Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps out of Team Event due to injury

Canadian world figure skating champions Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps will not compete in the Olympic team event in Italy due to a training injury sustained by Stellato-Dudek in Quebec, the Canadian Olympic Committee announced Monday. The COC stated that Stellato-Dudek's condition will be monitored daily to determine whether she can compete in the individual pairs event with Deschamps.

This is awful.

Another article that talks to the other Canadian skaters in Milan. It does confirm the plan was to split Pairs with Lia/Trennt doing the free.

The plan to split the pairs in the team event makes a lot of sense. Pairs is a very physically taxing discipline, and older athletes don't recover as quickly as younger ones do. Having that plan also means that doing the whole team event isn't a total shock/change of plans for Lea and Trennt.

It also made sense considering PM have had better lps at nationals the last couple years. But oh well.... Going for good news soon. Canada got a bad break in 2022 and now 'in 2026.

I suppose but Lea and Trennt while super nice people have really gone backwards from their breakout 2024 year. They have fallen behind essentially all the American teams which they were ahead. While Deanna nad Mx did relatively poorly fifth last year one would have expected and hoped Lea and Trennt would have manged top 8 but they didn't I had so much ope and promise for this team after 2022. I know it is nice to have others compete but it was such a nice story a 42 year old with an impossible dream. Might really be impossible now. I guess Canada really needs to hope the judges will reward Piper and Paul. I just don't feel good. They are marking Fear and Gibson high, very high, too high and the it alians seem to be coming back from the grave and in their home country. Could be humble pie for Canada worseif they also l ose men and women's hockey gold too and curling. This is not looking good for hte maple leaf. But the great red, white and blue with their fearless Trump leader are looking good in so many disciplines not just skating. They will have so much to cheer for. EVen their senior competitor is injured but unlike Deanno look like she will compete in skiing. Yay Lindsay Vonn. Come on Deanna - Oscar wants you to show off those dresses!!!

not quite true... I see it as some American, not ALL, have improved a lot. Look, Kelly Ann and Loucas have struggled a lot and then did well in their last two international competitions. It happens that some of the mid pack teams, especially in pairs, will get some good outings and then not. Lia and Trennt, to me, are still in development stages, aiming for 2030. Some of the American teams were due to peak now.

Sure but it doesn't matter. Look, the USA earned the chance to get 3 spots for the game but then failed to secure the third spot at the qualifier.

No news here is good news.

not just Canada. The planet. Fair judging would reward Piper and Paul. I have seen all these teams live except of course for FBC. Piper and Paul are special and deserving.
I just don't feel good.
Please feel better.

I feel it might be a concussion or something related to the backflip move? But they really are good to be private about it because getting more media and public scrutiny on the injury would just be more stressful for everyone. I really hope Deanna is okay and all the parties involved in the decision keep her overall health and safety and Max's too, in mind. Big hugs for Deanna and Max.

now that the info is out : I also felt it was a concussion (hopefully it's not backflip related UGH) because of the way they were handling it... with monitoring etc.

In the article they confirm she hit her head... not how though and they are asking the media for some privacy so they can focus on preparing for the game.

I am relieved for them. They may not be in stellar shape but I am so happy they get to compete and realize their dream.

They had their first practice today and notably did NOT do a backflip. When I saw them in France they didn't do it during their runthrough but they did it at least once per practice session.

Deanna confirmed in the mixed zone that she did NOT have a concussion, it sounds like the bigger concern was her getting on a flight with the pressure changes in the aircraft and she managed to heal quickly and get the medical green light. They have taken the backflip out of their SP, but they said it was only to ensure safety and prevent injury, not that she was injured on the backflip. She added that nearly all of the speculation and stories written about her condition have been factually inaccurate; don't trust the rumour mill, friends!

If she's read half of the stuff I've seen online it's totally understandable that she wanted to clear things up a bit. I know there are some people out there who want to know what exactly the injury was, but that's absolutely none of our business. If she'd want us to know, she'd tell us.
Jackie Wong also said that their runthrough looked totally normal, like nothing happened. From his practice notes I can see that there wasn't any problem with the elements, they just didn't do the twist, but from what I've witnessed they rarely do that in practice runthroughs.

Hitting the head doesn't necessarily result in a concussion. I once smacked my partner in the side of the head with my elbow in a twist lift and almost knocked him out. He had to stay in bed for a week with severe vertigo, and had weeks of physiotherapy because his head had snapped sideways and his neck muscles went into a spasm. No concussion, though.
