2025 Japanese Nationals - Men's FS

Why would JSF send Kazuki instead of Kao to Olys? Especially that Kao is on the podium, it will be very awkward for JSF not to choose him no? :scratch2:

Kao earned his way into the Olympic selection criteria with his bronze medal here at Nationals, and he finished so far above Kazuki at this event (32 points) that it's hard to imagine Kao won't go. They both earned a GP medal this season, and Kao seems to be trending upwards.

Really? I think this would have been likely if Kao was ahead of Kazuki but not on the podium but doesn't Kao being on the podium make it very likely he goes to the Olympics?

I personally far prefer Kazuki but I don't think his performance this season was enough ahead to warrant the Olympics, was it?

The 3rd Men's Olympic spot is inconsequential
Yuma and Shun is all the fed needs for the Team event and potential Men's podium
With Ilia there the fed is no way thinking they will sweep the Men's event

Why not send the extremely popular, internationally fan favorite Kazuki who could generate a lot of interest with casual viewers
with his dynamic personality and exciting SP
This would also be a smart move for the fed financially as it would please the mass of Kazuki fans (who's not a fan of Kazuki~)

The 3rd WC spot on the other hand, is more important since we don't really know who's going to participate after the Olympics
Kazuki has a good track record at WC but if he really does decide to retire after this season then it makes more sense to send Kao
who needs to build back his World Standings for next season
At this point, there is more of a chance for a higher placement for either Kao or Kazuki at WC than at Olys

Luckily, for JSF Kazuki has met enough of the criteria for them to justify sending him to the Olympics
We'll see what they decide~

I don't understand how the criteria exactly work but it would make much more sense to send Kao to olympics. He medalled at nats, did significantly better than Kazuki (in both segments), he medalled at grand prix (same as Kazuki, yes, his second result was worse but when he medalled in Canada he also won with Kazuki) and his ceiling seems to be higher.
But I'm heartbroken for Kazuki. I wish he got olympic experience in his career.
Let's see what JSF will do.

Shun I’m so relieved!

If it plays out like this at the Olympics but with Ilia and Co in the mix, I wonder if the international judges would cook to put Yuma above Shun?

I’m fond of both boys but…….

Do you think they would have cooked if Shun hit his 4Lz?

Domestically, no. For that, see NHK this year.
Internationally........ really depends on the day of. Olympic Ice is slippery, even for champions. Beijing out of the last three might have been the most predictable.

I would've had them a lot closer overall, Shun was robbed in PCS in both segments but there's a good case for Yuma taking the title (by a slim margin) because of his SP brilliance and the skating skills gap between the two.

shun being robbed in PCS is well.... story of the season
Keep in mind that the LP actually has more weight, so it makes *less* sense for Kagiyama to be ahead. It's not like he was fully clean even in the SP.

Not to overstate Sato's talents, because he tends to waste a lot of the music IMO and his jumps have poor takeoffs (and that camel spin is just bad), but these results have made little sense to me over the year.

But Kao also has tons of fans..... I'd hate to imagine the uproar that will happen if JSF chooses Kazuki over Kao, even worse Kazuki might get lots of hate messages like what happened to Mana 4 years ago :( I really don't want to see that happening ever again..

I like Kazuki Tomono more than Kao Miura. But based on the criteria of JSF Kao did enought to be part of the Olympic games.
But, I would not be mad if they choose Kazuki Tomono to the Olympic, I prefer him !

I don't feel Olympic committees send athletes based on popularity. They need to have something to show for in terms of where their funds and support went - and that always means the team that can secure the highest placements.

Even beyond that, Tomono is the older athlete. A committee would feel that the younger athlete should be invested into, because they have a longer scope for competition.

I hope that tomorrow we don't have a discussion about who's going to the games between Mone and Rinka. If Mone goes on a long program like she did at the GPF and is beaten by Rinka, it would break my heart to choose between the two.

Unless a change is made, skaters placing within Top 12 will earn funding for next season
Juniors placing within Top 12 will be included in the count however, those who placed within Top 8 at Junior Nationals will have already earned funding
Skaters who have previously announced retirement from competition at the end of this season will not be included in the Top 12 count
A skater who places below Top 12 at Nationals or Top 8 at Junior Nationals could still be added for funding if they receive a CS, GP or JGP assignment next season

Kao does have a lot of fans but it appears to me that many, if not most his fans also support Kazuki
And from what I've seen Kao's fans will be fine with Kazuki being chosen for the Oly spot
Believe me, if Kazuki is chosen, JSF will definitely make it make sense~

Yuma Kagiyama (after FS)

"I was very frustrated at the time. Rather than feeling like I had won, I felt like I was weak. I really didn't want to cry in public, but I still cried. However, I think this is my current level, and I need to work harder. This competition is not the end, but just a stepping stone, so I will give it my all in the remaining time and try to have no regrets at the Olympics."
