2025-26 British and Irish figure skating

I might be missing the obvious, but why is Soloman Williamson being listed as Sidney Dennis Williamson? I was expecting a sibling that I didn't know about, but it was definitely Soloman himself.

My guess is that "Solomon" is a nickname that he picked up at school (perhaps he is very wise), and since then it has become the name that he is universally known by. But, because this is an international event, the ISU wanted his name as it is written on his passport.

I have to admit, it did confuse me when the announcer said a totally different name to what was on the entry list.

He's always been listed as Solomon on entries and lists in the past?

But as far as I know this is his first international at Junior level.

Solomon competed at Advanced Novice level at the Tayside Trophy in 2021, but it is only in the past season or so that the ISU have started creating ISU Bios for Advanced Novice skaters. They didn't pay any attention to them before that.

I suppose the British Fed were happy enough to use the name he is normally known by. But the ISU isn't.

And if that is the case, it is a bit rich, given that the ISU accept the name "Kai Kovář" for Karel Kovář Junior.

Are his family Jewish? My Jewish neighbours gave each of their now-adult children a Hebrew name and a "secular" name, and their grandchildren are being given two different names now also. In one case they're translations of the same name in different languages, and two of them have names that don't mean the same but have the same initials.

Does anyone know why Nina Povey WD from RC cup? I am really hoping she isn't injured. It would be a bit concerning if both she and Kristen were going to be out for a while.

@CaroLiza_fan what is involved in starting/running a fan fest? I don't think Alice Smith has one, and she probably deserves to.

Now that is a question!

When initially setting it up, it involves a lot of research.

Firstly, finding out the basic personal information about the skater for the introductory sentence. Easy if they have an ISU Bio, difficult if they don't. Fortunately, Alice does (https://results.isu.org/bios/isufs00118663.htm).

Secondly, linking to all their various skating bios. You would not believe how many databases of skaters are springing up! (A side-effect of the ISU not having a public database). In the template I use for my Fan Fests, it has grown from originally being around 4 sites to now being 14 sites! But, don't worry, it is very rare for a skater to be on all of the sites.

The next part is adding in social media links. This is where you have to use judgement, because there are privacy issues. For younger skaters, I tend to only include links to Instagram. For older skaters, I add in others. I tend not to include Facebook profiles, as I have always thought of it as a site primarily for keeping in touch with people you actually know in real life. A thing I have found recently is that there is an increasing number of skaters on LinkedIn, which surprised me.

Next is possibly the most frustrating part. Listing the music the skater has used each season. Often, this is only possible for the seasons since they got an ISU Bio, as you can put the link into the Wayback Machine and check old versions of it. (I should have added, when using the Wayback Machine, it is better putting in the address for the old non-secure ISU Bio, which in Alice's case would be http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00118663.htm . You get more captures than if you put in the new secure ISU Bio address, such as the one that I provided earlier in this post). But for seasons before they had an ISU Bio, it is mostly a case of watching videos and seeing if you recognise the music.

The main body of the post is finding out all the past results of the skater, and bringing them all together into a table. This can be particularly difficult when it comes to domestic competitions, as the Entries / Results pages often disappear. But, fortunately, the British competitions do tend to stay up. Norwegian database Rink Results is a god-send for finding out where skaters competed, and it even has the scores already laid out in a table. The drawback is that it doesn't link to the original Entries / Results pages, so you have to find them yourself. Skating Scores is a good backup for finding competitions that Rink Results may have missed, but you can't copy and paste from that site.

Finally, providing links to programme videos. Unfortunately in this case, Alice Smith is a very common name! But, this is the fun part, as it is facinating when you find really old videos from when the skaters were really young. A tip - use the filter button to sort the videos by upload date.

After you have the thread posted, it is just a case of adding new information in as the season goes on.

I tend to use a lot of tables in my Fan Fests. However, you may prefer to have some of the sections as lists rather than tables. To be honest, it might be better having fewer tables, because tables have become harder to work with since the last update to XenForo.

Oh, I nearly forgot. The most important bit of advice - make out the Fan Fest in a Word document, and then paste it into the forum using "What You See Is What You Get" mode. Makes everything so much easier. Having to make out a Fan Fest from scratch in the forum itself would terrify me!

Well, that is my advice. I hope it hasn't scared you off.

If you need any more help, please don't hesitate to contact me.

All the best!

If there is one, a wikipedia page can be very helpful even if you have to check the information.

Unfortunately, Alice doesn't.

To be honest, I don't use Wikipedia as much as I used to. Over the past year or so, there has been a new editor who has been rolling out a new format to the figure skating pages. And I don't like the new format. I find it a lot harder to use than the old format. And as a result, I have pretty much given up on Wikipedia for finding out stuff related to figure skating.

I still use Wikipedia for finding out about other things. Just not figure skating.

One of the volunteers said yesterday that it was due to a migraine and so it wasn't safe for her to skate.

Actually really impressed with Louis Gregory, I thought he and Ashlie looked good together and Ted and Mark were right - he has some swagger

They were less than 3 marks off jr world minimums. Lots of potential so fingers crossed for them.

Great week of GBR competition all round, all the JGP competitors in the top 10, Alice landed a 3-3 (with a q but still, on her feet!), some lovely comments from Ted, Lloyd landed a 3A and got credit for a 4T despite falling, multiple junior pairs teams competing at different competitions... I'm looking forward to seeing how the season progresses!

Also nice to hear Ted and Mark's enthusiasm for the quality of skating of Neamh Davison and Daniel Borisov (at Ankara JGP) today.

I agree, I think they skate beautifully and have loads of potential.

Just stumbled across this interesting radio interview with Ed Appleby - it's from March 2024 and he talks about his goals, including the Milan Olympics

Fingers crossed for Chinese Nebelhorn!

Is it correct that he will be able to go because GB have or are likely to qualify for the team event? I hope he can get an individual spot either way.

I'm not sure. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will be able to answer this question. I hope he can get a spot, too. He was listed for the Robin Cousins Cup, then delisted - I hope this meant that he was concentrating his energies on training for the Chinese Nebelhorn.

Just catching up on JGP Ankara, some good progress I think for both teams.

I guess Neamh and Daniel will be senior next year as she is 21? They've got a bit to do if they want to be getting mins for that extra Euros spot that will hopefully be there but I hope they can get there. They look good together.

Countries who qualify in at least 3 or the 4 disciplines can participate in the team event if they are ranked within the top ten eligible countries. There are five spots available in total for countries which have only qualified in three disciplines to add their 'missing' skater. These can only be used for the team event. Priority is given to the Olympic hosts (not relevant as Italy have already qualified skaters in all four) and the spots are then distributed based on the country's ranking. At the moment, there seem to be quite a lot of countries which have only qualified 3/4 disciplines. If more than five of these countries qualify for the team event, the lower ranked ones will not be able to add a skater and would need to compete in the team event with one discipline missing. Therefore, even if we do qualify for the team event (which is not certain) it is not guaranteed that Ed would be able to compete unless he qualifies a spot for men's singles in Beijing.
