2024 Finlandia Trophy: Info and pre-game chat

Finland's evening post TV schedule (Telkku.com) was a on Saturday "Taitoluistelun SM" which means figure skating national championships. I gave them feedback that it is GP, not nationals. Now they have changed it "Taitoluistelun MM" which means figure skating world championships. I gave feedback again, let's see if they bother to fix it.

Well. you are doing better than I have! When ever I try and correct a local TV station about a major "faux Pas" or a plain falsehood they have made about something I actually know something about, they ignore me.....:drama:

Hello everyone, already in Helsinki with colorful circus in tow :)
However I'll need to check tomorrow between practices if I'll be able to throw crowns onto the I've without issues because there's a gap between stands and ice . Another *make it work* moment, let's hope those 20+ planned crowns won't be wasted.
I have also a non-crowns craft for Yuka and Juho...;), we shall see if naughty Beatrice comes out on Sunday to call them to the boards to collect their gifts hehe.
Hope everyone who plans to attend had safe travels!

Telkku.com is sill showing worlds to us. They don't bother to fix it. And hotel receptionist had no clue what competition there is when I checked the route from her because I will walk there. I have walked the route before but it was 6 years ago with less buildings and area looked different. This hotel is only 1,5 km from the Arena. I think local fed needs more help with marketing. Something should be done to get the media interested. I don't know what. Some attraction is needed.

If you throw them frisbee style, I think the distance is doable. :)
I've got two smallish paper bags with support letters and lightweight but fragile gifts inside, so, the common gift bags suggested by the security guy for during the competition don't sound super appealing, but their collision with ice sounds even worse, so it might be my only chance.

Question for the resident Finns, does the country have especially good ties with Czech republic or something? While sightseeing, I noticed an expensive-looking restaurant in a historic building near the Main Railway Station, and its name was Vltava. I wonder why. Or does that mean anything in Finnish? Also, a Scandic hotel offers a Velkopopovicky Kozel beer brand in its menu, which is not a renowned or high quality brand AFAIK, and must be super hard to pronounce... Just interested because I find it curious.

I want to try the Mountain Nepali restaurant recommended by Lyyli tomorrow after pairs as it's so conveniently close to the arena. So far, I was very pleased with Robert's Coffee (or Robert's Cafe, can't recall now). I can recommend that chain to other visitors - it must be a chain as there's at least two downtown.

I hope everyone has a safe competition tomorrow, and for Kazuki and Sota to have redemption skates. 📿

I absolutely cannot wait to see the gifts for Yuka & Juho, as they are favorites of mine as well.

So many fabulous skaters at this event—I’m not surprised to hear that you have 20 crowns at the ready :)

Yes, the line-up is way too good, lots of crowns is a must.
Yeah, be prepared for Sunday, crowns (and not crowns hehe) are planned for 5 pairs and 5 dance teams. Plus of course quite a few for singles.

I’m going to amuse myself by coming up with a list of who I’d personally like to see crowned at this event :)

Should I tell everyone now, or place my list in a sealed envelope to be opened later?

Who wants to join me in this game? We can ask @NoNameFace to pick the winner :)

It's honestly fun idea ;)
I always encourage folks to guess the overall number of crowns and/or guess the recipients...because every event I attend is different, sometimes I can come prepared, but logistics do not work, sometimes I'm prepared but pessimistic about gifting chances, yet everything gets done.
Plus I always wish I did more, but with workdays spent at work, trying to organise my life I some order plus my depressive bouts it's sometimes difficult to do as much as I'd like.

The czech beer was a big thing here back in the days. They were the first “quality” beers that found their way in supermarkets and pubs. Vltava doesn’t mean anything in Finnish, but we use that word as a name for the river that runs through the Prague. Imo the restaurant is medium priced, because it belongs to S-group which is the other big grocery store chain in Finland. The building is indeed historic, over 100 years old jugend style https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vltava_(restaurant)

Edit. Ditto to Robert’s Coffee, I love their coffee!

That's interesting to me, because every GP weekend, I plan two evening meals, one for the hosting nation, and one representing a non-GP host with skaters competing. This week, my guest nation is Czechia - we'll be cheering the speedy Taschlers.

I can't remember ever having seen a Czech restaurant in the UK.

Yesterday there were surprisingly many people in the audience. International crowd, heard many languages spoken there. Lots of wonderful skating and serious training and serious faces but Mai shared a lot of smiles and Piper&Paul were really in good spirits and looked relaxed. Their new costumes were a fun surprise. That RD really takes me to the beach. Camden had a hard fall and was in pain afterwards. I hope he can skate. Nella looked healthy, no hesitation with the jumps, just some failures here and there. I really respect all of these skaters for their hard work in this extremely difficult discipline.

The seating chart promises that there will be a pretty good crowd each day. Saturday is always the most popular day, but many people will be attending today and on Sunday too.

@NoNameFace I probably saw you yesterday after the practices when I was leaving the venue by my bike. I will look you up and come to say hi for sure!

There is a mascot. Pinguin which is named Steppi. I have a guess who she is. If I am right I am a bit surprised. White shoes so it is a she. I noticed a picture somebody wearing similar new looking skates.

I sit here near above the skaters entry. Fd second group is waiting their turn. Juulia and Paul noticed their costumes are almost exactly same colour. Cute.
