have been glued to my belongings... A friend of mine fell asleep on the subway in NYC. When he woke up, his pockets from his jeans had been removed. Cut off with a knife apparently. His phone and wallet were gone....

Yes, I was indeed staying in the Sonder Lambert near Chinatown. It was a great place aside from the difficulty in getting an Uber from there back to the airport, which led me to try getting one in a sketchy area. I don't have five hands either, but my legs certainly helped block her attempts to steal my luggage. I'm glad I was able to keep my wits about me and retain almost all of my belongings. And I truly enjoyed my time in the city before that happened...

I feel quite bad for your friend. NYC is one of those cities I would love to visit someday...but knowing that I will have to be extra-vigilant if I go there isn't encouraging. :(

I was never scared in NYC.. but yeah... I didn't like LA all that much. San Francisco was nice to me but some people find it sketchy (depends on the neighbourhood I guess).. I disliked Seattle... and Chicago, well I was with friends who made sure I would have a safe time ;) I would think that 95% of Montreal is safer than these five US cities... (and do not talk to me about Detroit.. that IS scary)

I am sorry your experience was tarnished because of that incident.. but my point : do not think it's Montreal.. it's just big city problems... happens everywhere... in Europe it's pickpockets.. I was watching myself like crazy in Madrid... It is just the thing that the ones who want to take advantage of you can spot a tourist so easily and especially those who don't have yet good reflexes.. take it as a learning experience and be ready for your next trip, wherever it may be :)

if you are thinking about next worlds in Montreal, you may have to wait for 90 years :)
