Andrei Mozalev

Some news.
Andrei held a stream on Boosty for his fans.
The conversation lasts about 1 hour. I hope that in the next week the interview will be officially published and I will be able to post it here. He told a lot of interesting details about his new life in Moscow and a bit about his new team.

By the way, he said that all the students in his group have their short programs ready, and the free programs are in process. He himself chose the music for the short program from the music tracks suggested by the coaches. It will be rather sad, lyrical music.

I also decided to do program rankings and costume rankings again, like I did last summer. It was a very nervous season, but Andrei has 9 programs, including many show numbers, and 10 costumes, so it will be a full-fledged top 10, what luck, I have enough material.
I think I'll start with the program rankings and then do the costume rankings. At 1 ranking position per day, that means I'll be done in less than a month.

What are the chances it is a story of a middle-aged man reflecting sadly upon his past? Possibly, a mariner...

Hello to all mozalebots surviving this season! Yes, we were in for a lot of grief and incredible upheaval. Andrei had a lot of new experiences and a dramatic change of fortune. He started the season with one team in St. Petersburg, and finished with another team in Moscow.
I hope that everyone who followed him still does.

In any case, we made it through the year.
Let's end the season with the traditional rating of Andrei's programs! This season there were a lot of them, so let's put them in order. Here are the top 9 programs and images of Andrei Mozalev in the season 2023-2024.
Let's go!

“Black Magician” show number.

Performed at Evgeny Plushenko's show on open ice in November 2023.
Choreographer: Dmitriy Mikhailov
Music: Pyotr Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake.
Image: evil wizard

I could say that this is the most unprepared, hastily made number. But in my ranking on a high position will be the show number “Black Man”, which was remade literally the night before the performance. So the preparation time here is pretty good.

This classic number in the show Plushenko was represented, as we say in Russia, a bug and a toad, that is, everyone. We have seen it performed by sports couples and single skaters. A classic plot, music familiar from childhood, an understandable character, quite convenient for presentation. Andrei tried to present the story as skillfully as he could, given the lack of time to practice and prepare the choreography.
It all looks very nice, and he is very good, there is only one minus.
Andrei doesn't look like an evil wizard at all in this number.

Perhaps he's too kind for the role. In fact, he is a very pleasant person, a kind and tactful young man. Still, his acting skill has its limits, and he just couldn't work on his acting, try on the image of a person who is absolutely not like him.

But in another show number for Plushenko's show, where he also had to show a bad guy, he manages to reveal him in his own way, through a spiritual crisis, as he likes to do. We'll talk about it later.

And here we're looking at Mozalev, who is just skating beautifully for the visitors of the outdoor rink.

I don't mean to say that I don't like this number at all. It's good in its own way and leaves a nice impression. Andrei is still a great skater and his skill sets him apart from others. He also showed that he definitely watched the ballet “Swan Lake” and memorized the choreographic chips from there, which he tried to transfer to the ice.

Heck, it wasn't that easy. Andrei's choreographic training is very good, because he was literally trained by a ballet dancer. We now have a rough idea of what Andrei would look like in a program to classical ballet music. Many fans after this performance began to write that they would like to see him in a program with classical music. He's really really good at ice ballet.
This is undoubtedly a big plus.

Overall, I'm not a hater of this program. He's just not as good as I'd like him to be. I don't love it as much as others, which is why it's last in the rankings.

Come back tomorrow if you want to find out who ranked #8!

Here again the ranking of Andrei Mozalev's programs for the 2023-2024 season, and today we find out who wasn't bad enough to fall to the last line in the ranking, but still not good enough. So, #8 ranking, and there's a ....

“The Godfather Drosselmeyer” show number

Performed at Evgeny Plushenko's show on open ice in December 2023-January 2024.
Choreographer: Dmitriy Mikhailov
Music: Pyotr Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker
Image: a good wizard - godfather.

At the end of the year, Andrei needed money and signed a contract with Evgeny Plushenko to perform in his show at the outdoor skating rink in Gorky Park. Figure skaters were to go on the ice twice: in the morning and in the evening. And every morning and every evening during the New Year holidays Andrei went out and performed two numbers to the music from the ballet “The Nutcracker”. In total, he had four outings on the ice every day for ten days.
As chance would have it, Moscow was experiencing Christmas cold, down to -31 degrees Celsius (which is very, very, very cold for Moscow, you can literally turn into ice). Andrei did not give up. He put on thermal underwear, covered his ears with a headband and went out on the ice again and again. That's how the year 2024 began for him.
Since the contract was signed for quite a long period of time, Andrei was well prepared, he trained his programs on the ice and worked on choreography beforehand. This time he was not forced to remember how they dance on the stage, he was able to bring his own choreography, more familiar to the ice arena.
One number turned out to be very original, memorable, almost a masterpiece. The second was unremarkable. This is the image of the Godfather Drosselmeyer, a good wizard from a fairy tale. From the number even video recordings are almost not preserved, I can offer only this fragment.

Andrei again does not really fit the type for the proposed role. Godfather Drosselmeyer should be a middle-aged man (real middle-aged, Andrei, your acting mid-life crisis doesn't fit here). When this role is played by Plushenko himself, he looks harmonious in it. Andrei looks like a chubby young man who has put on his father's suit. And he only skates beautifully again.
Why is this number ranked higher than the previous one? Well, Andrei here portrays a kind character, it looks more natural, since he himself is good-natured.
But he also managed to cope with the role of a demon, and even twice during the season in two different programs. By the way, have you ever thought about the fact that in almost all the programs of the last season Andrei portrays either an angel on earth or the devil of hell? I wonder if the choreographers really see him that way.
We have a few more variations of angel, fallen angel and suffering evil on the list, so don't miss out!
Come back tomorrow, it will be interesting.

I'm back. Where are you? I'm coming for you!

Show number “Gde ty?” (“Where are you?”)

Performed at the Tutberidze show.

Music: Tri dnya dozhdya (Three days of rain) - “Gde ty?” (“Where are you?”)

Choreographers: Denis Lunin, partly Daniil Gleichengauz, Eteri Tutberidze

Image: a desperate stalker in love.

Hello again! Are you here again? And in seventh place again, really?
Yeah, I remind you, last year this program was also on the seventh place in the rating, but then it was the last place. This time, two other programs were lower. Apparently, during the year I became more favorable to it.

The pluses of the program are still the same: Andrei here does not try to look older than he is, he talks to his peers about the problems that are relevant to them in a language they understand. This music is very popular among alternative rock fans in Russia, so Andrei is significantly expanding his audience with young adults and teenagers. Girls like this program very much. It's about suffering, but it's very driving and fast, it doesn't give the impression of tedium. Andrei has to sweat a lot, running on the ice and keeping up with the music.
Finally, it's his personal choice, what he really listens to in the car or when he puts headphones in his ear, trying to separate himself from the world. This music inspires him, it inspires the audience, and that's cool.

The cons? I suppose they leveled out over the course of the year. Yes, the choreography has been molded hastily, but this year Andrei presented this program for a month every two or three days, before that he performed it many times in training. He has really gotten good at it, achieving a certain degree of mastery. His new choreographers also made some adjustments to the choreography. The number started to look better. I attach two versions of the performance of this program: under special lighting and under normal light.

Why is it not top 5? Well, after all, this program is not a new one and I'm a bit bored with it. But it is definitely what the audience expects from the show. I would like the next show that will be staged for Andrei in the new team to be something like this. A fresh, bright story for the youngsters.

Andrei had better showcase numbers this season. Like what? Come back tomorrow, I'll tell you.

The closer we get to the top 5, the harder it is for me to rank the programs, because I like them all very much, and it's hard to find a reason to pick on them. Nevertheless, my top 5 formed very easily, and I had no doubts about any position. Except for the last one. The fifth and sixth positions were swapped at the last moment. Two show programs, both beautiful, inspiring, but... Let's find out what our candidate lacked to enter the lucky five.

The L'istante Showcase

Performed on The Ilya Averbukh Show.

Music: Peter Nalich - L'istante

Choreographer: Ilya Averbukh

Image: a young man in love with blazing eyes.

What happened here, who died in the forest and why did Mozalev suddenly want a romantic showpiece to Italian music?

Well, let's start by saying that it's not Italian music, but a song in Italian written and performed by Russian indie musician Peter Nalich. You may know him as he performed at Eurovision with the song “Lost and forgotten”. Unformatted, but a very talented guy. The Russian musician released a whole album of songs in Italian, he called it “VIVAMUS”, @elektra blue, check out the irony.

Vola mia canzone lontano

Ti dirò allor dolce parole d'amore

Sei la sola ch'io abbia mai amato

Senti come si placa al vento canzone

Com'e breve l'istante del' onde

Apparently, Ilya Averbukh is also a connoisseur of his work, as he has already put numbers to this music several times. For example, for Dmitry Aliev.

Further everything was very simple. Andrei did not receive an invitation to the Channel One Cup and accepted an offer to replace Matvey Vetlugin at Averbukh's shows in Sochi and Tula on the same dates. Matvey took Andrei's place, Andrei ended up replacing Matvey, although it should have been the other way around. Well, it doesn't matter so much if we ended up with such a marvelous number.

For Andrei, Averbukh set the number with a completely different mood than for Dmitry Aliev, and my God, how much I love this mood! How much I love the kind of Andrei we almost never see! How good it is that we were shown that he can be like this: a light-hearted, easy-going, smiling young man in love. Just for that mood alone, so rare, it was worth staging this number. Young and in love Mozalev is no less beautiful than a character with a midlife crisis or a personal crisis immersed in reflection. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for showing him like this. It's like “Juno and Avos,” but without the anguish of inevitable separation.

If it's so good, why isn't this show number in the top 5?
Oh, well, it's a completely secondary, even tertiary production by Averbukh. For example, he staged a dozen programs for Yagudin with the same mood and the same choreography. And Matvey too. It's just that this time he had Andryusha and it looked fresh and unfamiliar on him.
The next show number turned out to be much more original, although I didn't expect it. We'll talk tomorrow when we start discussing the top five. Bye-bye!

Hello everyone, I'm back! We are flying into the top 5, and here are only the best programs, each of which is a decoration of a skater's portfolio. For some reason, I had no trouble at all ranking them, although there may be those who want to argue. This is normal and only fuels interest.
So, let's see who climbed so high, having shoved off the previous candidate (and I like the program under “Moments” very much, despite its shortcomings). Just someone came to me at night and whispered in my ear, demanding that I raise this work in my rankings and at the same time put more marzipan in a dark corner behind my bookcase. How could I not comply?

“The Mouse King” show number.

Performed at Evgeny Plushenko's show on open ice in December 2023-January 2024.
Choreographer: Dmitry Mikhailov
Music: Pyotr Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker (part of the Mouse King)
Image: demonic creature, suffering evil.

2024-01-13-09-54-18.png

Remember when I said that of the two numbers presented at Plushenko's show, one turned out to be completely uninteresting, although visually pleasing, and the other was almost a masterpiece? Well, we've gotten to the “almost masterpiece.” And it's only in fifth place, folks, can you imagine that? Come to think of it, what would be higher, what incredible programs?

Meticulous and attentive to details Andrei took into account the experience of “Black Magician” and not only worked on the choreography of the number, but also tried to give his best as an actor, to make a performance on the ice. And he succeeded, oh, he succeeded very well! He became a real star of the number and the show as a whole. He shows maximum charisma and outshines the backup dancers (his “handy mice” - girls from the synchronized skating group - went out on the ice together with Andrei).

The image of the mouse king is also often interpreted by different skaters in Christmas ice shows. Each performer brings something different to the interpretation of the image that is close to him. The ironic Mouse King performed by the overplaying Matvey Vetlugin is a caricature and evokes contempt and pity. The Mouse King, played by Mark Kondratyuk, suppresses everyone with his charisma. Andrei, on the other hand, has chosen his own way: his Mouse King is a withdrawn, aloof, tragic, beautiful and dangerous character, a kind of Shakespearean villain who realizes how evil is consuming him more and more, but can't stop and sinks deeper into darkness. Wow, and that's the usual entertaining show on ice for Christmas, folks. A whole show with its own dramatization from Andrei Mozalev.

Is anyone gonna do “Hamlet” on skates? We have a candidate for the lead role.

I really like this program, and for a long time it has been in my personal top 3. I suggest you watch two recordings: in the morning light and in the evening light.

Light

Darkness

Remember when I said that Andrei's best programs this season are all either about angels and light or demons and darkness? This is a very entertaining number, and I was ready to give it a medal, but... There was another demon-themed show number that was better than this one. It had more complex material that was harder to interpret, you had to work through a lot of layers of meaning and cultural references. And it came out much more profound.

You've probably already guessed what I'm talking about.
See you tomorrow!

I had another idea. Since Andrei's cooperation with Davydenko and Lunin is officially over (obviously, he will not return to them under any circumstances), it would be a good idea to make a rating of Andrei's programs that they have put on for him over the years. I think I'll limit myself to the top 10 as well, so as not to consider all programs for pre-Novice Andrei, Novice Andrei and Young Junior Andrei.
I think we need to capture all the positive things about their partnership and summarize it.
I will most likely do this after the two already scheduled seasonal rankings.

Yesterday's master class of Andrei in St. Petersburg, Chance Arena

Good evening everyone, I hope you are not suffering from alcoholism, mental confusion, insomnia and headaches. Otherwise, the next issue will be very upsetting. Not Andrei, he's wonderful as always, but the story itself. So, let's continue our journey into the world of demonic literary characters, and in the top 4 we have....

🏅The Black Man show program.

Performed once at the show tournament "Russian Challenge".

Choreographer: Betina Popova.

Music: melodeclamation by Sergei Bezrukov, excerpts from Sergei Esenin's poem "Black Man".

Image: demonic alter ego of a suffering man.

It was a real tough task, and he pulled it off, I insist on that. Folks, if you have a little idea of what Russian poetry of the early 20th century is, how complex a phenomenon it is, you can put a lifetime monument on ice for one attempt to realize, penetrate and interpret it.
This time Andrei had been looking for ideas for a showcase number for the contest for a long time, and his fan club suggested him to put a number to this song. Betina Popova liked this idea. A hurried staging of the number in a few days began.

At the general run-through both the number and the props (huge mirrors) were criticized, and Andrei was almost excluded from the number of participants. In order to save the situation, the team had to urgently buy an ordinary mirror in a hypermarket and urgently redo the whole number. They spent most of the night on the ice and left around 1 a.m. And it was this hastily prepared number that we saw on the show.
If I didn't know the backstory, I would say that Andrei's performance was very cool. And knowing the back story, I admire him even more. I was present at the stadium and waited for this number, roughly knowing its content - and I was blown away by it. No one has ever performed so professionally, beautifully and thrillingly before him, he literally crushed his opponents with his powerful and beautiful skating.

In this program Andrei begins to reveal himself as an actor in a new way. He perfectly creates an image, keeps in tension, playing the suffering and tormented protagonist, then sticky and dangerous (and in this case not even attractive) ironic evil alter ego, the inner voice humiliating the hero. The emotion of anger was played worse, Andrei is too calm and restrained for that, but this emotion of realization, when the hero realizes that all this time he was fighting with himself - one of the most amazing moments of his acting career, if you can call it that.

elCODhZX_Gk.jpg

Though no. That sardonic and ironic chuckle at the words "appearing smiling and simple is the highest art in the world" is the peak of his acting career so far. What a shame no one was able to capture it in a photo! Ok, take that creepy face.

At that moment I realized that the Black Man had displaced the Mouse King in my ranking, because I never thought that Mozalev could be so frightening.

Of course, I find it totally insulting and unprofessional that the jury did not recognize this number with any of the prizes. But unfortunately, I can't include it in the top three either. After all, it was a hastily staged number, which, unfortunately for me, we will not see again. But I won't forget it, I promise! This program is forever in my heart.

Let's consider that according to the American custom I awarded this number with an additional medal, as they award the player who took the 4th place in the competition.

Well, it seems that we have finished the show programs, it's time to move on to the competition programs. As you can easily guess, there are three of them and they took all three places on the podium. You want the details? Come back tomorrow, I will tell you everything and introduce you to the bronze medalist.

Welcome back! Well, if I haven't forgotten anything, we are already discussing the top three and handing out medals to them. As you have already understood, all the prizes went to the competition programs. Yes, they were controversial this season, many people didn't like them, there were a lot of criticisms, but that's not to say that they were terrible or unsuccessful. Rather, they left us perplexed. Sometimes a good program just can't find its way to the heart of whoever is watching, and it depends on many reasons. Well, let's discuss the first medalist, and that is....

🥉 Short Program (for the first half of the season) "An Angel Banished to Earth."
Performed at all competitions in September-November 2023. The best performing - at the GP (R) stage in Ufa.
Choreographer: Denis Lunin
Music: Apocalyptica - Romance
Image: a sad angel among people

I was most impressed by this program performance at Tamara Moskvina's master class at Igora. It looked amazing in a simple black costume, although the jumping elements failed:

Yes, I know all the complaints about this program, but I continue to insist that it was good in its own way. It's beautiful, very complex music, not an easy idea, difficult to realize, to present on ice. Let's say that it was supposed to be something big, but it was not the right size for the choreographer and the person who was supposed to present it on the ice. As a result, it remained only a shadow of something beautiful that could have been. A symbol of the word "unrealized."

I think that at some point Davydenko's team began to perceive Andrei and his capabilities in a less than adequate way, assuming that he could do anything. The reality turned out to be a bit more prosaic, so, as a result, Andrei joined another team, where his abilities are assessed realistically and do not require too much. Well, that's a thing of the past.

I like this program anyway, and it was not a passing program, it was discussed, it attracted attention, though it was not a small masterpiece like Red Hand. Maybe Andrei with his perfectionism will want to return to this music someday and put a new program or show number to it. But this program is forever in the past along with the season. It's not a winner, of course. But it gets bronze in my rankings, because it's a cool idea and should be encouraged.

I'll announce the vice-champion tonight, and tomorrow you'll find out who turned out the best. Don't miss a thing!

🥈Free skate "Angel Who Wants to Be Human".

Performed at all competitions during the 2023-2024 season.
The best skate is probably at the 2nd stage of the St. Petersburg Cup.

Choreographer: Denis Lunin, partly Daniil Gleichengauz and Eteri Tutberidze.
Music: My Body is a Cage by Peter Gabriel; The Room by Marcel Dettman and Ben Klock.
Image: an angel being reborn as a human being.

I'll say the same thing I said about the Apocalyptica short program: it was a very cool idea, but it didn't work out. It was something fresh and completely atypical for FS in terms of idea, holy dumplings, who could have thought of combining Peter Gabriel's singing with his tearful confessionality - and cold ruthless technominimal? Only one person in the FS world could have thought of such a thing. This program, like the short one under "Apocalyptica", had its own atmosphere, oppressive but surprisingly appealing. It was probably best presented at the Panin-Kolomenkin Memorial.

Also, of course, we all observed a kind of symbolism when on RusNat an injured athlete fought with his body to the gloomy chants of "My body is a cage".
Well, and the best skate of the program, when everything is worked right, was this one, at the St. Petersburg Cup.

It was a strange, non-standard and informal program. Neither the athlete nor the judges understood how to treat it. Despite all this, I appreciate it highly at least for the opportunity to go beyond the usual. It was one of those things that are great in theory, but cause disappointment when realized in real life. But if we talk about Andrei, if you notice, almost all his last season programs don't fully live up to what they were intended to be, so that's no reason to rate her lower than others. I'm in love with this strange program in my own way, and I'll remember it often.

Well, what's left is to award a medal to the most beautiful program of the past season, and I already knew who it would be at the beginning of this year. Well, you'll find out tomorrow, come and stay tuned.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner! Quite expected and well-deserved, I think.

🥇Short program (for the second half of the season) "Angel banished to Earth"

Performed twice: at the Russian Championships in December 2023 and at the Spartakiade of the Strongest in February 2024. The best skate... I think, Spartakiade.
Choreographer: Denis Lunin, partly Daniil Gleichengauz and Eteri Tutberidze.
Music: Kai Schumacher - Out of Space (Prodigy cover).
Image: a winged angel among people.

Perhaps it's for the best that the judges didn't like the program to "Apocalyptica" and that after two GP(R) stages they insisted that the music be changed. I really like "Romance" and the mood of pinching painful sadness and longing, but this was something very different, new and fresh. And it turned out really, really well, they struggled but pretty much jumped the bar that they had easily jumped in previous seasons.

Yes, the concept of storytelling with one story told in two parts broke immediately. Yes, the choreography was simply adapted to the new music, adjusted to the musical accents. But how great the new program played with colors! What music! What a light mood! What musicality Andrei has! He perfectly conveys this complex piece of music, almost nowhere straying!

This music was once suggested to Gleichenhaus for Alyona Kostornaya, because only Andrei and Alyona can skate to such music, only they have sufficient mastery of the skate. Now Gleichenhaus is going through his musical archives and revisiting all the music he was offered for Alyona because he has a worthy performer.

I like literally everything in this program: the atmosphere, the mood, hitting the musical accents, the fact that Andrei was given the opportunity to demonstrate his skating skill and musical ear. Pay attention to the steps sequence, it's so beautiful! And how much he enjoys performing it! I even think he's singing to himself, our musical boy.

In short, this program may not have been a masterpiece like "Red Hand" last season, but it was definitely very good. And I consider it the best program of the season.

Well, my ranking is complete, congratulations to myself and to you! Andrei has already received two new programs, both have very good music. We'll meet next summer and see how the first season turned out in the new team. In the meantime, I'm taking a few days off and then I'll load up my costume rankings. Bye, everybody!
