2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

Any word on David Shteyngart? I know he is no longer on Ice Partner Search so I assume he has finally found his partner (or given up?) Or maybe I just missed something.

I am still crying every time I watch their skate. I am such an emo softie.
Sounds to me like they are moving on with life the way she was talking which is not unexpected but yeah... sigh
They did a wonderful tribute to Piper and Paul at Stars on Ice utilizing the big screen and live action. They showed an on-screen retrospective of their career (short clips from memorable dances), moved to them skating a short part of Starry Starry Night in person, then moved back to video of their post-skate reactions in Milan. It was wonderfully done, with seamless transitions, and yes, I was crying.

Is there any news about Roman Sadovsky? Is he continuing to skate competitively? I really hope so.
He has been posting videos on YouTube from Stars on Ice. He seems to be really enjoying it.

We will have to wait (for the GP assignments?) to see if this has re-energized him to continue competing or if it a wonderful last hurrah for him.

I was devastated to hear that Lajoie/Lagha had split (though not totally surprised, I believe they split once before but got back together). But excited to see what Lavoie/Baker can do.

Bombardier/Ethier could also be a good move, too.

It'll be interesting to see how it all shakes out when the dust settles.

I am also excited about the two new partnerships. More about B/É though.
LaLa did split when they were like 11 :) I think it's normal at that age to split :) and then realize that you should work together because your talents align.

In any case, though I don't want to get sunken into the rumours and gossips, I am reluctantly starting to believe that LaLa split may be a good one....

Even if I weren't privy of such rumours and gossips, the fact that they are not getting good programs together could also be because they are such opposites when it comes to performing skills and tastes that they couldn't make good choices. So I am open minded in finding out what L/B well.. that was lopareva brissausd....

so here it is : my new monicker for Lajoie-Baker is LABA !!!! :) which sounds like Là-bas, which means like over there :)

I am so creative LOL

LaLa split for a short time after they won Novice at Canadians. She was actually registered to compete at a summer competition in Ottawa the following July with a new partner, but that didn’t work out. LaLa then reunited and were a last minute entry at the Thornhill competition in August, did well, so Slipchuk gave them a Grand Prix and the rest is history as we know it.

I'm not up on any gossip, but their clear struggle the last few years, and the fact that they always seemed like very opposite personalities (though you can, of course, make this work if you have a common goal) made this not a total shock. Though the timing, when they were set to easily move up to Canada #1 (I would be surprised if Piper and Paul continue to compete) is not something skaters would take lightly, I think.

I think I was more surprised by all of Hensen/Lickers, Fabri/Ayer and Lim/Quan. Especially since a bunch of them didn't seem to have alternate partnerships waiting in the wings. And I thought all three had improved dramatically in the last couple of years. Lim/Quan of course had a bit of a disappointing season last year, but I still thought were on the rise.

Speaking of Romsky. He has finally started posting some new YouTube videos on Stars on Ice. Here is his most recent one:

I’m glad it was the last show. I now need our athletes to go home to train hard.

Long live LABA! I formally request permission to join this fan club - it would be one of the first times we were on the same side.
hehe

you were not on Bourne and Kraatz's side ?
I mean I get it that from like 2008 to 2018 I was on Virtue and Moir side and you were not...and since then, I was on Piper and Paul's side and you were not :). but we must have been on the same side at some point ;) The Duchesnays's. ?

I don't think it is quite fair to say I was not on any team's side - more that at various times I preferred another. I was team BK for sure - not Lobacheva & Avebukh. I do admit to rooting for Anissina & Peizerat - never quite forgave Ilia for splitting from Marina. I was team VM thinking DW would never catch them - then I had to root for my home kids - another team that took from the same teachers as me and who I watched grow up. I liked the Duchesnays but did not love their rough edges. The CAN team that hurt both me and Toller was Petr/Janoschak - so much potential - such an ugly ending. Punsalan & Swallow lost me with the Citizenship fight with Tanith. To this day I love Tanith & Ben! Naomi Lang was so elegant and beautiful but often injured and Chernyshev could do anything. At the end of ice dance practice with about 5 skaters most nights (me with my lowly Silver dances) - I would watch him take two strides and land amazing jumps. I also really liked MFD & PL - so creative. I remember watching her as a junior and loved how strong a skater she was and so feisty. So I guess I run hot and cold. I loved a lot of what Piper & Paul did - but again I went with my home kids C/B who I watched grow up. I was a bit torn as I really loved Chock with Zuerlein & Samuelsson & Bates. What can I say - I support my local talent!

I was Tracy Wilson & Robert McCall all the way!

Rob McCall liked to freak out other dancers in practice sessions by doing triple loops and salchows in his dance blades :wonder:.

Before either of your times (if that's grammatically correct), but for a brief couple of years in the 70s, Canada's Berezowski and Porter had a lot of followers -- mainly because Barbara financed part of her skating expenses with beauty pageant prize money. In 1976, their Olympics year, she was also Miss Toronto and a runner-up to Miss Canada. The press used to vote for their most photogenic favourites at competitions and she was Miss Olympics and a few others, like Miss Moscow News. (The Russian photographers loved her.) David said he could show up on the ice in ratty jeans and a sweatshirt and no one would notice since all eyes were on his beautiful partner.

Berezowski and Porter were the first ice dancers in the world to compete at the Olympics, in 1976. When they held the draw for skating order in the first segment, the CD, Barbara drew #1.
