Lajoie and Baker team up for Canada

So are they in it for the next 4 years? Jean-Luc is not exactly a spring chicken anymore and hasn't competed in at least 3 years.

I betcha not even they know at the moment. Let's go with the flow, not upset the applecart, allow the batter to be well-seasoned, to be whipped smoothly, to be poured evenly, and baked at just the right temperature to come out in due time looking delish and scrumptious. 😚😉😋

Psst, 31 is not 51. Check out the GP assignment thread re skater ages... Every athlete's journey is individual and unique!

This one has my vote. It's clever and is related to the standard last initials abbreviations (ie L/B). It can even be written La/Bakerie to highlight that similarity.
but it's too long.

At this point, I would just write Lajoie/Baker.

LaBa was for the initial purposes and because it means over there in French... because that's where they are headed, France 2030.

There are two different reasons for team nicknames or abbreviations.

One is shortening the name (usually used when making multiple references in the same post or thread, and best after giving the name in full when first referring to them. For that La/Ba is an obvious choice. It's not much longer than the standard L/B, is understandable to those who expect the usual L/B, and actually has some meaning and is pronouncable.

The other reason is to show affection for the team, or one's "in" status, by using something cutesey and possibly obscure. LaBakerie fills this niche nicely.

sure but there is no need for the La... Marjo is represented by the rie. So Bakerie works and is simpler ;) Adding the La is just adding an unnecessary article :) and two more letters :)

In any case, you can call them any way you want :) I will stick to LaBa or maybe even Bakerie :) You could also go with Marjo-Luc if you wish :)

I would probably go with La/Ba because I want to be easily understood. I would use Bakerie if it catches on and everyone uses it.

(n) On Marjo-Luc or even worse M/L or M/J. I would feel like a pretentious blowhard if I used any of them.

I sit this discussion out because I almost never use abbreviations or portmanteau names for couples unless I'm typing in a big hurry. But I'd be amused if "Bakerie" caught on because it would be edging into ballroom dance territory, where in all lists and conversations the man's name traditionally comes first in partnerships. There's always a perpetual low-key grumbling from non-European fans about that, but no one makes a serious attempt to turn the names around.

What's wrong with just saying "Marjorie and Jean-Luc" or "Lajoie and Baker"?

Most of the time when nicknames or initials are used, I haven't a clue who is being talked about. And it takes far too long to try to work it out. So, when I come across a post that does that, I just give up reading it and move onto the next post.

You can always call them by their full names. Sometimes it's necessary, sometimes it's possible but in many threads, it's just not easy to do so. For instance, in live action competition threads, when things go fast, some users, like myself, like to go with quicker versions that people understand because we are live, watching these skaters... so it's not rocket science to get that LaBa is Lajoie-Baker when they are on the ice or in the KnC. Using the full names, takes longer, gets redundant and sometimes, posts are getting too slow to write and end up appearing when other skaters are on. So I personally think it's okay to use shorter versions.

True, it is kinda obvious in the competition threads when they are actually on the ice at the time. But not so when thrown in at other stages of the thread. Or in more general threads.

I do relate with your point about posts taking a while to write and not appearing until the next partnership is on. I'm often guilty as charged at that! But, is it not better to be crystal clear about what you are talking about than to be quick in getting it up? I've had people fall out with me before when I have put something up in a hurry without properly explaining what I was getting at. So, I tend to err on the side of caution now.

As I have made obvious many times, I have never been a fan of just using initials. One of the problems is that there is nearly always at least one other partnership with the same initials. For example, whenever I see "Z/K" written, I still have to stop for a moment to work out whether it is Emilea ZINGAS / Vadym KOLESNIK (USA) or Miriam ZIEGLER / Severin KIEFER (AUT) that are being talked about. Even though one partnership are current Ice Dancers (who I have adopted!), and the other partnership are retired Pairs skaters.

In this case, it doesn't help that Ziegler / Kiefer retired the season before Zingas / Kolesnik got together, meaning there was no gap between them. At least with "LaBa", there it has been 20 years since fellow Ice Dancers Olivia LALATKA / Gabor BALINT (HUN) split.

Yes, I did have to go looking to find another partnership with surnames starting with those letters. I hadn't come across Lalatka / Balint before. But I am sure that other members of the forum will have, and will have that problem.

Well, a lot of people seem to like using nicknames and initials, so I guess the rest of us will just have to have our wits about us. (Or else just pass over the post).

I often watch a full event after it's completed while following along with the competition threads. I'm not often flummoxed by abbreviations, as I usually have printed the start order, but am sometimes confused by posts that don't indicate at all who is being discussed.

Oh boys, that is a massive pet hate of mine too.

Many a time I have been attempting to read a competition thread in time with watching the archived stream, and there are a pile of posts that don't say who they are about. And suddenly there is one post that does, and I realise that I have got three or four skaters / partnerships ahead of the pictures! :drama:

That is the reason I make a point of always including the names of who I am writing about when I am posting while watching LIVE. So that others coming along later don't get caught out like that. Because I know myself how frustrating it is when it happens.

CaroLiza_fan

and that's why, many of us like initials or short monikers. :). We are talking in circles.
I am guilty of all of your pet peeves... Sometimes I write : what a skate !!!! WOW !!! Clean as a whistle... or things like that... and forget to write the name.

But the live threads have this purpose. It's live commentary. Of course, I know what you guy are feeling : I have read threads after the fact too... but I also understood what I was getting into : late to the party, got to deal with it.

I would never blame someone who, while watching live, forgot to write a full name, or even just initials or whatever. That person wanted to cheer passionately during the event and it is what it is.

I believe the replay lounge was created to allow both to coexist.

If you like the excitement of live commentary, the competition threads are for you.

If you prefer a deeper experience, after the fact, the replay lounge is your best friend.

Funnily enough, I have never felt the urge to even go into the Replay Lounge threads. Because I always imagined that they would be like the competition threads get once the skating has finished - arguing about the results, and the judging, and the scoring, etc. And people shouting at each other. I can't be bothered listening to that.

Plus, I was biased against the Replay Lounge threads because of the way that during the Olympics, the competition threads got locked as soon as they opened. Firstly because it meant I couldn't reply to posts in the competition threads when I was watching back on demand. (I don't usually reply to posts afterwards, but sometimes I do). But mainly because I knew HBO Max was launching in the UK a month after the Olympics ended, and all the content from TNT Sports would moving there. And I was intending to replace the old Discovery+ links that I had posted with the new HBO Max links. But because the threads had got locked, I couldn't edit my posts.

So, you would recommend them, then. I'll maybe call in during the new season.

Some people do that. Some people do not ;). You have all the tools you need to read what interests you and skip what doesn't interest you :)

I am not sure I am following all of your channel talk so I will only say : I am glad they are locking the live threads... because it has the purpose of being a live thread and sometimes, some fans including myself, get passionate about a score, a skate an outfit... getting quoted hours, days, weeks after about a passionate post is not always fun :)

I am also glad that the threads are locked because indeed, there are some talks in the replay lounge that are less enticing for some fans (I couldn't care less about pictures of wrong edges or quarter short rotations... I mean the picture may show something but what matters is what the tech panel saw in the end)... which I can skip, but it allows for another level of discussion... if I personally want to discuss deeply the performance of a skater (or a judge LOL) I can do so but not in the heat of the moment like in the live thread. I can do so in the replay lounge, choose my words, organize my thoughts better.

I really like that there are now two different ways to follow competitions, with the live threads and the replay lounge.

And.. I cannot wait to see LaBa compete and how they will be received by fans. Both, in their former partnerships, had very strong fan bases.
