Skaters and coaches among victims in DC plane crash

My skating fandom has become a big part of my life. After this tragedy, I thought I needed to take a break from skating and Golden Skate, and I did - for a little while. Before the disaster, I was excited about European Championships. After, I couldn’t bring myself to watch it.

But the more I thought about how we wished we had more time with those who were lost, the more I became convinced that the lost ones who loved skating so greatly would want everyone to continue to give their love to skating. I’m just a fan who can’t even skate, and all I do is sit on the other side of a computer screen. Nobody knows I’m there. But these people, these artists and athletes, deserve to be seen and appreciated. They want to reach out and draw our eyes their way, touch our hearts, and inspire other human beings they will never know. We never know how many times we will get to see our favorites out there on the ice, and we never know when someone we haven’t seen before will capture our hearts. I want to remember to cherish these precious moments that we have with all the skaters who are still here. So last night I sat down to watch EC replays, starting with the first group.

So take time if you need it, but please find your way back 🙏 ❤️‍🩹
Beautifully said...thank you!

This can’t be helping but I can’t stop.
I am the same way and we are a community and this is our collective pain. What you are doing is bearing witness. It helps immeasurably. This will be part of the long grieving process.

Another interview with Alisa & Misha & Jimmy Ma for CBS News. I was so impressed with how well Misha spoke about the tragedy. I could see him being a team leader after Evan Bates retires.
Unfortunately the volume is so low I can barely make out a word. I can make out the very raw and real pain on Jimmy’s face though.

I keep coming back to this thread. My broken heart hasn't begun to recover.

I've given some thought to why this has hurt our community so deeply. Not to wish this on ANYONE, but I don't think it would affect the sport so much as a whole if it were not figure skating.

I can't think of another sport where the elite competitors, World and National medalists and hopefuls, train in the same facility as developmental skaters, and where they are likely to run across them at various shows and competitions. Even if they train somewhere else, they've probably seen these kids at camps, maybe helped them personally to improve some aspect of their skating. Plus, we're just smaller, and so many people know each other. Heck, we're just internet friends (and real-life strangers, for the most part) who share a passion, and I feel a kinship with you.

The Virginia skaters KNEW those children. The skaters who train in Boston KNEW those children. Other developmental skaters KNEW those children. And I haven't even begun to process the coaches and parents. It's just awful.

This was a big blow for all of us. If posting or coming back to this thread is needed, then come back as often as needed. Let us also remember the survivors and friends and support them as well. An experience like this will change us - some will needs to leave as the pain is too much, others will decide to pick up and support those still skating. Everything happens at its own pace, as one who lost many and sees loss everyday - I know these things take time. Do things to support yourself and continue to support your remaining skaters who are hurting as well.

Though I'm still shoked, I'm finding support with your reciprocal support and solidarity words. Many of you said good and just things.. thank you!
May this be a time to reflect upon our own time, too. As a way to reflect upon our loved ones, our families and friends, in the hope that we would show them always more affection and love. And also, to all the people we love in general, as well as for our beloved skaters.
We must keep their memory alive always, for the love of their families too!

US Figure Skating Tribute Video

Today Show Piece and interview with USFS CEO (2/3/25)
The piece ends with Jimmy Ma saying, "None of us wanna hear music today. But because we have that job we have to. We cannot just let this break us." (the last sentence has resolute emphasis)

For some reason this weekend I kept on coming back here and looking up if there is any more news about the crash. I keep deep down hoping that there will be a miracle of some survivors. Why? How? Who? It is "natural" to look who is to blame. But that doesn't change a thing. 67 lives lost. I will not compare and suggests some lives are more important they all are figure skating or not. Young or not. The lives lost. To see the young skaters skate with such joy. To see the proudful coaches like Genia and Vadim. To hear about the lawyers, beauty queen, moms, dads, union workers, hunters and men and women who serve in the military. May there be a peace. May this tragedy somehow inspire greatness, healing and people pulling together.

Yes, we are making an exception. Verified support funds can be posted in this thread.

US Figure Skating has a verified support fund as well.

I hope it is ok to post the following GoFundMes here too.

Emily Haynos lost her entire immediate family (her parents and brother Cory):

This fundraiser was initiated by Angela Yang's family to cover memorial expenses and to support Angela's siblings:

A support fund to enable Sean Kay's siblings to continue figure skating:

Friends of Brielle Beyer’s family ask for donations to support her father and brother:

A fundraiser to help the family of Olivia Eve Ter and her mother Olesya Taylor cover the funeral costs and provide some financial relief:

This fundraiser seeks to support Sasha Kirsanov's wife Natalya and daughter Nicole (Sasha coached Angela and Sean together with his wife):

My heart goes out to all those who have been affected by this terrible tragedy. 💔
