2026 Canadian Nationals : Men's Long Program

Edward very very messy, and the program seems to go on forever, but it's good to see him coming back from difficulty and injury. Apparently eight of the elements under review. Yikes.

But huge kudos to him for going for everything, and I wish him the best in his recovery. He has a great jumping frame, if I'm allowed to say that. And I mean that in the same way that taller Cranston used to say that Kurt Browning had the ideal jumping body - compact, powerful, that sort of thing. A little more work on tidying things up, and he is definitely in the run for heating things up after the current leaders retire.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Mark Hanretty has been one of the best additions to international figure skating in the last five years. I knew he competed, but I only really discovered him through his commentary—and it’s outstanding. He’s knowledgeable across all disciplines, insightful, and consistently positive, and I’m always learning something new from him despite following skating for decades.

Having him at Canadian Nationals is an absolute treat. It really highlights the contrast with U.S. Nationals—I honestly don’t think I could sit through an entire event listening to the abominable commentary of Tara and Johnny....
I can no longer listen to Johnny and Tara either, which is why I seek out the Japanese broadcast of US Nationals despite being in the US...

Just saying Yvan Desjardins best student was Nicolas Nadeau, I wonder what end the career of Nicolas, he was great !
Nicolas grew over 6 ft, and although he was able to land multiple quads, he had injuries and difficulties that ended up causing him to move to pairs where he was another total natural and stayed for a couple of years making the national team on a couple occasions I believe.

He and his partner ended up taking a contract to skate on cruise ships I believe, which I remember thinking was a good idea at the time because of the depth in pairs in Canada- but now I look back and wish she had stayed around a bit, because he was one of the most naturally charismatic skaters I've ever seen. And I'm not exaggerating.

I remember every year looking forward to his programs and never being let down. I remember he skated an Elvis program the same year as Javier Fernandez of spain, and thinking that his program was light years ahead in terms of expression Charisma choreography, that sort of thing. I would hazard to say he had the most Charisma of any Canadian male skater since Kurt browning. I can only really think of Osmond as another skater who exuded as much personality and Pizazz as he did. Absolutely a natural performer.

Nicolas had a severe ankle injury. When he came back from it, he could no longer jump the lutz. He still competed for a season or two. That's when I saw him do a quad loop at nationals. Then, he rebranded as a pairs skater with Emmanuelle Proft. They were doing well for a new team with none of them with pairs experience but they got offered a gig as pro skaters and took it.

I saw Nicolas in the Kiss and cry with Eddy this fall... so maybe he is back coaching.

now, my favourite skater of Yvan Desjardins wasn't Nicolas.... though Nicolas with his silver at junior worlds is perhaps the better achievement...

Joseph Phan was really my favourite skater from Yvan. And now, Eddy :)
