Statement from USFS regarding Dave Lease

I think that the best gloss that cn be put on Leese's ill-timed words would be something like this. Parents should think twice before they take their children out of school, ship them across the country to train with a prestigious coach, mortgage their home to pay for lessons, all in the hope that lightning might strike. Let them have a "normal" childhood, education and social development first.
I think that this kind of statement, though it is more diplomatic, is still patronizing and useless. Most parents know that already. Most parents also know what they want to/can give their children or not.

All this banter does is
1) Make Dave Lease look like a bitter and frustrated human being because of his own lack of success
2) Make coaches unfairly look like crooks always trying to get one more dime from the parents.

I find the latter very insulting, even put in the best of words and context.

My opinion is that
1) Parents are conscious that most kids won't make it a career
2) Most coaches are transparent about all of this.

Coaches who would, as Dave Lease claimed, lure parents and children in all sorts of impossible dreams, wasting them tons of money, would have to face reality pretty quickly. This sort of comment sounds very misinformed to me.

As a person who has a child in sport, coached by our national team coach (yup, I'm bragging) - this is very true for every discipline. When a child doesn't show capability to archieve certain goals or has reached their limit, coaches will simply inform parents about it and show available options if child still wants to train, bc most clubs have pro-trail and amateur-trail. Not every parent is delusional and expects their child to go to the olympics or considers spending money on sports an investment that has to pay off.

Err, given what I understand he has said about Malinin, I would call that sheer self-defence. (He has also lashed out at Yuzuru, Shoma, Nathan Chen... pretty much every top male skater)
Same with Ilia's parents (not sure why) and Boyang (for continuing to skate). If this was the first slip of the tongue, I would give the benefit of the doubt (though the video evidence is now clear to see), but he's done this so many times.

Sad because this channel was very informative in keeping abreast with the news (if one would filter out the gossip/speculation). And I liked Jonathan Beyer and Nolan Carney. And also Maya and Megan when they were on. So sad that I probably won't hear them anytime soon. As for Dave.....

I will miss Maya, but Jonathan was so negative. Yeah, I understand that skating is much less aesthetically pleasing than in the 90s, and yeah, skaters should listen to their music more. But Jonathan reeeeeally went on and on about it.

I think Dave does have an inside in the sport based on all the gossip he knew. Sometimes on TSL, he would enjoy giving the audience bits and pieces of information but always gloating that he knew more than the audience did. Like "naa nana naaanaaa, I know something you don't." I always found that annoying
Yes, but it's also true that Lease lacks responsibility and a genuine moral compass. He revels in gossip and drama. At the same time, there are people in the sport who have tried to look past his character flaws because they see the postive aspects of his knowledge and passion for the sport. And there are also people in the skating community who have used Lease as a convenient tool to feed him information with good and/ or bad intent. Lease has always been a wannabe skating insider. He largely achieved insider access when he befriended Jenny Kirk and they created TSL. It's difficult to figure out what could have possessed Lease to make such awful comments during that recent Patreon episode. He just seems to have a negative, insufferable bent to his personality.

I apologize in advance if my following observations offend anyone. I am definitely not a trained psychologist. But I have been wondering whether Lease may have gotten too caught up in researching info for the initial tributes he did for the lost skaters, and then somehow got their stories mixed up with skaters, parents, and coaches he may have encountered over the years at rinks where he trained as an adult skater. I get the feeling that on some deep level Lease wishes he could have started learning to skate as a young child himself. He may have imagined or dreamed about what it might have been like to be part of a promising skater training camp, and eventually progress to the highest competitive levels and become a member of Team USA. On some unconscious level, was Lease jealous of these young skaters and getting his thoughts all mixed up in his head with the experiences of other young skaters he's tangentially witnessed? No matter what, there's no excusing what Lease said. He has uttered awful things for years as a sly snarky gossip with opinionated takes, that too often have been needlessly harsh and hurtful.

Many fans may dream of what it might be like to skate and to fly free beautifully over the ice. All skaters have dreams, too, and surely it is in large part the sensation of flight which inspires and motivates. The dreaming and the hard work of doing is what learning to skate is all about. Most of all, it is the joys and rewards of the journey itself that truly matter. Medals and elusive Olympic opportunities are only fleeting icing on a cake for those fortunate to partake. Meanwhile, it is the experiences, connections and friendships made on the journey that last forever. Kudos to all the dreamers, to young skaters starting out, to adult skaters, to eligible skaters who try hard and make it big, and to those who don't make it big but are blessed by taking part in the sport and achieving some hard fought goals.

All those skaters, coaches, and parents who died too soon epitomize the skating dream and the skating journey. May their memory always abide with their loved ones and remain within the positive, uplifting heart of the skating community. ❤️🌈

Criticism of athletes performance is part of sports, so fans shouldn't take them as personal attacks
No, no. Lease is a mixed bag of contradictions. He provided constructive commentary on skaters' performances, some of which I agreed with. But far, far too often, Lease crossed the line into negative, hurtful, and overly personal jabs. He consistently seemed to enjoy bashing particular skaters unfairly. There is a difference between fair critical commentary and snarky dislike that edges into personal attacks. I remember very well the unfair personal jabs Lease has made against a number of skaters over the years, whether or not those skaters are favorites of mine.

Well, it's not as if there could never be formed a more positive, newsworthy skating news podcast that offers responsible, uplifting, informative insights, which the aforenamed guest hosts (aside from opera singer, Beyer) could contribute to or be a part of creating.

I always enjoy seeing skaters appear on more mainstream media outlets, which rarely happens in the U.S. That's why I was pleased and enlightened listening to a recent mainstream sports podcast interview with Danny O'Shea. He was interviewed on the Pro Mindset podcast hosted by Craig Domann (a veteran NFL agent, coach, mentor, and entrepreneur). I never heard of Domann previously, but he asked insightful questions which shows he actually possesses astute knowledge about figure skating, which is a rarity among the mainstream sports media. The interview was posted on GS recently but was probably largely missed. It is well worth taking the time to listen to. I will also post it in the U.S. pairs thread.

Danny was asked great questions and he gave thoughtful, articulate responses which shed light on the complexities and give-and-take of pairs partnerships. Danny reveals his thought process and trajectory from initially retiring to unexpectedly and gratefully accepting the chance to renew his competitive career. He gives insights into his and his partner, Ellie Kam's, personalities and their partnership dynamic. Take the time to listen to this positive, informative interview. (BTW, Danny has been one of the skaters Lease has consistently and unfairly taken jabs at, so this interview is a welcome palate cleanser for me). 😊

My problem with DL's comments during that memorial event was I could imagine him having the audacity to speak, if given the chance, at one of the deceased younger skaters' funerals and he just went full out DL and said this kid was never going to amount to anything in skating and we should blame USFS and money sucking coaches. Talk about completely inappropriate. Is he on the autism spectrum? Years ago I stopped even clicking on him, let alone supporting his income for this awfulness. He truly is vile. And his fans remind me of a certain US politician's fans. They know he is vile, but they like the sometimes dry smirk when he goes off. Stop this madness. Don't ever support someone like this with donations or Patreon or clicks to anything involving him.

Yes, just very awful to even think of talking negatively and critically about young, promising skaters whose lives were taken so abruptly, unexpectedly, tragically and shockingly. 🥺😢

It isn't even about talent. It's a given that all of those young skaters were talented or they would not have been at the development camp. They were promising, precocious, and developing. We will never get to see the full blossoming of their promise. The main point is: their lives and their humanity were of great value! They are gone, and their friends and loved ones will miss them forever. 💔

Audacity was on clearance sale apparently because he sure got a load of it.

Okay no. I’m on the autism spectrum myself. I know better than to say that. I’m probably a whole a** decade younger than David and I know you don’t say that.

Just to be clear, I’m not mad at you for mentioning. It’s that I don’t like when people get the wrong idea of certain conditions. Yes, I can be very blunt. But not for stuff like this. I’m blunt when for example I comment a giant computer screen is as big as someone. Not on the death of kids that were living their dreams.

I have watched TSL for a long time, and something about Dave always rubbed me the wrong way. Usually his co-hosts were way better.

That said, no one else really fills the niche at all if TSL goes away. The state of figure skating recaps/reviews/discussion on youtube is dire.

Don't Adam Rippon and Ashley Wagner have a podcast?

There are plenty of podcasts. I’ve never watched/listened to TSL and I’m just fine.

Can you list some? Its hard to find one that isn't some combination of:

A) Massive Stans so blinded by their favs that you really can't enjoy listening unless you agree with their extremely narrow tastes.
B) So critical that they don't even seem to like skating. They just complain constantly. Usually about how the scoring system screws over their fav who should actually be winning everything (see A)
C) Just one person talking. Usually a fan without any real expertise.
D) Not dependable/professional. Sorry, but if you finally discuss events a month after they happen, or if you don't cover most big events, I am not interested.

This may come off as ranty, but I have followed a number of skating YT channels over the years and I have never once been even remotely impressed with the quality compared to what I see for other sports/hobbies.

I'd be interested in a list of options, too. I tried Ashley and Adam's podcast a time or two early on, and wasn't overly impressed, but perhaps they've improved. Sometimes YouTube throws up a recommendation for me, but I haven't found any to be worth the time investment.

You could try this podcast. I listened to it for several weeks and then just drifted away without having anything against it.

Do you know Polina Edmunds' podcasts? I don't know if you'd like her preparation time, but she does avoid your A) B) and C). I couldn't say that I always agree with her, but I remember a fascinating podcast when she invited a Sports Psychology practitioner and faculty (USC) who's also a Figure Skating Judge, and sometimes parts of some of her podcasts:

Ashley & Adam and Not-Olympic Champion Sarah Hughes have improved immensely. I really enjoy their insights as former competitors and their hilarious banter. I listen on the way home from work and am pretty entertained. Since doing more commentary they are now more up to date. It is especially funny during their competition drafts. Ashley had a tendency to doom her picks unintentionally. Amber jokingly texted her to not pick her anymore.
