2024 CS PGE Warsaw Cup Pairs Short Program

I don't know how it came that Belle became a French surname and not Beau :) Théo Beau would be fun ;)

as many surnames it probably comes from an ancestor nickname, probably a woman known for this feat...or maybe the ancestor in question was involved in the oldest trade in the world

sure but in French, women do not pass down their names. So that's why it's weird.

that's why i said that maybe the Belle in question was probably a working girl

I see what you mean... i just didn't want to see it at first... so the working girl had a son... and tadam. they should skate to moulin rouge then

Roxxxxxanne la Belle. there's also the possibility that in the original village, town, neighborood the mother was better known than the father, so the child was La Belle's son (instead of, i don't know, the smith's son)ooor, magic of the middleages, the woman wasn't particularly attractive, so as a joke she was called Belle (it happened to some french kings)

that is very possible. It's quite common to have names like this in French.. just like Diana Lapierre (the stone) Labelle, Lapointe, Lacoursière, Lachance, Lacasse (like my Étienne) etc etc... there are so many... I never questioned it with the La before because it would refer mostly to a noun and not an adjective.. with the LA, Belle triggered adjective instead of noun...

Told you i am not my usual self this morning... I am Le SLOW

some of these french name might have gotten rid of a De (noble or noble sounding surname). De la Pointe, might mean that the ancestors came from a place called la pointe (the ridge? place of origin is very common in surnames) and who knows, the famous La Chance was a gambler

I probably could have got away with just quoting the first post, but the whole conversation was interesting, so I quoted it all!

Ana and Luke did so great today!
Bronze looks wide open for this competition. Will Dani/Tsi make a comeback? or it might come down to which of the new teams can land their SBS jumps. Looking forward to the free skate!

Really impressed with the debut of Bombardier/Mimar. Great side by sides and throw. The twist is the real weakness that needs serious work, but they managed to do a triple — it just needs more height. My least favourite lift position, the sideways split, but hopefully they can come up with something more aesthetically pleasing as they get more experience under their belts. All in all, that was very promising. If they can land stuff like that they could challenge for the podium at nationals if one of the presumptive top three have a bad day (well, not Deanna and Max, but the other two).

such an interesting sideline! I know of one couple who had their children in the 1980s; the girls took their mother's surname, and the boy took the father's. I'm sure there are plenty more, since the 1960s saw a surge of feminist thinking, even if results were individual.

And we also have a figure skating example: Ilia Malinin took his mother's name, not his father's.

Does anyone have a link to Fiona and Benjamin's programs, or one of them?

@CaroLiza_fan , I really enjoyed your link to Emilea and Vadym; I'm a huge fan of them. :)

Actually, I've just looked again and the individual skates are being uploaded to the 'videos' section of that page. Their short is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aa5oAqQS-WE
The pairs free probably won't be edited until tomorrow, or maybe after the weekend.
