2025 Grand Prix de France Pairs Free Skate

A bit surprised to see Riku answering the questions because I know Ryuichi can speak English. However, he did seem a little exhausted, in which case I can understand declining the questions.

Can I just say one more thing before I go write my rant: so there is this Korean version of Donizetti's opera Rita, a song from which went viral (the lyrics were translated hilariously well), and if anybody uses that song or Rita in general I will stan for their whole career. Song in question: https://m.youtube.com/shorts/aVGM_hP9mPw

@4everchan and @elektra blue I'm tagging because the video is short and definitely worth a watch

I am perplexed with Deanna and Max. Every team has a bad skate but it bothers me that there doesn't seem to be a lot of camraderie,"I'm here for you" vibes. I'd like to see them a bit more supportive of each other.
Well.. they were VERY disappointed. Max said " we just need to skate more together". And I think that's a fair assessment and goes in the "team work" category of comment. I mean, this is one of the teams with the best twist and lifts in the world. Usually easy points for them. I do not remember ever seeing them making major mistakes on two of those elements in the same competition. Yet, it happened here. So, of course they are confused and in their head first... I think they are fine.

She is not that young, there is probably so much training she can handle, and it takes longer to recover. Maybe it's good that it happened here, they still have time to work it out.

The Georgians are coming into this season so strong and improved, even managing to beat the Germans in their last event. Deanna and Max really could not afford a deflated and mistake filled program like that. Shocking!
Minerva Fabienne-Hase was ill for that event and the Georgian skaters were given inflated GOE and PCS in all events. I am not sure it is a reliable indicator for the rest of the season. The Georgian pair have started well, but I am not sure that the difference is as great as the scores from that event suggested.

But we can only have so much Puccini and Bocelli (or Vivaldi, though not that utilized much this season), give me either the underused composers (Donizetti, Pugni, Rossini, Bellini, or even Verdi) or Mina
There is Paganini and Respighi, baroque and renaissance, and movie music.

I think there are two versions of skate together at play here and I am not sure which one he meant.

It could be as a unit or it could be literally more training.

I think it is about the timing on the toes that have been off this whole week. They were spot on in the last two seasons. Learning that new sequence probably has taken a toll on them, and my initial hypothesis is that they have put down a lot of work on the jumps, individually but not enough together. Their jumps are stronger this year despite what we saw here.

It could also be what was in one of the articles about them (look at the Canadian thread). Deanna explained that they cannot do a lot of full run-throughs so they work bits by bits. With new programs like that, at some point, they need to have the experience of doing them in full. It will take more time but I am confident. I think they will get through this. Seriously not worried. I would like them to have a fantastic olympic season but to me, everything is already a cherry on the cake. They are world champions. They have skated so well in Montreal (and I was there!!! ) and nothing can take that away from them. They want more and I want more from them too but it's not as visceral here for me than what I wish for other skaters :)

Paganini No thank you ;)
Respighi, I cannot believe nobody is skating to Pines of Rome.

Morricone, Nino Rota for instance, not classical but very suitable and enjoyable music for skating.

Bellini, Donizetti, Boccherini, Busoni, Cherubini... there are so many but skaters usually pick "greatest hits only"

Cherubini has a great Requiem ...

The Dies Irae is fabulously intense and I can see it being skated.

I'm not sure that skating more is the answer. I am concerned about them overdoing things and then ending up unable to compete. The twist was a fluke mistake for them. It may be something as simple as Deanna being on the way down with a cold and her ears and balance (which would affect twisting) being slightly off.

I was thinking that it's the first time she skates without her hair fully tied up and that may be an issue LOL :).

I am not worried. I think they do need to skate a bit more together for the SBS jumps. The twist and lift, I am so not worried about.

I think somebody skated to the Pines of Rome, but it was ages ago in some past life, I would never remember who it was. But Kimmie Meissner skated to Belkis, Queen of Sheba in a pretty red dress in Torino. Guess what, Kimmie skated to the Pines of Rome as well in juniors. Movie music from Italian expatriates would work, or something like what Valentina Marchei did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wawYXs3bP3I, although I guess it's more intimidating to explore Ernesto De Curtis than opera overtures.

Last lift?! Every one in pairs and dance has been botched for the past two days. Hopefully tomorrow will be better but I’m not expecting that. My hopes are camera crews for the rest of season take careful notes on what NOT to do.
I just hope they will fire whomever is responisible for this atrocity

Protocols are out

Max and Deanna got all level 4s (except of course, on that twist)
I hadn't seen the double salchow... I thought they both did triples.. oh well. They got a Q on the last 2a but still that wasn't a bad scoring element. A lot of positives. For instance, they had a very high earning death spiral 6.34 points total with GOE and level 4.
I see improvements and I am happy.

Looks like a normal reaction, and nobody blaming anybody is a good sign.

Ditto on Pines of Rome 💚

R+R were sooo good, great music choice and almost perfect performance. Happy to see it.
