2025 Skate to Milano is an ISU Olympic Winter Games Figure Skating Qualifying event and is set to take place Sep 19-21, 2025, in Beijing, China. The event will feature the singles, pairs and ice dance disciplines in the senior categories.

This event provides nations with a final chance to claim berths for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, particularly if they were unable to secure sufficient entries at the 2025 World Championships.

National federations may enter skaters in the Olympic Qualifying Competition if they meet specific conditions:

• The country did not secure any Olympic spots in a particular discipline at the World Championships.
• The country earned enough placement points at Worlds to qualify for two or three Olympic spots in a discipline, but not enough skaters or teams advanced to the free skate to confirm those spots. In this case, the federation may send one additional athlete or team to the Qualifying Competition in an attempt to secure the second or third spot. However, this skater or team must not have advanced to the free program at the World Championships.

The number of Olympic berths available at the Qualifying Competition is limited as follows:

• Men: 5 spots
• Women: 5 spots
• Pairs: 3 spots
• Ice Dance: 4 spots

At this event, each country may secure only one spot per discipline. The countries with the best placements will claim the available quotas until all spots are filled.

If any country that originally earned a place at the World Championships decides not to use it, that position will be added to the pool at the Qualifying Competition. Similarly, if a nation with multiple entries at Worlds loses spots due to its skaters’ results, those unused places will also be reassigned at this qualifying event.

The event will be conducted in accordance with the ISU Constitution and General Regulations, the ISU Special Regulations for Singes & Pairs Skating and Ice Dance, and relevant ISU Communications.

Not totally new, it's just been a very long time (like probably over 2 decades) since the Nebelhorn Trophy was not the Olympic qualifier. The ISU has discussed the separation of the two events (Challenger and Qualifier) for organisational ease for a while, and actually implemented it this time around.

So they need to have 3/4 spots qualified for the Olympics. And one discipline can come for the team event and only the team event. China already had a man qualify for the Olympics from Worlds 2025. So they don't need to worry about their dance team getting that spot...unless they want to really make the individual event. Which of course they do.

I’m still dying over the fact that basically everyone besides the ISU (including Ted, Mark, fans, social media, and most of the FS news outlets - Jackie Wong, Anything GOEs, Skating Scores, even @gsk8 Twitter) is in some capacity referring to the event as “Chinese Nebelhorn”

I haven't. I've just been referring to it as the "Olympic Qualifying Event".

The other names that people are using ("Chinese Nebelhorn", and the actual name of the event, "Skate To Milano") are confusing because they refer to places other than the place where the event is being held.

Well I said basically everyone .

I believe it’s been unofficially called that for a while actually, since the ISU named the event a while after they announced it.

But I’ve mostly seen it on other platforms and less so here. Everywhere else it’s been really only the ISU that’s been calling it by it’s actual name.

Yup that's what happened. ISU didn't give it a name so the internet baptized it Chinese Nebelhorn.

I've been hearing that the scores from this competition won't count as ISU SB or PB since it's not a GP, Challenger or Championships - but I saw that many skaters' ISU bio has been updated with SB and PB from this comp already:

Seeing just a few performances here and there...

Congratulations to all medalists and qualified athletes! As well as congratulations to all skaters who had great skate! It was pleasure to watch.

To those who didn't have the best day...don't be sad for too long. There are many shining days in front of you, no matter if in figure skating or other areas of your life. Continue to never give up.

I guess that they changed it on the ISU bios is a good indication it´s counting? Did it ever happen that they updated a score there and later removed it?

Another thing that is interesting - if we can conclude that it counts towards SB/PB, it probably means the scores also count towards alternate list for GP? In that case there is some names that should be updated soon - Stefania Yakoleva and Ruiyang Chang would potentially put themselves high on the replacement list now? Will be interesting to see if those documents will be updated anytime soon.

Mia didn´t make the top 75 cut last season and was never on that list because of that, but as I recall it, skaters who were top 8 or something at Challengers got their scores on that list, so it will be interesting to see if she appears somewhere on the bottom of that list.

i doubt it. This is not on the challenger series, and I believe only scores received at challenger events can lead to updates on the replacement list

I agree it should not count, but since it wasn´t supposed to count for SB/PB either I would not be surprised if the scores ended up being updated and count as well for the alternate list, even though it´s not a Challenger. We have seen a lot of strange things happen with those list Also if the SB/PB will count from this event it also means it could impact the GP selection next season again

Some skaters are already celebrating their new PBs so I would think they are not wrong.
