Opening Ceremony

that cauldron is trippy.

Hang on. Has the Milan one been lit too?

After staying up late to see it, I missed it! :drama:

Lame looking cauldrons i hope LA isn't thinking of replacing the historic cauldron at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 2028.

.

yes, by Tomba and Compagnoni

Ah, I thought there was more to come after them.

That was an anti-climax of a lighting. Not even realising it had been lit!

Right, TNT Sports have gone back to the studio, so I'm winding it back.

I just checked, and that's right enough. They've only had Refugee Athletes at the Summer Olympics.

I thought there had been in the Winter Olympics too.

Thanks, I knew I could count on you :)

To add there is the Biathlon Refugee Team (BRT). Daria Dalidovich who fled from Belarus competes in the world cup.

Nick Mullins has just listed a whole pile of people that will be torchbearers before they have even appeared. :drama:

Alberto Tomba was the only name amongst them that I recognised.

The 88 Olympics are special for me. It’s when my 11-year-old self discovered figure skating and I vividly remember the coverage of Tomba offered Katerina his gold medal!

I like the opening, can say it was much better than the dogs breakfast that was of Paris 2024!
I'm glad it didn't rely as much on Italian stereotypes as the ceremony in Paris relied on French stereotypes.

I just wound it back.

I did actually see it being lit! But I thought it was one of those fancy light shows! I didn't realise that was the flame being lit!

What ever happened to having a proper cauldron, or giant version of the torch?

I think the Roman Satellite is still in development- it's a different project from the James Webb, which has already launched.

Trump has been attacking it's funding, but Congress has yet to approve the cuts
That’s wild! It was WFIRST…I’ve been gone a long time and always offhandedly thought they renamed James Webb! I was so sure I didn’t even bother to check, LOL.

Getting older, man…

The branding is weird though because they’re calling it the mother of Hubble but I thought JWST was supposed to be that. I now see that each advances different aspects of what Hubble started?

It looks like there were serious calls to rename JWST, and perhaps someone had mentioned Nancy Grace Roman as an alternate name. Which I remembered but confused with what actually happened—James Webb stayed the same and WFIRST took a new nanme.
