Caroline Zhang and others might do the Biellmann spin better than Biellmann herself did it, but who is the skill named after?

For any skills named after skaters, there would be a historical moment at which figure skating audiances/fans had begun to realize the beauty or awe of the skills/positions. Biellmann is not the one who invented the skill, but she might have lighted up the skill and made the audience impressed during her career.

No reason to blame someone for calling it Yuna spin. Yuna has used the skill since she was in Junior, indeed in a unique way.

Could we please stay on the topic of pretty photos and practice discussion, please?

ETA: It wasn't aimed at you, shine. :) Yukina had indeed a great camel spin. I loved the one she did in "Picasso's Dance" SP.

I've heard a rumour that CD will be closed to the public. Has anyone heard something about that, or for that matter seen any dance teams practicing?

Once again, somebody had to bring up nationalities. :rolleye:

You guys hate Yu-Na and Korea, we get it. Geez, you don't have to bring out the hate in every single topic. (BTW, that was meant to be a little tongue in cheek, so don't take it literally.)

Ooh, informative...thanks!

I think it's also important who does the element best and the closest to its currently accepted definition. Like, Bobek might have been the first to perform the skid spiral, but maybe she performed it poorly or it was unfinished or it didn't resemble what the definition of the element currently is. In that case, I can see why some would claim the spiral as Sasha's. Someone mentioned a Swiss skater who had been doing the pearl spin before Caroline and provided a link to the skater performing it in competition - in short, the spin looked nothing like how Caroline performs it, although you can see why some would say the Swiss skater planted the seed of the element first.

Interestingly, the pearl spin isn't even named after Caroline - it isn't known as the "Caroline Zhang" spin or anything. :) I'd love to see the Korean skater who supposedly did the pearl first, and see how closely it resembles Caroline's.

putting Nicole's skating up against Sasha's - or at least their flexibility, I don't think there's that much difference, especially on the skid spiral.

In Yu-Na's case, it is amply clear she wasn't the one who did the lay-over camel first, as others have pointed out other high-profile skaters who were doing the skill before her.

So, you mean that the lay-over camel has no name after a skater yet? Then, what would be the matter if figure skating fans themselves started calling it Yuna spin? Or, you personally don't like Yuna to have her name on a skill?

I think Mao prerotates too much on all of her jumps, especially her 3A.
I wonder that could be called "triple" axel:scratch:

I have no idea if the lay-over camel is named after anybody. Read what I've said in previous posts. And bear in mind I'm not talking about what FS fans call the element, but what the element is officially known as. FWIW, I don't recall anyone ever calling a lay-over camel a "Yu-Na", so perhaps it is only known as such by a certain group of fans.

I'd be fine with the lay-over being named the "Yu-Na" if it is confirmed she was the first to do it in competition, and the manner in which she performs it is the closest to the element's currently accepted definition. However, in this thread, others have already pointed out well-known skaters such as Bobek and Chouinard who were doing the lay-over camel well before Yu-Na did. It remains to be seen how well they performed the element.

That's a big hint, people! Please provide some YouTube links!

:disagree::sheesh::scowl::banging:

How did a practice session about Mao turning into a Yu-na/Mao fight??

What's Mao's underrotation and prerotation got to do with Yu-Na?
Unlike someone, Yu-Na doesn't have to worry about underrotation or prerotation;)
