Lajoie and Baker team up for Canada

Wowza. I assume JLB has some sort of working papers after living in Canada for so long, but I wonder if he will try for citizenship? (Not that I am getting ahead of myself:biggrin:)

He has a name made for Patinage Québec in any event. ;)

Oh, I'm so happy to see Jean-Luc returning!
Exactly! He deserves a chance to shine as an ice dance champion, with Marjorie, who is so lovely. I gained new appreciation for Marjorie's talent after hearing Tanith Belbin's commentary at 2026 Worlds. 😍

Jean-Luc is an amazing ice dancer (and also a skilled choreographer and an excellent commentator). He's multi-talented. I can't wait to see this new partnership performing the Golden Waltz RD. 😃

I heard that no matter how long a skater has been retired, they still must be released by the former country they repped, although there would be no necessity for the one-year wait time for international competition. U.S. fed must be thrilled about Skate Canada benefiting from another skilled former U.S. skater, this time in ice dance. 😉

Of course, the U.S. has Canadian Christina Carreira, and previously benefited from Tanith Belbin and somewhat from Mervin Tran. Canada has had Piper Gilles (tho' her mother was Canadian), Keegan Messing (Alaskan, with a Canadian-born mother), Kaitlyn Weaver (Texas-born) and Deanna Stellato (Illinois-born), et al., (all of whom had better opportunities to excel and reach the top in Canada).

uh-oh, guess I will need a new avatar!!!
LOL! Create a 3-way. Kaitlin & Jean-Luc were divine. 🫠 From juniors right up through their final, gorgeous, heartbreaking finale. 🥹 They just had the misfortune of competing in a stacked and stoked U.S. ice dance field!

Are we keeping tabs?
😊 While we're at it, let's give praise and thanks to Great Britain 🇬🇧, Jean-Luc's parents, Kaitlin Hawayek, Seattle, Washington, and to Ice Academy of Montreal! 🇨🇦 👏

Yes - they were divine and criminally underscored on the regular. Their free in Beijing 2022 was, perhaps, my all time favorite ice dance program ever. Magical.

I love both these ice dancers and wish them much success. :love4: I'm just thrilled to see Baker back out there!!! :scream:

How do you think they fit into Canada’s current ice dance hierarchy? What style of programs would you like to see them skate in their debut season?

If P/P retire, I see them easily cruising to Canada #1, especially if the Hannah/Zack rumours are true since they will have to sit out a season.

I'm super excited about this new partnership! I really liked Jean-Luc with Kaitlin, but I always thought that they weren't well matched, physically. Since Marjorie is much shorter than Kaitlin (5 feet, which really shocked me - She skates so big!), I think that she and Jean-Luc will do really well.

I know you meant Jean-Luc but Baker, though it's not a common name in Québec, as it is pretty wide-spread in the Anglo-Saxon world, is also part of our surname landscape. I knew a Baker (French speaking only) family in my college years. They came from the Eastern Townships which is perhaps (outside of Montreal) the most English settled area in Quebec. So, my bet is that people from Québec/Canada who do not follow figure skating closely may even think that Jean-Luc is a dude from Montreal, whose mother tongue is French. They may never know he is American/ British... and may find out only in a couple years, if there are talks about citizenship...

Just like Deanna Stellato could have passed for the daughter of an Italian family living in Montreal or Toronto, if her story hadn't been widely known :) Cue in Alicia Fabbri and her former partner Claudio Pietrantonio both born in the greater Montreal region.

Wish JLb well with Marjorie. They will be Canada No. 1 if P squared retired. I am not so sure Zach and Hanna will fair so well as a team uut this team maybe. Hopefully Jean luc can bring out the fire, passion and diva in Marjorie.

I should be happy about this, but I don't think I'll ever get over H/B never catching their break. 😭 Wish JLB was able to come back for the US, but I understand why this makes much more sense for him and wish them the best. If P/P truly do retire, this could be Canada's new #1!
