Mao's return to SOI after IMG re-signs her as a professional skater... considering how scalable Mao's tour is and how she's done 2 nationwide tour, I wonder if an international tour is in the cards for her 👀 at least North America...

If she tours abroad, she has to come to Europe too, so I can go see her! ;) With her newly opened Mao rink, she might want to stay in Japan for now to oversee her business though...

If anything, I think she's more open to tour abroad because her rink is done and it's now operations time. Previously she has to be in Japan most of the time to make sure the construction finished on time and it did.

As per last year, SOI separates the Regular Cast and the Guest Skaters and the second batch of Guests is out, so now the cast is like this:

Guest Skaters usually don't do that much especially since SOI is sandwiched between Worlds and WTT in odd-numbered years, but I really hope they will have a collaboration between Mao Asada and Kaori Sakamoto this year - fellow 3-time Japanese World Champions!

Kazuki Tomono been added to Stars on Ice 2025! And not just as a guest skater, but as a regular cast member! He's the only Japanese regular cast member so far aside from Satoko Miyahara.

Mao is asking her fans on IG to vote for programs they want to see at SOI. She picked two: "Chandelier" by Sia (from Friends on Ice 2024), and "Bolero" (from Everlasting33). So far Bolero is getting the majority voting (over 70%)

Both programs were self-choreographed by Mao, and Bolero was choreo-ed in collaboration with Mao's sister Mai.

A good choice- she's never done Bolero in a normal show-sized and shaped rink, only the stage rink at Tachikawa. Chandelier was done at Shin Yokohama so it's a pretty normal show configuration.

Actually, I voted for Bolero for the same reason. I've seen Mao skated to Bolero during Everlasting33. It was a very powerful skating.
Nice! I've watched Chandelier live during FOI and it's a program that utilizes the usual rectangle shape of ice show rink very well, and a lot of Mao fans already watched that too both live and broadcast. In comparison, Mao's Bolero on an ice show-shaped rink would be a "new" program, because I don't think it can be the exact same with the Everlasting33 version.

Here's an update from Kurt Browning and Alissa Czisny re. the group choreo for the SOI Japan shows - (some of) the Japanese skaters will be involved in a group number too:

Official cm:

Mao Shimada about her admiration for Mao Asada and how she feels about performing in a show with her for the first time :):

Machine translation:

--The off-season is now, but in April you will be performing for the first time with your idol, Mao Asada, in "Stars on Ice."
"I've gotten autographs from her and gone to see ice shows when I was really little, but this is the first time I'm actually meeting her. I got her autograph when I was in second or third grade at elementary school, and I was practicing at a rink in Saitama when Asada was practicing on the rink next door. The people I was practicing with also went to get autographs, so I just blended in with them."
--What memories do you have of Asada's active days?
"I started watching her because of my mother (who was a fan of Asada's), and before I knew it, she became someone I looked up to. I don't remember if I watched the Sochi Olympics in real time, but I have vivid memories of her. I even imitated some of the choreography from 'I Got Rhythm,' and I really love 'Swan Lake,' which I used as a novice.
I love her smile that everyone loves, her ability to keep doing triple axels, and her beautiful skating that's like a ballerina skating on the ice. I need to first reach a level where I can look up to her, but I'd like to get as close as possible."
--How did you feel when you found out you'd be performing together?
"At first I was surprised and happy. She was someone I looked up to and watched on TV, so I was a little scared, or maybe even humbled."
--Is there anything you would like to ask Asada?
"What was her mindset when she kept using her big tricks? I would like to know why she continued to do them. There were times when I thought she could win if she stopped using them, but she always tried regardless, so I'm happy that I automatically feel like we're the same [in this regard], and I would like to ask her about that."

Mao, Dai and Kana are working on a special collaboration number for SOI (it seems like Kana might be choreographing a duet, incorporating ice dance holds, for Mao and Dai - or maybe it's a pas de trois? 🥰):

The promo for the collaboration is very confusing. First, the TBS Stars on Ice account promoted it as a Mao x Dai collaboration, then added that Kana is involved as the choreographer of the collab.

This was just reposted by the SOI account, including the segment that was broadcast on TBS a few days ago, which doesn't show or mention anyone besides the aforementioned three:

🌷🛼6 days to go🛼🌷
🎺Special collaboration realized 😳👏‼️
#MaoAsada and #DaisukeTakahashi perform an SP collaboration number just for #StarsOnIce 💃✨ after 9 years together.

However, in the tv promo with slightly different footage on MBS today, Mao mentioned four people (Dai, Kana, Kazuki and herself) in conjunction with a collaboration (or did she mean that this is the first time that all four of them perform in the same show? :scratch2:)

From the Japanese fans reaction, it seems like the group number will include the four of them, as she says 'the four of us', and it would make no sense to mention his name if it was just being on the same show together. As you know, I love Kazuki, but it's not like he's from the same generation or has the same legend status as the other three! Fans were also surprised Mao calls him 'Kazuki' and not 'Tomono-kun', which implies a certain familiarity, as if they are working directly together.

They are saying that the most likely scenario is that, as the group number started being choreographed, they realised it would look better with a fourth person, and probably reached out to the 'pinch hitter god' as a late addition. This tracks with his reputation of being a quick learner and very adaptable, someone that KanaDai know they can trust ☺️

But yes, it would be nice to have an official announcement!

I agree, but why on earth aren't they promoting it that way? Kazuki is very popular in his own right and this might be another reason for some undecided fans to watch the show. Even if he was a late addition, they obviously knew it at the time of the interview, but for some reason they cut that part out when it first aired on TBS, but kept it in today's slightly different special on MBS, and then even after today's special they still only advertise a duet on their SNS accounts instead of trying to appeal to fans of all the skaters involved. Then again, it's not the first time the SOI promotion has been misleading (I'm inclined to call it self-sabotage)...

On that, I completely agree. Many fans are upset because they said now it's too late to change their schedule/book time off so they could attend the show. Many figure skating fans are adults with jobs/family responsibilities so not easy to adjust plans last minute.

It's also possible that Kazuki's participation is not very big + he's not as famous as Mao and Dai so they thought it wasn't worth it a mention? Which is still bizarre...
