Kim to skate at 2011 Worlds: Press release

I emphatically second your last paragraph, MKFSfan! As the season gets closer, I'm feeling more and more excited by the possibilities. Even if I have to watch the whole thing in bits and fragments on YouTube.

As Mathman pointed out, I was referring to myself and to a certain extent my fellow posters who've all fallen down the rabbit hole of "This skater has a lock, the others are skating for silver & bronze." You simply cannot say who will win what - if fans picked winners based on past records vs. competition ice -the world would look a lot different. But to each their own. Let the skaters skate and the winners will emerge.

If I were to put money on Worlds, I'd go with either Miki or MiRai.
I don't think pangtongfan is claiming she's a psychic, she's "putting her (verbal) money" on her picks for skaters, just as you are...so I don't know why the need to lecture is being directed at her. Skaters will skate and the winners will emerge and people will be corrected or not. If you're so convinced that she's wrong, then why not let reality correct her? Not everyone is an uber to the same extent or in the same way that you are. For instance, I might qualify as a YuNa uber, but I've never been certain about predicting her best outcomes. Maybe that makes me a bad fan, but I'm just the type to hope for the best and let the chips fall. Still, I don't mind others who have stronger convictions, it's not like our forecasts make reality.

Anyway, as Olympia said in the YuNa news thread...Nadine, I find your posts endearing because of your enthusiasm, but it's strange. You prefer Mao, and I prefer YuNa, and I somehow feel you didn't quite do Mao justice :o: I agree with you that Mao getting herself back in peak form by Worlds looks unlikely, but I don't think expecting and hoping for some improvement by around that time is unreasonable. :) I'm not reprimanding you or anything, this is me sharing my view, because I like Mao, too.

If I were a betting person, I would still put it on YuNa, but a small amount, because I think Miki or another lady could pose a thread to her. The win isn't that important, though. I most want to see some brilliant performances.

I get the feeling that Yuna herself isn't too concerned about winning the title. In her press releases, she emphasizes her desire to dedicate her performances as a thank you to her fans. Hope this doesn't mean she will be using this as her swan song. But I am looking forward to Arirang. I love traditional Asian music.

You could qualify, but there are some who are waaaay more uber than you on this forum anyway. Ahaha.

And I totally agree. This season's kinda a let-down so far, but I'd really like to see some fastaaaastic performances soon!

Your comment (last sentence, really) made me think of Lu Chen's 1996 Worlds Short Program. It's definitely one of the most beautifully choreographed figure skating programs of all time. Loooooove her arm positions. :D

Yu Na Kim is indisputably the greatest women figure skater of all time. If Katarina Witt, Michelle Kwan, Sonja Henjie, Peggy Fleming, Kristi Yamaguchi, or Carol Heiss were in their competitive primes today they would all be eating Yu Na's dust. It is insulting some of you have the audacity to suggest the greatest ever has to do warmup events to beat someone like Miki Ando, one of the worst 1 time World Champions in history.

It's great to think this way. It could take a lot of pressure off her mind and shoulder, so she could perform well. Arirang is soooooo beautiful! I love it!!!

Too funny... I can't even respond.... I am so amused that I am literally unable to find the words... GO UBERS!!!!

C'mon Prettykeys... I don't lecture, you know better. I was just making a casual observation based on my first 200 posts as a diehard member of :bow:Kwan Nation  vs. the very mature, very reflective KW that I've evolved into... And yes, you are right - not everyone is an uber like moi - I'm unique and special - what can I say...

But seriously, I disagree about it doesn't matter who wins because it does. And while I do love Yuna's skating and her ability to move past the point counting that the long program has evolved into - I would prefer to see someone whose been in the trenches all season long win the World title. Does that mean I'm rooting for Miki over Mao or Yuna? Absolutely not. I'm actually rooting for MiRai as I've been sooo bored with skating over the last three years that I'm ready for the next crop of would be champs to take over the spotlight. 2006-2008 were great years because the newbies were really fighting for each medal. And it was interesting to watch.

But today? Sloppy skating. Boring programs. Wonky, limited jumps. Other than the Olympics, I don't remember the last time I saw passionate skating from the top four. Given this reality, I'd love to see skaters ranked 5-10 really battle it out for the hardware. I'm not sure what's going on with Mao because fixing technique shouldn't destroy your overall skating and Miki is Miki... I can't help it - I always want her to do well because I loved her guitar concerto & Merry Christmas performances so much that I'd like to see her do well at the end of a season vs. just the opening.

This hope of mine, coupled with a little less uber and a bit more maturity & understanding about how the current version of CoP works fuels my doubt that Yuna can not compete for the season, incorporate the new changes in the system and then simply win Worlds. It shouldn't work that way. And if it does, what does that say about the state of Ladies Figure Skating.

Oops, I meant "it doesn't matter to me"...which is also a fib. You're right, it does matter, but it's not what I hope most for. And yet, at the same time, I do. One can't help but root for their favourites to have the best outcomes.

Aww, is this the real Kwanford Wife? Those are totally sweet and fair reasons, and I could see a judge seeing it this way exactly, too. It didn't occur to me to look at it that way. I guess that's why phrases like "YuNa waltzing in to grab the gold" were used, it seems almost unfair if she does that, and figure skating would be better promoted by supporting participation in more than one event. To that end, a Mirai or Miki or Akiko win would be preferable, and talent-wise they are totally deserving. Well, in my heart of hearts I'm doing the uber thing, but I'm not completely against such an outcome either. (that is, if they bring it!)

I don't know, I still think it could happen, and it just says that it's the post-Olympic year (and that YuNa is indisputably the greatest figure skater of all time! ;) ) It explains why Miki also said her focus would be to have more fun, and why Mao has timed her retooling to be now. It's kind of like a pause before the next wunderkinder hit the scene (especially the little Russians) and the "veterans" start to re-arm themselves. It wouldn't be such a disaster to me.....hehe.... (the YuNa uber that I am)

P.S. I didn't know pangtongfan was a boy.

Maybe come March she will be the worst 2 time champ. :)

If she did win in March (which isnt happening for sure anyway but hypothetically) yes she would indeed be the worst 2 time World Champion by a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGEEEEEEE margin. It would take another 1000 years for a skater as one dimensional and all around weak in many ways as Ando to win 2 World titles again if that were to happen.

And for those who think I am being hard on Ando, here is Ando's skating in a nutshell- good jumps but not nearly as good as her peak 4-6 years ago, weak spins, pitiful spirals, ok footwork, ugly positions, two foot skating, no choreography, no interpretation, the posture of a camel, good basics, sometimes adequate speed and sometimes slow, ugly positions, lack of transitions, lack of presence and command, boring, and did I mention ugly positions.

LOL indeed. :sheesh: And Dick Button wouldnt qualify for the Lp nowdays, invalid comparisson in general.

But I just realised that Yuna 's senior years are too little, only 4 years, she is young and she could stay around for more years, i mean it is a shame with such talent to stay only for a quad. She has the same age as Mao more or less, and Mao is staying I guess till Sochi.
And the russian wonderbabies come eligible in 2012-2013 (some next year also) , although I dont think they would be a direct threat to Yuna.

I sure hope YuNa has the endurance to stay around until Sochi, because as good as she is, she has the potential to get even better, in terms of artistic maturity, positions, and other aspects. Maybe the fact that she has the OGM and a World championship will relax her and let her have more fun with the next stage of her skating. She had a job to do, and she's done it. Now I would love to see her take chances and branch out a bit, and since the phenomenal pressure is off her (I hope!), she'll be able to explore skating in new ways.

I really hope so. Her country should accept her decision whatever it is.

Pangtongfan should stop exaggerating. :disapp: Like what I said I just want Yuna to skate her heart out.

So the worst 2 time champ in history will beat "the indisputably greatest figure skater of all time" twice at Worlds!

Ando is not capable of beating Kim at Worlds or any other event. Kim can only beat herself with multiple major finals and Ando would have to skate lights out, which is what happened in 2007. However 2007 wasnt even prime Kim yet. I expect prime Kim could have those type of falls and still beat Ando skating lights out. Add to that Ando isnt the caliber of skater she was in 2007 anymore anyway.

Anyone who thinks the judges would ever let Ando beating Kim without Kim bombing majorly is off their rocker though. Especialy when Ando isnt even doing impressive triple-triple combos which was by far her best asset at her best, anymore.
