Kim to skate at 2011 Worlds: Press release

Aw, you missed her! 2005 Nationals was her one lackluster performance out of 13 times at U.S. senior Nationals. (She won anyway. :) )

Her Spartacus was one of her best short programs IMO. LP Bolero not so much...

no, I did not miss her... I watched her over and over and over and over again every year do the same program she'd done since 1997... they all bleed together... *snore*

Usually our golden era is the first things we saw and loved in fs when we were young and innocent. But there is always room for the newbies :)

God I sound like my mum....:rolleye:

My first taste of FS was in 1989, my golden Era starts in 1994 ;)

Yes but the skaters you mentioned skated before 1994:confused:, unless you liked them after they turned pro. Anyway I said the things we first saw and loved, not what just we first saw cause imy first memory of fs is Platov in Nagano.

golden era for me is professional skating from 1994 - 2002, so yes I mean professional, that being said those great skaters were great well before I was old enough to understand greatness, but I understood it all the same. I loved Scott Hamilton, Kristi Yamaguchi, Paul Wylie and Brian Boitano well before the Golden Era.

Well, as long as we're reminiscing - my first memory is Kristi Yamaguchi and the rest of the 92 crowd - Midori, Surya. And then came the Tonya-Nancy thing but the thing that probably started my path down figure skating fandom was Oksana Baiul's SP. And there's no point in lecturing me about the flaws in her skate because I didn't know nearly enough about skating to notice at the time and I only know that she touched me in a way that nobody had since x-mas. (Although these I'm glad I know that Oksana had a good non-flutz lutz :) )

But my golden era was definitely 1998-2006 I loved the competition between Michelle-Tara-Michelle-Irina-Michelle-Sasha. And then there were these two awesome skaters that stole the show - Sarah and Shiz

I still miss all of those skaters and I feel like I was lucky to have so many that I just loved watching. But thank goodness for Kim and Mao. I had to warm up to them, I won't lie, but for sure, I think they have already earned their place among the greats and have made this era of ladies skating very special.

So I definitely have missed Kim and I'm definitely upset about Mao's troubles. Hopefully Mao will prevail and Kim will have a successful comeback. Otherwise it's on to warming up to the next crop I guess. :ohwell:

I think you guys are talking about American golden era, no?

Going back to the topic, I remember Orser mentioning that Yuna's Arirang medley is even better than Gershwin - below is the exact quote:

“It is a fantastic program, the best I’ve seen so far,” Orser told the AFP “It is well beyond even her (Olympic program) Concerto in F. It’s a complete departure.”

No. We are talking about our own very personal golden eras - not trying to define what the most golden of golden eras was from any objective standpoint.
I believe I mentioned several skaters from other countries that got me excited about skating including Irian and Oskana and Midori.
I admit that, being American, I do like it when the American skaters can compete for the best in the world so I'm sure that added to my excitement in watching Michelle, Tara, Sarah and Sasha win multiple world medals. No apologies for that.

I did say I thought Kim and Mao have made this a very special era for ladies skating. As a plain old figure skating fan I'm very happy to watch the two - among the most extraordinary ladies skating has ever seen - no matter what country they come from.

No, MY Golden Era is what's considered the N. American Modern Golden Era FOR PRO SKATING... but there were many international superstars as well. Oksana Biaul and Katia Gordeeva were household names along with the American and Canadian skaters. However, it's just my rose colored glasses years... and it far surpasses what we're stuck with now... instead of one powerhouse overrated skater, we had a handful.

Winning a GP then was worth $30K US, probably equivalent to about $40K today and GPF or Champion Series Final was worth $50K, not bad for an amateur sport.

Y'all simply are too young to appreciate the greatness that was / is / will be forever more Michelle Kwan... and that's just about the saddest thing I've ever heard... SMH.

For me, the golden age of figure skating is 1999 - 2005 or as I like to call them: the Michelle / Irina Era. Best skaters, best quality, best programs, best competitions.

Back on topic, I've been bored to tears this GP season. Programs are wack, skaters look nervous, nobody's really FIGHTING for the win... and that disappoints me as a fan. Esp since skating has been boring me for the last three seasons. Including the Olympics. However, I am looking forward to seeing Yuna's new programs. Not sure about debuting a new set at Worlds, but that's her decision and one that I can respect. And honestly - does it even matter if she doesn't win? One thing being a fan of this sport has taught me, espcially in the year after the Olympics, sometimes its more important to just enjoy the skating and let the official & non official judges worry about edges, revolutions, and footwork hash it out while waiting for the collective competitive fire to kick back in...

No but you did eat moose when you were young. Who knows how much that can screw up a person's brain chemistry.

I haven't seen you around here in quite awhile! Hope your Thanksgiving was lovely and that the weather is not yet deathly cold in Richmond.

Moose probably tastes really good.

No, its not too bad but I am from Michigan, so we tend to giggle @ Richmond winters!!!

I've been lurking more than usual - there's only so much angst over subpar skating that I can take... How're things with you??

I was born in Michigan but I still hate cold weather. Unless I am ice skating (only inside the rink, though, I still prefer it to be warm OUTSIDE) or snow skiing.

We've gotten down into the 40's in L.A. a lot already this autumn/winter...I've been crying.

It was 32 this morning in San Diego. It was warmer in the rink at 5 am than outside. YIKES!

That being said, I really hope Kim's "Arirang" is one we will remember.

Global Warming is real, people!!! My son's new thing is trying to figure out just how early he'd have to get up to play hockey... The Monster Child with a stick along with cold morning rinks is not something I'm looking forward to!
