2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

Budapest Trophy entries:

Women
Madeline Schizas

Ice Dance
Lajoie/Lagha

No men are entered, so likely no Challenger for Gogolev before SCI. Maddie is also maxed out on Challengers and can't do any more after Budapest.
Does Canada not have any other Senior lady to send but Maddie? You're not going to build up the ladies division by sending the same skater every single time especially one who has not progressed as a skater in nearly 3 years..

There are women who should be sent to competitions, and hopefully they'll get them once the Grand Prix starts. Skate Canada has Trophy Metropole, Tallinn Trophy, Warsaw Cup and Golden Spin of Zagreb on the Events page for Challengers. Trophy Metropole and Tallinn Trophy were added at the same time as Denis Ten Memorial, so I think it's a sign that they're planning on sending skaters to those events.

Hopefully they will include more women who have performed well over the summer. There were some good performances there from Breken Brezden, Katherine Medland Spence and Fee Ann Landry that met, or came close to, the domestic scoring threshold for international assignments (166 total.) Uliana Shiryaeva got an assignment, so I'm hopeful that the other women will get them too.

I think Maddie was the only eligible woman to send to Montréal worlds - i recall Kaiya was the national champion but couldn't achieve the qualifying TES in the SP. Plus the other women were not sent to enough international competitions. So the fed appears to be taking a bit more action in this regard.

I was impressed by Megan Woodley in the Ankara JGP. Hope to see her competing again!
Also when Mark talked about how far she travels to the rink for training, I thought I could not commit to that for a sport 😅

Robert Brodie interviews Maddie. Also some discussion with Kaiya, and a round-up of Canadian skating results from today.

One might suggest she had little choice in the matter. Skate Canada had let its national team skaters know back in the spring that it expected each of them to find a summer competition opportunity (and we’re choosing that word to reinforce our earlier point). And so it was that Schizas needed to have two programs ready to roll for the Cranberry Cup International, the leadoff event in this season’s Challenger Series, which was held during the second weekend of August just outside of Boston.

Trophy Metropole entries from the Events page!

Senior Women
Breken Brezden
Fee Ann Landry

Senior Ice Dance
Bashynska/Beaumont

Junior Men
Parker Heiderich

Junior Women
Aleksa Volkova
Reese Rose

Also the remaining JGP entries have been confirmed on the page. Kaiya and Uliana were finally added to Denis Ten Memorial.

Is this really happening?
I cannot believe my eyes!!

Fee Ann and Breken - our other two 166+ domestic women are actually getting a challenger event. Wow! So, 6/6 for our 166+ ladies. I’m so happy.

Also, Reese and Aleksa are next in line along with Parker. So, they do get some international exposure as a reward for just missing the JGP circuit.

Okay 👍 Skate Canada is improving. Now, if they can just get more than one event, I will be thrilled.

I'm really pleased with those selections. :)

I would also like to see John Kim sent out again. He did really well in the SP at Ankara. I haven't watched the free yet, but I can see from the scores that he had some kind of meltdown performance. He needs more international experience to cope with the pressure. Placing third in the short programme there shows that he has the potential.

He's confirmed now for JGP Wuxi, Skate Canada finally updated the remaining entries on the Events page today. If they gave someone a second assignment, they're keeping it.

It was a messy free, he wasn't able to make the CTES minimums with it. But he got good PCS marks for his first major international competition, so the judges do see his potential. He is moving up to Senior domestically after this and isn't Junior eligible after this season. Hopefully he can pull together a good free at Wuxi and set himself up for next season.

I’m very interested to see Gabby come back.. she should do Ontario sectionals I assume and the presuming oh go to Winnipeg for Challenge and then nationals. She looks strong. I’m hoping!
Yes, she'll need to do Sectionals and Challenge to get to Nationals. She met the minimum TES for Challenge in August and she should easily qualify for Challenge. I'm looking forward to seeing her come to Winnipeg (hi :) )

She'll be competing this weekend at Souvenir Georges-Ethier too.

Robert Brodie interviews Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha:

Hello darkness, my old friend …

If you’re any way familiar with the classic Paul Simon-authored hit “The Sound of Silence,” those five words that open the song should resonate with you in a somewhat haunting way. Especially if you’ve ever heard the version recorded back in 2015 by the American metal band Disturbed, you know of what I speak. If you’re like me, it can give you the chills.
(also thank you for recognizing Elladj Balde's Sound of Silence ❤️ )

Bombardier/Mimar's free skate at Souvenir Georges-Ethier (108.62 for the free, 165.17 total):

Much improved from their first competitions, they should get some Challenger assignments.
