I got called up to US Nationals!!!

Long time no see everyone - this is Ken. since Camden unfortunately withdrew, I'm being called up as first alternate to compete at US Nationals next week!

This has been my endgame goal and dream since I returned to skating 2 years ago, so I'm really happy to have gotten here 🥹

A bit of retrospective on my Sectionals performances - dealing with an emergency boot change and sickness a few weeks before the competition threw off my preparations hard. Pulling off the cleanest program I've done to date in spite of that is the biggest accomplishment I could say I've ever achieved in my skating career.

My preparations haven't exactly been airtight this time either (holiday schedule at a small and cold rink 😬) but I'm hoping to make the most of this privilege to perform on the national stage.

LOL! Well, you fooled ME! I thought we had a real skater here....I guess we now cant call you "I'm just Ken."

Four days to go and I will have to leave for my boat. Best of luck to all skaters. Please be careful flying on aeroplanes. US Fatalities due to flu have jumped from 1900 to 3000. Only 25 percent of adults are vaxed. Any vax spurs the immune system....please wear real masks on Aeroplanes and in crowds. Ask Amber Glenn, L Hendrix and Vincent Zhou what its like to be sick at a major event. Be like the Japanese. Wear masks.

Such interesting stories this year.

So, Ilia will be a big story, but there is a mighty battle among the other men to secure their spots. Everyone expects Jason to get one of them, including me, but that's not a lock. I am still on the Max-or-die train.

Lots of movement in US Dance since last year. Chock and Bates are locked in, but how does the rest of the podium stack up?

I'm hoping for an epic ladies shoot-out. Alysa with two ISU titles since last nationals, Amber is sleeping tiger, and who knows what Isabeau is going to deliver. Will the Lady Gaga program show up? Will Sarah Everhardt pull it all together?

And pairs... what a saga. Entirely plausible that the fourth best team is bound for Milan because of citizenship issues.

I agree with your thoughts, overall, especially re Max Naumov. I thought Max should have been third at 2025 U.S. Nats. 🥹 I'm rooting for Max hard because of his talent and his huge heart. ❤️ His parents raised a wonderful young man. How he's carried himself with such grace, courage, and devotion this past year is uplifting and extraordinary.

Max has been right near the top for a while now and fourth for at least three straight years at Nats, despite battling injury setbacks, and now out of the blue, such life-changing loss. He's an amazing young man who deserves good things to happen. No matter the outcome at Nats this year, I hope Max continues to pursue his skating dreams, with much deserved support and recognition. Meanwhile, 'Go, Max!' 🎉

Agreed. But, I'm not entirely sure which team you view as the 4th best U.S. team. I think 1 and 2 are Kam/ O'Shea and Efimova/ Mitrofanov, with the latter perhaps having an edge for the win and a second straight U.S. championships gold, if Ellie hasn't fully figured out clean throw landings. Third, fourth, and fifth will be a tight battle between Chan/ Howe; Shin/ Nagy; and McBeath/ Parkman. All three of these teams are capable of placing third, or higher. But I don't think there's any doubt that U.S. fed will favor Shin/ Nagy if they skate well. Val Plazas & Max Fernandez are, of course, also in the mix for a top five placement at Nats, and premium assignment consideration. 🤔

I think U.S. fed will desire to send Shin/Nagy to the Olympics with K/O, so placements and ultimate Worlds and Olympics assignments will be nail-biting in pairs. Of course, Efi/Mit and McB/Park are not eligible for the Olympics, so I think U.S. fed's preferences may be K/O and Shin/ Nagy for the Olympics, or else K/O and Chan/Howe for the Olympics, which is what I hope will happen.🍀 If the latter case happens, I would expect to see Efi/Mit; Shin/Nagy; and McB/Park at 4CCs (with Val & Max, Liu/Bedard, Flores/Wang, and Williams/Lewer hopefully given other post-Nats opportunities at minor comps, if there are any other late season int'l pairs comps available).

Finally, at Worlds with the luxury of three pairs spots: K/O; Efi/Mit; and Shin/Nagy. In this way, S/N get to have the more important Worlds experience, without being under tremendous pressure to excel. Plus, it would cement S/N having a higher standing for next season's warm-up groups. I will be pissed if U.S. fed tries to send Shin/ Nagy to both Olympics and Worlds. 😡 That would not be fair, due to the number of very deserving U.S. pairs teams. So spread the wealth! If C/H are planning to retire, they are a veteran team who deserve the Olympics experience. Danny may retire soon, too, so this is his final shot at an Olympics.

Meanwhile, McB/Park are a very good team who have had good results this season (better than S/N early on), and they are 2025 U.S. silver medalists). So, I hope McB/Park will be rewarded with a 4CCs slot at least. As well, Val & Max are hungry and showing a bit of improvement by Val on sbs jumps and throws. Plus, their lifts and program concepts have always been stellar.

I’m on the Jimmy or die train. I didn’t buy an expensive stuffie for my health.

Look at the colored schedule for this one. But you are right. In my case, it was Boston Worlds 2016. I remember as if you climbed the escalator which was turned off as high as you could go, there were empty food vendors and the condiments had to have plastic over the nozzels as there were so many rodents around. That is the floor I MIGHT have hid in a bathroom... LOL!

Ugh why start now, they have literally never done it (at any Nationals I have attended. There are plenty I have not attended).

I don't know if anyone has posted this anywhere yet but it bears repeating. Enterprise does not allow you to bring food into the arena and you can only have clear plastic bags that are 12"x12"x5" or 1 gallon ziplok bags. I phoned their head office a few months ago to verify this. I can understand the bag policy for a hockey game but somehow think figure skating fans are a lot less dangerous. :laugh4:
Every venue I have ever been to (except Worlds) has said this. No venue has YET enforced it (other than Worlds). Brent told me they made exceptions for USFS events. But maybe they think we will all pay for Build A Bears.

Ken is going to have stuffies. I love first Nationals.

Well I wouldn't want to waltz in with my Coach shoulder purse and be told I couldn't have it. Bringing the clear plastic as stated.

Well of course not. I bring a clear plastic (which has been reinforced twice by my long suffering BIL) and has Pride and US flags, pens for Gracie, diet cokes, snacks, sharpies for flag signings, tissues in case someone makes me bawl so I don’t have to use a kind GS’s clean sock to mop up my tears, gloves, hardback book for Gracie to sign, for that matter might bring Nathan’s book in case there’s a signing opportunity there, charging cords and bricks for my phone, masks, hairbrush, extra makeup, I don’t know what all else is in there. I need to poke through it tonight. White plastic trash bag of stuffies. Blanket. Scarf. Dozen roses for Gracie. My walker.
My ride has been instructed to not leave until I am safely in in case there are issues.
I’ve yet to have anyone at any venue including at Skate America give me grief.
I did have someone at a gymnastic meet give me minor grief over bananas but then decide fruit was ok.
I tell them my walker will set off the metal detector and they usually just wave me through.

Well, just when I've about given up hope, we learn in the USFSA article that Alisa is hoping for a positive outcome on citizenship next week.

Yes, I saw this same article. But it still seems rather unclear. We were previously told that the IOC has a December deadline for U.S. citizenship. So, perhaps citizenship has been promised, but they are holding back on letting the public know, in order to have a big dramatic reveal at the clickbait gala post-Nats.

It would be a boon if Efi/Mit could go to the Olympics with K/O. In which case, I suspect Chan/Howe, Shin/ Nagy, and either McB/Park or Val & Max would be assigned to 4CCs, and S/N would be the beneficiares of the third spot at 2026 Worlds.

I am sorry. Yes they not so many pair teams.
However they do have a Novice National Championship in both pairs and dance that people can watch on YouTube.

The single women and single Novice havr no such championships that are being watched on YouTube.

I see junior and see senior for singles but no Novice women nor novice men.

I would say the U.s. lacks the younger generation in singles (that could become pairs and dance )

They let them fall by wayside thinking they havr money due to attention that the Olympics Gold Medalist receive and let the non medalist flounder.
