2024 Japanese National - Men's FS

🤔...maybe if Yuma WDs from Asian Winter Games (then Sota can go instead)
If not, sending Yuma to Universiade in mid~end of January, ASW the week before 4CC, then 4CC too sounds like a recipe for illness and or injury prior to WC

JSF has made poor choices and sometimes greedy decisions in the past but exhausting their top Man before a WC determining number of Oly spots would be absolutely foolish
It could also be that Yuma asked for the schedule to keep himself competition-ready. Worlds 2017 also decided the Oly spots and Shoma had a 4CC - AWG (back-to-back weeks) - Coupe de Printemps schedule as well.

Actually I have tried to check and as far as I can see Yuma is the third - the third - to ever do it worldwide. Unless anyone knows more. Eve if there is, that's pretty august company.
of course, Patrick Chan has done it twice at Canadian Nationals (the first time as early as 2012). He's also done it at 4CC.

I am crying in the hotel room in Osaka. My two most favorites, Sota and Shun, had completely bombed😭That’s not why I traveled long way from Sendai to Osaka.
Yesterday, I blamed the ice, because it was so cold in the venue, but I maybe wrong since it wasn’t not so cold today. What haapped to all boys, except Nobu & Rio?

I am still in shock, but I have to say that I am so happy to witness Nobu’s last national, which I had been thinking I missed forever.
I really feel for you :console:

I remember crying a lot during my drive home after 4CC in 2019 which I attended primarily to see Kazuki, who ended up under-performing

I'm sure Sota and Shun as well as the other boys who had a rough competition sincerely appreciate fans like you who travel a long way just to cheer for them and support them no matter how they perform

At least seeing Nobu give two good performances at his final Nationals was a positive 😊

Please take care of yourself and feel better soon~

Yeah, well if Yuma wants to do a Shoma...more power to him
But considering he was seriously injured only two seasons ago he and his team should decide if that's the wisest choice to make
Seems a bit risky to me but they know what's best for his conditioning so 🤷‍♀️

I know, it's just sometimes what seems to be the JSF choices end up to be the skaters' own decisions, so let's just see. I'm sure Yuma will WD if he feels it's necessary.

Oh my god, I missed the whole event and caught up just now..... what a

(until my little welsh dragon arrived in a pirate ship and doused the fire off )

Wow - looks like an up and down competition. Will be very excited to rewatch it. Congrats to Yuma, Rio and Tatsuya ( I'm so glad I picked you). Nobu - your amazed us all and brought us tears of happiness in the short- can't wait to see the free.

Ok, now for some actual thoughts....

Yuma - when he's on, this program is MARVELOUS. What a masterclass in skating skills and musicality. Love love the StSq and ChSq. But, he needs to be clean(ish) for this program to work. I really really hope he can pull it off in Boston!

Rio - my son is the Japanese senior nats silver medalist 🥹 Amazing redemption from his JGPF free. Now I hope he can build his maturity and mental strength so he can skate like this more consistently. Get that Junior Worlds title, boy!

Kazuki - gosh what a missed, missed opportunity. It was his golden chance to land on the podium and give a middle finger to JSF, but he didn't grasp his chance 😭😭😭 He probably didn't even need quads, if he had opted just for triples and landed them cleanly, he could've edged Tatsuya especially with his SP lead :palmf:

Tatsuya - that being said, congrats Tatsuya for landing on the podium!! What a comeback, from 14th to bronze! I hope he can build a strong international career from now on
Nobu - he's in 4th beating so many much younger skaters :points: He probably didn't have any expectations and just so happy to be skating in Nationals already, hence no pressure or nerves got to him unlike the other guys. So happy to see him do well if this is his last Nationals 🥰

At least you can still see both in smaller competitions and shows in Japan :console: For me, I'm worried that Finlandia was the last international event I saw Sota compete live in. As 10th, he won't even get a Challenger next season... well he might, if he qualifies for the GP series, but I'm not too hopeful, seeing that Kazuki didn't get one this season. What a hell of an event, I will probably just watch Oda and Kazuki.

I haven't had a chance to read through this thread yet, what the heck happened with Shun, nerves or injury?
Apparently he went to the medical room immediately after his free skate and skipped the media interviews because he wasn't feeling well. I don't know anything past that, he could have been sick or maybe injured himself on that opening hard fall or had some sort of injury coming in. I really hope he, Kao, Sota, and Kazuki are doing OK :(

I was so confused when I saw the results and I saw Nobunari Oda on the list and in 4th (!) place. I knew he had planned to compete again in the past, but I had no idea he would be here. What a nice suprise!!

Yuma Kagiyama did so well, easily my favorite free program this season!

But OMG Rio Nakata!! I have never seen him before, so expressive and dynamic as a 16 years old, it comes very naturally to him. His short program is even better! I'm pretty sure he will be future star if he's that good already!

Japan Figure Skating Championships 2024: Kagiyama Yuma makes history by storming to first national title

The Beijing 2022 runner-up throws down a season-best free program score of 205.63 in Osaka to win the Japanese nationals for his first time. With this title, Kagiyama emulates his father Masakazu, becoming only the second father-son duo to win the Japanese nationals.

Kagiyama Yuma won his first national title with a season best free-skate score of 205.68 for a 297.73 total at the Japan Figure Skating Championshipson Saturday (21 December) in Osaka.
Sixteen-year-old Nakata Rio came in second (263.99) to become the first junior skater to reach the men’s singles podium of the senior nationals since none other than Kagiyama, who achieved the feat in 2019.
Tsuboi Tatsuya (247.31) leapfrogged 11 places from the short program to take bronze.
Thirty-seven-year-old and 2008 champion Oda Nobunari ended his career for the second and final time by finishing a respectable fourth (234.68).
Finally prevailing on his seventh try, Beijing 2022 Olympic silver medallist Kagiyama and his father Masakazu - who won three straight championships from 1991 - became only the second father and son to win the Japanese nationals.

Kagiyama Yuma: 'I have to live up to that billing now'

It was a special moment for the Kagiyamas, one that had Masakazu bawling after Yuma’s performance.
“It’s been a while since I last saw my father become emotional to a point of being in tears,” said Yuma, who is the first skater not named Hanyu Yuzuru or Uno Shoma to capture the crown in 13 years.
“I’m obviously happy with myself for fighting to the finish but it means a lot to me to see my coaches be happy.
“He’s not one to cry often, always calm and collected. Not one to show a lot of emotion.
“He watches me more than anyone, every single day in person so it makes me incredibly happy to be able to return the favour this way.
“For him to be in tears, so moved - it really meant a lot to me. I have a feeling this will help me turn a corner, climb the walls I’ve been facing.”
Masakazu, who rarely speaks to the media at competitions, was a proud father on this night as Yuma floored the crowd, opening his skate with a sublime quadruple flip seamlessly followed by a quad Salchow.
“All long, I wanted him to win this title no matter what,” Kagiyama Senior said. “I could only say congratulations to him because I was crying my eyes out. I couldn’t come up with the words. I think I wanted Yuma to win this more than he did.
“Now, he’s finally earned the right to say he wants to be world No. 1. He’d done well, but he had to have this. He’s now ready for a restart.”
The younger Kagiyama echoed his sentiments, eyeing bigger and better things with his whole career ahead of him. Saturday’s victory also punched his ticket to the ISU World Championships in March in Boston.
“It hasn’t completely sunk in that I won the nationals for the first time. I’m just grateful. I’ll keep working hard because I want to win more medals than he has eventually.
“From hereon, I’ll probably be recognised as the Japanese champion more often than not.
“I have to live up to that billing now and can’t embarrass myself out there.”

What an awful Men's competition...not unusual for Japanese Nats 😞

Probably not proper to say but I feel better about the fact that Shun and Kao can feel sad together
That was pretty brutal. And it seemed to be getting worse instead of better as it went on. I was half expecting to hear the "bad ice" excuse, the way everyone was skating.

😭 So sorry! I can imagine you are feeling disappointed, numb. It's hard enough when one of your favorites has a tough outing, let alone both. Feel better soon, please.
:ghug:

I really do not envy JFed having to determine who to send to Worlds with Yuma. I would think if Shun is healthy, he’s on the team based on his Grand Prix season and then the third spot is a toss up between Kazuki, Tatsuya and Kao (again, if healthy) but… not an easy decision at all, especially if Shun and Kao aren’t well. I’d personally send Kazuki and Tatsuya to 4ccs and especially want to see if they can deliver in the short.
