2025 World Championships Men's Free Skate

My first thought after Ilia skated was "if the others had been on, they could have upset him." I considered that he had popped that lutz, and he had a couple of dodgy landings on other passes.

Then I looked it up... only two other skaters have ever scored 318+ (his winning score here). Yuzuru Hanyu and Nathan Chen at their very best could have given beaten Ilia's imperfect program. No one else. Ever. At least under CoP. I've discounted the slightly different base values and GOE (+3 vs +5 eras - this is close enough to satisfy my curiosity).

We all love our sport, and I like tightly contested competitions. But he really is miles ahead on the scoreboard - at least for now. Can this hold for another year? Time will tell, but I suspect he'll debut some other score grabbing wizardry for the Olympic season. A 4/4 combo does not seem out of the realm of possibilities. So those trying to catch up will need to work even harder.

Ditto. That was astonishing.

I also loved Vladamir Litvintsev from Azerbaijan, who finished 15th... I couldn't look away from that either, for completely different reasons. So oddball, so loveable. I mean who skates to Nutcracker + Carol of the Bells + whatever contemporary pop piece that was? And oddly, it was glorious.

If they gave gold medals for roguish charm, that guy would be an Olympic champion.

This is why i keep telling the worriers not to worry. I’m sure we will hear about it if someone comes along with the tech content to push Ilia. Right now no such person exists

Just watched Torgashev's free skate from my DVR recording and boy it was messy. Like he had too much adrenaline on all the big jumps
 
Just like with the women, I can't explain the energy in the arena, it was so crazy!

The audience was so psyched for Deniss Vasiljevs and Roman Sadovsky. The cheering was so loud!

We were crushed for Andrew Torgashev. We tried to get behind him, but the pressure was a lot.

Jason Brown......we loved him! USFSA needs to send him a bonus or something!

Everyone was worried for Kevin, as much as he is loved, his inconsistency is always on the front of everyone's minds. I heard people gasping at some of his landings. He fought so hard and I'm so happy for his 5th place finish.

Of course, the loudest cheers were for Ilia, and he lit the place up!
 
Adam's boot broke after the first Axel. He's lucky he got off the ice without injury.

“I kind of had flashbacks from last year. I did my best out there. Actually, I have a funny story to share – after my first Axel, one of my boots broke and got soft. In hindsight, I probably should have gone for a Lutz instead of the second Axel, but in the heat of the moment, there was just so much going on in my head."
 
Oh god, I just checked the scores and started watching. Wowww, not what I was expecting.

Poor Yuma. :( Happy he hung on for a medal.

I can't even bring myself to watch Torgashev. I don't want to know.

Wow, Ilia is a freak, but I say that out of total admiration and awe. I will never get over the quad axel. He threw away a whole combination and still scored 318+ and won by 30+ points. What do you even say. Even if they gave him 8's in PCS, he'd be 20 points ahead. If he's intent on doing 7 quads, then he needs to improve his stamina a bit and do more run-throughs. This program is utter trash (it's fun trash though, and I kind of still love it), but he just has a charisma that few can match. I honestly can't wait to see what music choices he's going for next year. I could see him keeping the SP, but I'm not sure if he can top how well he has already skated it. I'd rather see two new programs next year. I wanted to see him skate to Dragonstone from Game of Thrones, so he can embrace his inner blond Targaryen, but it might be too stodgy now. Ilia is more modern and needs something he can lip sync his little heart out to, lol.

Yay for Misha!!! I knew he wasn't skating for just bronze. Prettiest, most stable-looking quads. Only one minor error for the whole competition. Like Ilia, he is bringing something new and brings it to the crowd. I'm very pleased with his silver. I hope he can challenge Ilia more next year. Loved seeing him and Ilia embrace at the end.

Great effort from Adam.

Jason freaking Brown. Take a BOW. Saved US' bacon YET AGAIN! Beautiful, beautiful performance.

I got a kick out of Rafael Arutunian. When Iia came off the ice having hit 6 quads Rafe rushed up all serious to tell him what he did wrong on the Lutz,

I liked Nicholaj Memola's skate. Is he really as thin as he looks on TV, or is he just tall?

I just started to watch and came here to comment how much I love the audience already cheering so well for the first skater! Skaters and teams put in so much work during their competitive years, it's so lovely to feel the support for all of them
 
I still can’t get over how wigged out for Yuma was. And there was no reason for it. Yes Shaidorov was brilliant but he (Yuma) could have gone in thinking “As long as I hit my jumps I can medal on PCS.” It’s not like he’s quadless! He has quads and is a beautiful skater (I don’t usually appreciate the PCS side of things, most people look the same to me with the exception of Jun-who is glorious and Yuma).
 
Congratulations to Ilya, Misha and Yuma .
I truly enjoyed watching the FS.
I am a little disappointed that the judges felt they had to give Ilya higher PCS than Jason.
What Ilya did was an incredible technical feat but lets be real, he was no way better in artistry/components to the glorious, timeless Jason.
Thank you Jason for always bringing me, the live audience and viewers to a different place. You have proved again that you have a solid place in the current world of figure skating

Ilia didn’t get higher PCS than Jason.

PS Jason needs to start making plans for a trip to Italy next February because he just got a ticket to go to his 3rd games and thIs time USFS put him in the team event for another medal.

My concern with Lucas is that he seems to be very injury prone. I'm not sure when he last managed a full season? It is a shame, because he has huge potential. (I have assumed you were talking about Lucas Broussard).
