Two originally unfilled roles have been cast belatedly. The awesome visuals of one of them, the "Dark(ness) Drinking God", played by actor Masachika Ichimura, were published yesterday :

Correction - only one additional role has been cast belatedly (Masachika Ichimura, who will only appear on screen, btw). The other additional cast member, well known (voice) actress Keiko Toda, will lend her voice to the "Iron Goddess", who is portrayed by Shizuka.

Article with comments by Daisuke, Takahisa Masuda, SUGIZO and Yukihiko Tsutsumi:

Daisuke Takahashi, Takahisa Masuda and others show their ‘new sides’ in ‘Hyoen 2025 - Kagamon no Yasha’.
5 Jul 2025 18:54

“Hyoen 2025 - Kagamon no yasha -” opened today, 5 July, at Yokohama Arena, Kanagawa.

'Hyoen' is an ice show combining Japanese culture and figure skating, which took place in 2017, 2019 and last year. This year's “Hyoen - Kagamon no yasha” stars Daisuke Takahashi and Takahisa Masuda, with a script by Takuma Suehara, direction by Yukihiko Tsutsumi and music by SUGIZO.

The story in Hyoen 2025 - Kagamon no Yasha - is based on the legend of Ura, the basis of Momotaro. Takahashi plays the role of Ura, king of the village of Kibi, while Masuda plays the role of Kibitsuhiko, a killing weapon modelled on Momotaro and bred by the Imperial Court with the help of a dark drinking god.

On the occasion of the opening of the show, Takahashi said: 'I will do my best until the last day to show you a new side of myself on this stage. Please look forward to it!" Masuda says: "For me, this will be the first performance since I turned 39 years old. I will live the life of Kibitsuhiko to the fullest. Please give me your best regards!" He expressed his enthusiasm.

The performance lasts approximately 3 hours with an intermission. The show will run until 7 July. The 16:30 performance tomorrow (6 July) will be broadcast live on Nitteleplus Drama/Anime/Music Live. Full comments from Takahashi and Masuda, and comments from SUGIZO and Tsutsumi are as follows.

Daisuke Takahashi's comment

The curtain has finally risen on ‘Hyoen 2025 - Kagamon no yasha’. I feel great joy and responsibility in being able to express a story rooted in the legend of Ura in Okayama while overlapping it with my own roots. Last year, I actually visited Kinojo Castle and felt the weight of history firsthand, and that experience is deeply embedded in my acting and feelings today.

I am more than happy to be able to create this magnificent story together with my co-star Takahisa Masuda and all the other wonderful skaters and actors. I would also like to share with the audience the time to think and feel deeply about the universal themes of “evil” and “great cause”, accompanied by the world spun out by SUGIZO's music. I will give it my all until the final day so that I can show you a new side of myself on this stage. Please look forward to it!

Takahisa Masuda's comment

At last, ‘Hyoen’ has started today!
I was surrounded by wonderful members and practiced a lot, a lot, a lot (← referencing a triple axel) on the warm, crisp ice.
This is my first stage performance since turning 39. I will live the life of Kibitsuhiko to the fullest.
I look forward to seeing you!

SUGIZO's comment

Finally, the curtain has opened on Hyoen 2025 - Kagamon no Yasha. I am truly honoured to be able to participate in this play as a composer and performer.

This is a long-awaited collaboration with director Yukihiko Tsutsumi, which has been over 25 years in the making. I am convinced that the fusion of the one and only Tsutsumi World, top figure skating athletes, wonderful actors and my music will create a chemical reaction beyond imagination. I hope that many people will experience this new rock opera, which sublimates the profound beauty of Japanese culture and the beauty of art on ice in the most exquisite way. Please look forward to this production in which we will put our whole heart and soul into it!

Yukihiko Tsutsumi's comment

First day! I'm freed from the production seat on the ice, which I arbitrarily called "Iceland." Over the past few weeks, I've seen "Hyoen" in Niigata, Chiba, Yokohama, and other places [during the rehearsals], and it's been a series of miraculous scenes! The top skaters' F1-level speed, the beauty of the actors illuminated by the ice, SUGIZO who turns music into magic like an opera, and the staff who exceed the limits in every sense! Team Hyoen is awesome! Please look forward to it!

There are a couple of wide-angle shots in the accompanying gallery that convey an impression of the stage design and lighting :

Deep Edge Plus and World Figure Skating photo reports:

Machine translation of the Deep Edge Plus article:

Daisuke Takahashi's Hyoen opens, starring alongside NEWS' Takahisa Masuda, with intense sword fighting on the ice.
Former world figure skating champion Daisuke Takahashi appeared on the opening day of the ice show "Hyoen 2025 - Kagamon no Yasha" at Yokohama Arena in Yokohama on the 5th. In a double starring role with Takahisa Masuda of the popular group "NEWS", in addition to lines and live singing, he also performed sword fighting and hanging in the air in the battle scenes.
The story is based on the legend of Ura, which is the basis of the folk tale Momotaro from Takahashi's home prefecture of Okayama, with Takahashi playing Ura, a young prince of the Shirakiri tribe who becomes a demon, and Masuda playing Kibitsuhiko, a killing weapon created by the Imperial Court. The production was directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi.
Mr Takahashi passionately played the role of Ura, a kind-hearted young man who gradually loses his humanity after a conflict with the Imperial Court.
Actress Misato Morita, who plays Ura's fiancée “Azohime”, is an experienced figure skater who started figure skating at the age of four. In a scene where she and Takahashi skated together, they expressed their love for each other with their smooth and breathtaking skating.
Shizuka Arakawa, Kana Muramoto, Keiji Tanaka and Koshiro Shimada (Kinoshita Group) also perform.
Ms Arakawa, who had appeared in three previous productions of “Hyoen”, played the role of the “Iron Goddess”, the guardian goddess of the White Fog Tribe. Like Mr Takahashi, she also performed intense sword fights and suspension acts, embodying a bewitching and majestic goddess.
Ms Muramoto played the role of “Yū”, a praying woman of the Shirakiri tribe. She did not deliver any lines, but glided gracefully with her costumes fluttering in the air, adding a soothing presence to a story in which good and evil are reversed.
Tanaka as Sasa Morihiko no Mikoto, Momotaro's monkey, and Shimada as Inukai Takeru no Mikoto, the dog, with actor Takuma Zaiki as Tome Tamaomi no Mikoto, the pheasant, gave a good performance in the speedy action scenes. The three, who are Kibitsuhiko's caretakers, drew laughter from the audience with their comical interactions, directed by Tsutsumi-san.
SUGIZO of the rock band LUNA SEA, who created the music, played the guitar and violin live on stage. For the curtain call, he put on his skates and circled the ice with the performers.
The show will run until 7 July.

A lovely post by Takuma Suehara, who wrote the script 🫶:

Hyoen ~Kagamon no Yasha~
The first day of the show opened yesterday. As I gazed at the packed Yokohama Arena, I reflected on the long road that has led me to this point since I was allowed to take part in this performance, and I was moved by the sheer magnitude of Hyoen, which has been built up by the countless people who have been involved and put their hearts and souls into it.
After the first day, today is the second day. The middle day. It is also the day before the final performance. It is fleeting, like ice, as it is born and then disappears in an instant, which is why I feel that time is so precious.
I hope you enjoy today too.
[In the last part he is also thoughtfully reminding the audience to bring jackets as there are parts of the arena that can be a little chilly due to the air conditioning.]
Print article in today's Nikkansports:

Thanks syns for posting all the Hyoen goodies, much appreciated ❤️. It looks to be a fabulous production!

Thanks syns for posting all the Hyoen goodies, much appreciated ❤️. It looks to be a fabulous production!

After watching the live broadcast, I can confirm that it indeed was an impressive production with an epic story, stunning visuals, great music by SUGIZO (as promised he created a proper rock opera - so heavy music loving me was truly happy!) and a couple of standout performances!

Dai has surpassed himself in terms of acting - showing completely new facets we haven't seen from him before as Ura slowly descends into madness culminating in his transformation into a "demon". He was truly terryfying in the final showdown! He also has to handle a bigger amount of speaking lines than in any of the previous Hyoen productions and does so convincingly while using several distinct voices to express the different emotional states and stages of his character. This time there is absolutely no doubt that he is the star of the show (as there were complaints re. last year's production) - even if it was advertised as a co-starring role with Takahisa* (and looking at the packed Yokohama arena it's obvious why that pr strategy was a genius move). That's not to say that Takahisa wasn't impressive - he was! The level of skating proficiency he displayed is the best we've ever seen from an actor/singer (without previous skating experience) across all Hyoen productions (with Seiji being a close second) and his solo song in the second act was powerful and deeply emotional (in the first act I thought that his voice wasn't entirely there, but he blew me away with his performance in the second act). Dai's singing was also very good - he firmly held his own in his duets with Takahisa and Ryota.

* Dai is also receiving an overwhelming amount of praise from Takahisa's fans (many of which have been attending an ice show for the first time) on social media. 🥹

Other standouts to me were Eisaku Yoshida as the Shadow Emperor, Takuma Zaiki as Tome Tamaomi and Ryota Aoyama as Senshū. Keiji and Koshiro did a great job too and played off each other and Takuma Zaiki very well. Misato was lovely as Azohime.

Shizuka and especially Kana, who both didn't have any speaking lines (the Iron Goddess had lines, but was not voiced by Shizuka herself), were underutilized, imo.

I loved SUGIZO's live guitar and violin playing throughout the show as it added a lot to the atmosphere (he also looked bada*s! 😎)

Also, now I see what people mean by Yukihiko Tsutsumi's unique style of direction. Even though the show has many elements in common with previous productions like Basara and The tale of Genji (there even was a Genji reference as they briefly reused one of the musical themes from "Like the moonlight"), the feel was pretty different - darker and more intense, maybe even weird in parts (in a good way!)

The story was quite complex and due to its heavy reliance on dialogue hard to follow for a non-Japanese speaker - therefore I am immensely grateful to this English speaking fan, who attended the show in person and provided the detailed synopsis from the official program brochure :thank::

There are reports that three-time Olympic champion judoka Tadahiro Nomura (who reported from the Pyeongchang and Rio Olympics for Fuji tv with Daisuke) and two-time Olympic silver medalist fencer Yuki Ota, were in the audience at the first show. 😊

Here's a commemorative backstage photo of Tadahiro and Yuki with Dai (three Olympic medalists from entirely different sports!):

I went to see Daisuke Takahashi's "Hyoen 2025". It's actually my first time watching Daisuke's ice show, for some reason. I knew he was a good skater, but his heartfelt performance and singing were truly wonderful, and the grand story, direction, and collaboration with the luxurious cast were very impressive. In the show, he was a professional skater and actor, but the Daisuke I met after the performance was just the same as always. Haha, thank you, Yuki, for accompanying me.

Takuro Ohno, Marie and Eliana, who appeared in Hyoen and became friends with several cast members last year were in the audience today and took a photo with all of last year's Hyoen members (sans Shizuka, so her character photo was edited in) :love2:. (Edited to add: Why did I overlook Kazuki in the middle there? 😳 So he came straight from the National training camp to watch his friends perform! 😊) From Takuro's twitter account:

Everyone was wonderful.
It was fantastic.
It was exhilarating.
I carry that blessing of standing on the ice with everyone at Yokohama Arena a year ago in my heart as my daily motivation.
Tomorrow is the dress rehearsal at the theatre. I'll do my best! *

*[Takuro is going to appear in a theater play called "The Sea and the Parasol" in Tokyo from July 9 to July 21]

Mao-chan watched one of today's shows from one of the vip lounges :love2::

A one-of-a-kind piece of entertainment that goes beyond the boundaries of an ice show!
Dai-chan has really evolved and his acting and singing are amazing!
All the other performers were also amazing!
It was spectacular!
This is so lovely! 🥰 Last year she couldn't come because Hyoen overlapped with her own "Everlasting33" (after the conclusion of Hyoen, Dai, Kana and a couple of other cast members went to watch Mao's show, though), but I remember she also attended one of the performances of "The tale of Genji" in 2019.

Now I want her to join the Hyoen cast next time to keep her promise from 2016 when Dai asked her, if she would join forces with him for a new kind of theatrical ice show. Let her be the heroine! 🤩

"Medalist" voice actress and official "Kassouya" cheerleader/announcer Natsumi Haruse also attended one of the shows 😊:

And the last performance is already over. I am always impressed by the hard work and passion that is put into these productions during the long preparation and rehearsal process, just for the actual performances to be over so quickly. 😭

According to several fans Dai-chan's family attended the last performance. They must be so proud! 🥰🥹

His voice was hoarse and his cheeks were bald during the final greeting, it was truly amazing 👏👏👏Did you see the face of your father, the number one fan in the world, who supported Dai-chan last night in the second part of the show? [Dai during the final speech:] "I'm trying my best to change the tone of my voice between the first and second halves. I'll check it again on TV when I get home" 😭😭He also told us the origin of Ura. 🙇‍♀️
