On that note have a look at his performance of The Spectre at FOI!But Itsuki already said from the start that Shoma won't be there though! So it's not like he's not able to be there in person, he wasn't supposed to be there in person in the first place. The fans who went there knew that and were well informed.Although Shoma was not able to be there in person
I know that already. The entire thing was advertised from the very beginning that Shoma would not be there. Not sure why you're saying that. I had a friend who went and she had told me she was going even though she knew he wouldn't be there. No big secret and no false advertising. He was not able to be there because he had other commitments. No big deal. But Itsuki already said from the start that Shoma won't be there though! So it's not like he's not able to be there in person, he wasn't supposed to be there in person in the first place. The fans who went there knew that and were well informed.
--As a special ambassador, what are the highlights of this year's Japan National Championships?
The All-Japan Championships is, in my opinion, the most nerve-wracking competition of all. Especially for those who are aiming for the top, they have to achieve good results on this stage because they will be sent to the championships after the new year. This is the most nerve-wracking tournament, including the atmosphere at the venue. That is why I think everyone will put their various thoughts and feelings into this competition, as if it were the culmination of the first half of the season. Sometimes there are years when everyone makes no mistakes, and other years when everyone falls. This is especially true for the men's competition.
My favorite athlete is Kazuki Tomono, whom I hope will do his best. We have been together for a long time since our junior days, and Kazuki is a good friend of mine, so I can say this, but he is on the edge, on the verge of going or not, or something like that. I also see him going through a lot of trial and error as he struggles.
Of course, all skaters are the same, and three young skaters (Yuma Kagiyama, Shun Sato, and Kao Miura) have great momentum, but as a fellow skater, I would like to see Kazuki, Sota Yamamoto, and Koshiro Shimada do their best.
In terms of technique, Yuma Kagiyama is one of the best skaters, and Kao Miura definitely has the potential to score the most points among the other members, except Yuma. However, Figure Skating is a difficult sport to perform consistently. This year is the pre-season for the Olympics, and I see that everyone is challenging various things.
I am looking forward to see how each of them will challenge the competition, what kind of tension, what kind of change of mind, what kind of change of feelings they will have, and I am looking forward to see how the older skaters will perform on this All-Japan stage, after their experience so far.
--What kind of feelings did you have before Japan Nationals?
Before Japan Nationals, I often competed in Grand Prix Final, so I had to prepare in a short period of time. It is not often that I am able to compete in Japan Nationals in perfect condition, so I have an image of it as a very difficult competition. I have never said, “Japan Nationals was the best performance of the season,” but I have done the best I could, despite the hardships.
--What do you want the audience to see in the Japan Nationals winners?
If you see the skaters at the venue, you will understand that the matches start with a tremendous sense of tension, as if even the slightest sound could be heard. Thousands of people are watching every movement of their hands and feet, and they perform as if they are in control. This makes the audience tense, and as a sport, it is fun to watch, wondering who will win.
Figure skating is a sport where each individual's personality comes out, so even if you have never seen figure skating before, if you watch the Japan National Championships for the first time, I think it will be easy to understand the appeal of figure skating and its appeal as a sport.
--Do you have a favorite program this season?
Kazuki Tomono's short program “Tshegue” really shows off his talent, and his costumes are great. I want to see what only Kazuki can do, so I think it is my favorite program of this season. Nowadays, people tend to focus on jumps, but programs like that make me happy.
Everyone has their own individuality, but they all try various programs every year, in order not to be all the same, and to develop themselves more. I also had such a program. At first I thought it might be impossible, but at the end of the season, it turned out to be a very good program.
--I think “Bolero” was a case in point.
Yes, “Bolero” was very difficult (laughs). (Laughs.) My other favorite is Koshiro, because I'm closest to Koshiro, so maybe I'm just a fanatic, but I want Koshiro to impress me with his performance at the Japan Nationals competition.
--I hope he can make Mr. Uno cry.
To be honest, I have never been moved to tears by skating, so I hope they can make me cry. I've never been moved to tears before, so I hope to see such a program by the older skaters, since I am so nervous when I am a spectator that I cannot relax.
I think they are all going through a lot of trial and error, so I hope they will do their best, but as a viewer, I also expect them to give a good performance as a culmination of the first half of the season. From what I have heard about all the older competitors, I have a feeling that their competitive lives are not that long, so I am looking forward to seeing as many great performances as possible.

"Yuma is Japan's ace. But figure skaters stand in the rink to give their best performance, and there you are alone. It doesn't matter if you're Japan's ace or not, what you have to do is the same as other skaters. I have thought for a very long time that Yuma is a player who can easily turn those expectations into power, so I am looking forward to his development more and more."
