WHAT!? WTF! Grishin was literally the best commentator we had in skating. His voice is ICONIC. How in the world am I even supposed to watch now? He was SO positive! Like overwhelmingly positive. A skater could fall 3x and he would say something nice. The juniors who didnt have quads and were just there for fun skating basic programs he would still point out how passionate they are and what the program is about and what it means. This guy genuinely loved skating and made Russian events feel unique in how positive and genuine the atmosphere is... Almost every other commentator is always pretentiously critiquing everything, commentating on girl's bodies, condescendingly disappointed in some small mistakes, etc... or otherwise just totally monotone and corporate. Grishin always had fun facts about the skater's personalities, hobbies, and helped us get to know them better. Literally such a unique commentator. Completely irreplaceable. This actually makes me so sad wtf. I could keep typing forever about how much I love Grishin I've said it many times before in tournament threads how much I appreciate his uplifting tone and personality. This could genuinely just ruin Russian tournaments if we get an awful commentator now. Shcherbakova and Kolyada are good but without Grishin its still not going to work. That is going to take someone really special to replace that job. Unbelievable. Always some terrible news waiting for us in this world!!! Insane!!!

That's tragic news. He was a wonderful commentator and of my generation so it was easy to understand all his references. He contributed a cultured voice and balanced assessments. He was never toxic and managed to stem the flow of toxicity that the other older commentators provided before the new generation of the athletes joined him. I will truly miss Grishin on channel 1 broadcasts. I hope there is a memorial for him this season from the Russian fs community. The successor will have big shoes to fill, for sure. RIP.

Still in shock after hearing this, having watched the Domestic Russian competitions over the last few years, I have gotten used to hearing his voice, always the leader. Such a terrible tragedy and still young. My heart goes out to all that knew him :frown:

Wow. This is a real shock.

For many of us, Alexander Grishin was the voice of Russian skating.

Even if you don't understand the language, you can often tell when somebody is being snarky or overly critical. I never got that feeling from Grishin. He always gave me the impression of being a fair commentator. So it is good to hear people that did understand him saying that he was.

We as skating fans are going to feel his loss. But losing him unexpectedly at a relatively young age is going to be so hard for his family to come to terms with. Especially with it happening so soon after the arrival of his son.

I hope they can find comfort from knowing how much he was loved by so many people around the world.

My thoughts are with his family, friends, and fans.

Such sad and unexpected news, I couldn't believe it when I read this. So young and having his life ending in such a senseless way without warning :(

I've seen many competitions with Alexander Grishin's commentary, and interviews by him, and though I don't speak Russian, I appreciated him very much. He had a very appealing and soothing voice, and always came across as supporting and positive. Above all, he seemed a nice and honest person.

I'm truly sad for him and his family and loved ones. I saw from the article he was married and had a small son. Rest in peace Alexander, I hope he will be fondly remembered, and much strength to his wife and close family in such terrible moments.

I first learned about this from a dear Russian friend... she is still inconsolable as his voice is a big part of her earliest memories of following the sport. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. He was a great commentator in all the skates I watched with him on the mic.

I am deeply devastated and crying for the second day, as if I had lost a friend. I never thought that I would miss him so much, that with him gone, figure skating would never be the same for me. How warm and respectful he was in commenting on all the competitions, even if little kids were competing. No one else has achieved that level of broadcasting unconditional support and warmth of heart for every athlete regardless of the result. He was a sincere fan of all, even the most inconspicuous regional skaters, he saw something interesting and original in everyone, praised them, tried to make the public love them and notice them, not bored waiting for the leaders to skate.
Of course, he will be replaced. We don't have people who can't be replaced. But that's a quality he's unlikely to have in those who come to replace him.
My condolences to his widow, who is left alone with a small child. It is impossible to imagine what she is going through now, what hell she is in.

Sleep well, old friend. We will often remember you

So very tragic. Condolences to his family and friends.

It might be important to mention that today his wife posted a video with toxicology reports dispelling malicious rumours from some Russian media that he was inebriated at the time of the incident. It is a common trope with such accidents which does not apply to Grishin despite speculations.

I completely agree. He's irreplacable and we can only dread what is coming now...
