2025 Grand Prix de France Men's Free Skate

Oh, I don't think his team thinks that. But I'm starting to. "I don't like his hair. I don't like his costume. He deserves 5's in PCS. He's a straight white boy. He's speaking Russian, so not a real American." Jesus, it's just exhausting, and I'm not even in love with the programs this year.
You see, this is what is to be expected when someone is too blatantly pushed and overscored, the public starts to push back. That's all.
And his arrogance probably does not help either.

Congrats to the top 3 medalists. I just saw the top 3 on Peacock and they all skated well. Special congrats to Ilia and the score is well deserved! His voiceover is growing on me and I loved the costume. Nika is certainly growing on me.

This is the first time he's held my interest throughout a program. I could grow to like his skating.

I don't really follow the men these days, and only watched the top 3 or so here at this comp, so I haven't been commenting. But having seen Ilia in person, I agree with those who say his performances in the arena do grab you, and I haven't found him to be arrogant. :scratch2:

The voiceover seems silly, though. A simple change to a different preposition -- "something AND not nothing" rather than "something BUT not nothing" would have at least given that one sentence internal logic. I am guessing he meant something along the lines of what lariko said, the feeling of having to question one's worth each and every time one steps on competitive ice, of needing to be -- or at least expected to be -- on top of the podium every time, etc. But whatever. I think the voiceover is a mistake but like the program, and his skating, overall. Ilia truly makes the quads seem effortless and appealing to the eye.

These threads of course delivered everything expected. Malinin's haircut, costume, artistry, PCS, programs, thoughts, orgins, talking to his dad/coach are all bad. Yup. That's our wonderful forum crowd here in full blossom.
Yes and after 4 years this is really getting old. I am sorry if Ilia isn't what you want but he who you have, so please give him the respect he deserves please.

I am not sure why we should respect incoherence and platitudes, but with voiceovers one has to keep in mind there are commentators talking during one's skate, on a low quality stream voices may sound similar, and their philosophy may sound like: "Lost in the unknown, embrace the storm, a good quad flip to start with, he is making it look easy".

I think Microsoft is trying to tell me something.

I had to reinstall Windows and everything else on the laptop earlier in the week, and I haven't had a chance to put my normal wallpaper back on yet. So, for the past few days, I have had a variety of different stock photos appearing as my wallpaper.

On Thursday, this is what was displayed:

It's a sign! 🌵

I get these on bootup, before my wall paper...some are pretty striking. The desert at night is an awesome thing.

Ilia owned this competition from beginning to end and I wish I had been there to watch it in person. I admit his short program was a bit frantic and ‘let’s throw the kitchen sink at it’ but I thought his FS showed a new maturity and patience from him. I hope he continues to moderate his tech content and work on his musicality and skating skills. But I’m a huge fan. Adam is too good a skater to keep delivering the hot messes of short programs that he has skated the past couple years. I loved his free skate and he so earned his silver medal. Not sure what to say about the rest of the field? Onwards and upwards maybe??

Well, his federation did, to start with. I guess they sent him to a "sensitivity training" and announced it publicly not because they thought him too much of an empath. I know his fans tend to look away from it but whatever backlash he gets online is very much a response to his own behaviour, as well as to the push so blatant that many people find it embarrassing to watch.

You aren't even joking. I just checked. I had no idea they actually did that until now.

Amen.

Who cares if the poem doesn't make sense? Who cares how he speaks Russian to his dad? Who cares that he's a white American boy? Really people, what is wrong with you? This is about skating. Period. Ilia is the best skater in the world, regardless if you like him or not. Period. Get over it.

No he isn't. He's a jumper who couldn't execute a deep, carved edge into the ice if his life depended on it. We're talking skating skills here. Worse yet, of all the World Figure skating champions he actually got the lowest step sequence score of any man. Ever. Heaven forbid a fact gets posted once in awhile. Don't give any skater credit for skills they do not possess - it's unfair to the skaters who worked their asses off learning those skills and exhibiting them at every event they skate.

What's next - expecting someone to swallow the bully bull that Cardi B is the best singer in the world? She doesn't even sing. She raps. Metaphorically, so does Ilia. He can't sing either.

"Best" is an opinion. So, no not everyone will agree with your comment. He's the "highest scoring" skater for sure. He IMHO will likely win the Olympics and his win will be deserved due to his technical content. IMHO, he's the best "jumper" in the field for sure but the best "skater" implies he has the best SS which clearly isn't objectively true. How he ranks from a performance and choreography standpoint is subjective to a certain degree. But, certainly he isn't doing the most intricate complex, or largest amount of choreography. That being said IMHO neither is Adam the second best "jumper" here. Adam objectively had better SS but he isn't doing that much choreography either. It's just not easy to include choreo when you use all your energy to jump. Most of the top level men do just perform jump drills for large segments of their program. It's not limited to Ilya, Adam or skaters from a certain country.

Ironically a number of the posters who are so upset by the criticisms of Ilya are known themselves for making petty, rude comments about skaters they don't prefer. Personally, I agree that we should keep the criticisms focused on the skating ( I don't know Ilya personally and I don't think his loyal fans here do either, he might be a salt of the earth individual or a horrible person or somewhere in between ( likely the latter) the same is true for other skaters... Also speaking multiple languages is great and I don't know why anyone would have a problem with Ilya being able to speak his parents mother tongue) but the "poem" is part of his program. It's low quality does impact how people will view this program. I think the "program" while limited in choreo isn't bad at all and obviously speaks to Ilya. Getting rid of the poem would improve the reception of the program because it frankly distracts from that he does well, jump.

Greatest TES skate - sure, legitimately, bot there is no program, it's just skating from one element to another...
His team and Ilia are brilliant. They are marketing him as more than a technician including personal voice overs to make him seem 'artistic". His transitions or moves like a back flip and raspberry are to show his athletic prowess and sense of artistry and energy. He still has about 20 more pts maybe even more come olympics Mikail and Adam are the closest maybe technically. no one has the consistency on those quads yet though. I am not sure the judges or fans see him skating from element to element. Some think by picking his fs music he is "artisitc" almost toller cranston like. Naumov and Torg were unspectacular and settled nothing in respect to the third spot for the US men. This favours Andrew as he has more international experience.
