2024-25 Skate Canada Challenge

Bringing back this table now that I got the Nationals byes confirmed:

Nationals ByesAvailable SpotsChallenge EntriesEntries Without ByesNumber That Will Not AdvanceProjected Nationals Entries
Senior Men5131310015?
Senior Women51326251218?
Senior Pairs571106/7?
Senior Ice Dance51055010
Junior Men0182121318
Junior Women01830301218?
Junior Pairs1113304/5?
Junior Ice Dance0152121615

I think if Ariano Kent/Laliberte-Laurent and Schmitz/Eberl are fine to compete at Nationals, they'll be allowed without doing Challenge. But I'm not sure, so the Pairs are a question mark.

So the categories with cut offs are Senior Women, Junior Women, Junior Men and Junior Ice Dance. Everyone else will advance and placements will determine their starting order at Nationals. Should be a good competition for the last spot in the final warm-up group for Senior Women.

Kevin Reynolds is on the technical panel for Junior and Senior Women too. Karen Butcher is on the judging panel for Pairs and Junior Men.

Also Grayson isn't on the entry list. I hope it's nothing that would take him out of Nationals, he had a good start to the season.

And Lulu is not on the start order either for Senior Women :(
And I don’t see Ksenia K. in Junior Girls, as well. Unless, she is staying in Novice Girls for another season? But, she won OCT Junior sectionals…

Does anybody else notice anyone else missing?
I was hoping to see Gabby 😔

Miriam Kleiman is missing for Senior Women too.

I don't think Ksenia would stay in Novice for another season, she'd have a good chance at being on the podium for Juniors this season.

Oh no! Miriam was my Gabby replacement. She looks so similar. So sad. She had a chance to qualify to nationals.

Do you think Lulu and Ksenia might be sent to international events instead and that is why they are missing? Hoping they appear on a list somewhere and then get byes to Nationals 🙏

I just find it weird that our top Junior Girl (fighting with Uliana) and 2nd best Novice girl is not on the list after just recently competing at Sectionals. Surely, Canada would prefer to send Lulu to Junior Worlds after earning the second spot for Canada.

Does Golden Spin or any other upcoming international event, have entries for Juniors and advanced Novice? Crossing my fingers this is the case.

There's no Junior portion for Golden Spin. If they couldn't compete here, I don't think they'd be able to compete next week.

They could qualify for a bye depending on their circumstances:
Extraordinary circumstance  Byes to Skate Canada Challenge, Skate Canada Trophy, or the Canadian Figure Skating Championships at any level may be granted by the High Performance Development Committee in consultation with the Skate Canada President, Skate Canada CEO, Director(s) of High Performance and NextGen, as appropriate. Such Byes will only be granted in extraordinary circumstances where the skater has demonstrated worthiness for a Bye. Such a Bye is extraordinary and will generally be related to medical conditions. In this case, such Byed competitor(s) will be in addition to the designated maximum number of competitors in the relevant Canadian Figure Skating Championships Event. Requests for consideration for a Bye must be made in writing to the Skate Canada CEO and must contain a description of the grounds upon which such Bye is being requested.

So if they were given byes to Nationals, it would be in addition to the 18 entries qualifying out of Challenge for 19 total.

They could still choose Lulu for Junior Worlds depending on what's going on. They sent Gogolev to Junior Worlds in 2020 and 2022 after he withdrew from Nationals.

I just find it suspicious that Lulu/Ksenia are both from the same camp and missing 🤔
Also, Grayson is a contender for Junior Boys Worlds slot, as well….
Hoping there is a justification to their absence. I will miss this trio.

Rose Théroux is not on the list either. Is she done? Have not heard much of her lately.

She's been injured. She competed once in the summer with a watered down jump layout, and withdrew from Quebec sectionals.

Now, Valeria has withdrawn. 3 girls from Canadian Ice Academy have withdrawn, in total. What happened to them?

Only Megan Woodley is left….

It's actually four competitors from them, Miriam Kleiman trains there too. Maybe the flu is going around there?

Let's say they all have a virus, can they really apply for a medical bye ??? I mean that would literally mean an extra flight of competitors at nationals

It wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the competition. If I was a competitor, I would get a “fake” flu just to go direct to Nationals.

But, Lulu is our Junior Worlds defending 10th place athlete. If she can’t compete at Challenge, then no Nationals, and there goes her chances to be selected for Junior Worlds. She has a chance. But, it is not like she was skating exceptionally this season. She was selected over Hetty (National Team member) last season. So, Skate Canada clearly thought she was better than a national team member. I wish our defending Junior Champion would automatically get a bye to Seniors the following season.

I hope the WD’s stop.
Is today the first training session?

I think there'd be a limit to how many medical byes they'd give out. For Lulu, I think she'd likely qualify and I think they'd take into consideration her results this season.

Probably there's a balance between an incentive to not compete while not fit to do so and making sure that it can't be used as a way to qualify for Nationals without having to compete at Challenge.

I remember the year Jeffery Buttle competed at Nationals even though he was not well. He ended up not doing well and didn't get to go to worlds. He probably would have gotten the nod for worlds had he skipped Nationals. After all he had made the GPF and that is where is got sick.
