Canadian Nationals were very good this year, much better than last year I would think.
For instance, 10 women out of 18 reached the domestic benchmark score and could get international assignments based on that.
Women skated so well this weekend. Of course, there were a few deceptions but that's also normal. So many 3-3 combos in the SP too ! WOW Maddie decided she wanted to win and did what she needed. One pop in the SP, one in the LP. I hope she now realizes how good she is and get rid of the darkness. Gabrielle, gosh, I would have cried with her today. She did so well all weekend. I wish her layout was a bit simpler. It may have been the difference for her. But she fought so hard and came close. If anyone had told me she would win a silver medal at Nationals in September, I would have been very doubtful. Welcome to Minsol. She did well. She will need to clean her flutz though... She got 3 deductions for her edge calls and couple rotation calls too but she is beautiful to watch. A bit sad that Sara-Maude didn't land her triple axel today but there was a lot of pressure on her shoulders. Fée Ann was so close from a perfect program. She's one of the best jumper in the world. You gotta watch her jumps. They are something else : huge, beautiful air position, speed at landing... I hope she will be at 4CC

Men's SP was something else too. The number of quads landed was impressive. It was a huge contrast with last year's nationals plagued by injuries and illness when two out of the three medal winners didn't even have a triple axel let alone a quad. This being said, the level is being pushed by our juniors, many taking part in the senior category this year. It was so nice to see Stephen with two solid skates win his first senior title (so he is no longer in the category of Canadian skaters winning an international competition and not winning their own championship... sadly Katherine Medland Spence and Sara-Maude Dupuis are still in that club). I look forward to seeing him acquire more and more confidence as he is clearly a top ten kind of skater. Thank you Roman for all these years. We will miss your beautiful skating. There were no announcements yet but it did feel like a swan song for Roman. Keegan : all I can say is that it was fun that he could do backflips in the actual competition now :). I wish he had returned a few months earlier as he was getting better and better but it was too little too late. At 33, it's still quite an achievement. I am so happy for John Kim's SP and well his LP was good too. He is my dark horse for a medal soon.

Pairs : the 3 "senior" regular teams were hit and miss. I cannot believe that Deanna was sick again. She is such a fighter. I hope they experience the Olympics with joy and healthy. Lia and Trennt have been knocking on the door for a while winning the free skate last year too.. Well, it was their moment. Kelly Ann and Loucas were amazing in the LP. They are young and already have so much experience. If there is one discipline I wish Canada had another spot, it would be for the pairs. Ava and Yoni are stellar. They, and our other junior team of Jazzy and Kiki are the future of pairs in Canada and I believe this future is bright. It will be even brighter with Miyu and Tristan who showed a lot of promise and flair this weekend as well.

Dance... I kept it for the end. Piper and Paul didn't just complain about the judging this season. They went home and revamped their programs. They worked hard and it paid off. Not a dull moment. Tons of flow and speed. The integration of the elements is smoother. I hope this work will be recognized at the Olympics. LaLa were divine today. Their White Crow program is exquisite. It goes by in a flash. Marie-Jade and Romain will have a lot of work to do now because they need a new RD for the Olympics. They too made sure that they would work on their FD. It was better than earlier. Alicia and Paul were close but not close enough. They are still quite young and they remind me of Hubbell and Donohue with their power and speed (though they are not as tall) and I hope to see them for the next quad cycle.

Syncrho was very strong too. I love how Skate Canada has included it in our Nationals.

Juniors : what else can I say aside from Lia Cho. WOW !

Hi,

Went to the women short and pairs long program on Saturday... first time in years.

I was impressed with most of the women, which is a first, but Minsol was exquisite and Gabby so fast and powerful.

In pairs, the person who unexpectedly blew me away is Lia Pereira. She has a presence, polish and poised that does not necessarily translate on tv. She moves beautifully and performs with confidence.

It was a great night and so nice to see Jeffrey Buttle in the Kiss and Cry.

I haven't been able to watch ID yet, so that will come later. This is what I wrote (it's cross-posting from the championshops threads where I summarised my experience afterwards). I use first names throughout, except for the Davids.

Pairs FS:
I've just watched the Pairs FS with that surprising outcome. It started off slowly with Eliana and Thierry, but I am sure if they have a better year with no injuries they will improve, if not to a career internationally. I was completely charmed by Miyu and Tristan. She is so exuberant, he so steady. Great combination. Jazmine and Kieran can do better, still worthwhile to watch. Kelly Anne and Loucas had the skate of their lives. I loved the show of emotions at the end. Well done! Ava and Yohnathan did great. It will be good to see them at 4CC (with Kelly Ann and Loucas maybe). Just not enough for the podium, but that will come soon. I have always loved their Gladiator FS, so I was pleasantly surprised when Lia and Trennt went back to it. Maybe not a perfect skate but some elements were definitely very well executed. Their emotions were also a wonder to behold. So pleased for them. A shame about Diana and Maxime though. Thank goodness for their excellent short!

Men's SP:
I took part in the competition thread (always fun) during the competition itself. So nothing here.

Men's FS:
Well, just watched the men, and I will focus on my highlights but also on some unhappy experiences. Good for Bruce to have a good skate and always a good watch. I felt really sorry for Grayson who can do so much better than what he showed here. Shohei did a good job. With all the Davids you have to mention their last names, but David Li was an absolute highlight. He was pleased too. Anthony was a wonderful watch but not at his best. Still very special. John skated well, but is a little bland (sorry fans). I felt really sorry for Matthew who has lovely lines, but it wasn't his day. Keegan never disappoints even when he pops jumps. He might not have won anything, but that guy can really perform. I missed the pictures of his children though. Aleksa did his glorious 3lo-3lo combination, my favourite. In the short it was a lutz-loop (more points I think) but I like the 2 loops better. He had a good skate in general. I choked up when Roman finished (as he did himself) and he showed us he hasn't been the champion twice for nothing. Although it was a pity for Wesley, not to attain the podium but kudo's to him anyway after all those issues he has had. And Steven did great. Much less of a jumping machine, more of an allround skater now. Excellent. But it was funny to see that this head-to-head of him and Roman again led them to end close together (but 20 points difference though). Still think Ted and Mark are a golden combination, letting us enjoy the programmes.

This last relates to the custom in Canada to not talk during the programmes, only before (like during warm-up) and the introductions, and during replays afterwards. Just like at the JGP's. Not just Ted and Mark, with other accompanying commentators as well.

Loved watching the Canadian Nationals. Ted Barton and company do a great job of showcasing the skaters. I feel more informed after each skate. Thrilled for Lia and Trennt's first placement; Deanna and Max were classy and knew they had had a sub-par LP. Piper and Paul are the supreme team for me. Love their skills, performance and personal demonstration of character, pride and sportsmanship. A podium finish at the Olympics is more than deserved for Gilles and Poirier.

John is usually less bland. Otherwise, I wouldn't like him :). I guess he just wanted to get the job done here because he's been wild with consistency.

Aleksa does 3loop-3toe in the SP. I guess they want to avoid the UR possibilities. I would be delighted if he also did 3loop-3loop in his SP.

thanks for joining in the competition threads ! It's always nice to hear what non-Canadians think of our skaters !

So would I, so would I. I love watching Canadians, helped of course by being able to watch. Skate Canada (or a broadcaster, whatever) always make it possible to watch from abroad. I always look forward to it, and the Challenge as well. I like the focus on the skating, and not just the jumps.

It was so great to see that we now have much more depth in both the men's and women's events. Hopefully the competitors will all push each other over the next quad!

So happy to see Stephen finally getting to compete without injuries. He's had a fantastic season and I hope the rest of his season will be just as good (and hopefully at top 10 finish at Worlds!).

Really enjoyed the dance events - we are so lucky to have such amazing talent.

I hope Deanna and Max can quickly figure out what is going on with their jumps.. Kelly Ann and Loucas definitely had the skate of the night!

Very happy for Maddie on her 2nd Olympics. Gabby was great too! I was honestly surprised at how good she was. She has been through so much over the past few years and it was fantastic to see the results of her hard work and determination.

I liked the various commentators. Mark was great, he did his research on the skaters. Kirsten was a good listen, plus it was really interesting for her commentary on the Juniors since two of her teams were there. Plus it was fun hearing the commentators realize that there was a dog in the kiss and cry for some of the skaters 😁

Women - I've been following Megan, Reese and Lulu during the Skate Ontario sectional series and feel like I'm almost adopting them. It was great to see them all shine at Nationals. Sorry to see that Katherine had to withdraw, she did so well last season and health kept her from building on it. Watching the final four skaters was intense. It was hard watching Sara-Maude's free. I hope that she's able to relax and have her usual 4CC experience to end her season. She is more than a 3A and I love her skating with or without it ❤️

I'm glad to read that Gabrielle's tears weren't just heartbreak. She got so close and has so much to be proud of. Whatever she decides after 4CC, she can hold her head up high. Maddie locked in. I knew she would when I saw the new dress, that is a dress for locking in.

Men - Romsky vs Gogo (rightfully) got the attention this season and it was great to see it come to its conclusion here. Bravo to both men, they really pushed each other. Aleksa I've grown fond of, I am so glad he stopped going for the 3F-3T in the short. Also wonderful to see Wesley make a strong comeback and get so close to the podium. I hope he's able to get a good SB at 4CC and be included on the National Team next season.

One of the rivalries I've liked this season is Anthony vs David B vs Grayson. It'll probably change next season since Anthony and David B age out of Juniors while Grayson has another season of eligbility. Plus the other NextGen alumni can get in on it. It was a good time watching the men this year, definitely higher scoring than previous years. I hope they keep it up and keep pushing each other, I like watching them.

Pairs - Yunoki/Taylor are fun, I want to see them get out internationally. Also good to see Kemp/Elizarov holding their own in their first season of Seniors.

Ice Dance - I was interested in seeing who would place 6th to get the 4CC spot, didn't think it would be Hensen/Lickers, lol. Robinson/Portz really should get an assignment, they are so close to 4CC minimums. It's a shame they're missing out on an Olympic year 4CC by 1.08 points 😭 Fournier/Zhu have come a long way and it's great to see them getting the chance at 4CC.

I don't usually watch Nationals but I was very impressed with what I saw. Nobody seemed to have a 'bad' skate - ok, mistakes were made but at all times they just got on with it and pushed for those levels. And there were some really great performances with some good music choices.

One thing which struck me very hard: the camerawork was superb. Several times at major events (and not the Challenge series), I have got annoyed at this ridiculous zooming-out so I have to strain my eyes to see the performers as if I am in the nosebleed seats. Also, the zooming IN so that you just see the top half of the skater. That is fine at the start of the programme but otherwise you need to see the entire body ALL THE TIME.

Cameramen, if you read this, please note: IT CANNOT BE THAT DIFFICULT to follow the skaters with your cameras that we at home can all see what's going on.

WELL DONE SKATE CANADA!

I finally managed to watch the FD, and here's how I experienced it.

First of all. I liked Ted & Mark, I liked Ted & Kirstin, but Ted and Kaitlyn are also a joy to listen to. I missed Lucy Hancock's WTF creations costume wise, I enjoyed Peter Beaumont's enthusiasm after the skate (I've never seen him get so excited before), I rather liked Nadiia and Noé together, I just loved Lily and Nathan's Free Dance. Such a shame that fluke fall. Still got quite a few points though. I was so impressed by Alicia and Paul. That Dance really pulled me in. So lyrical. Marie-Jade and Romain have improved a lot skating wise (they always were good at the lifts), so it was their's to loose. At least the difference was bigger than a few 100th's of a point (Kaitlyn would know how that feels from back in 2014 at World's). So pleased to see Marjorie and Zachary dance an amost perfect White Crow (and I am really glad they went back to it). And Piper and Paul did a lovely Vincent. It really is re-imagined from years before, and is a masterpiece to me. It was a great evening, with the level really going upwards and upwards.

How do I watch the Canadian Nationals? I was watching the Eastern European Figure Skating all weekend, and was intrigued by how Piper and Paul re-imagined their Free Dance. I have Peackock, Netflix, and a few others streaming services, but couldn't find the Canadian Nationals.
