2011-2012 Program Stuff

The best part, doris, is that I/K are also using "Hip Hip Chin Chin" in their SD. How silly (especially since V/M are keeping it for their SD).

ITA. Someone definitely needs to get Morozov some new CDs. Last year, Florent and Javier had the same SP music as Brian Joubert and Daisuke Takahashi, respectively, and this year he recycled some of Javier's old Pirates of the Caribbean LP for Alena Leonova's new SP.

Is this some kind of strategy that I cannot quite understand?

Florent also had some overlap with Tomas Verner.

I have to admit I am really bored with the music choices this year so far. Is it so hard to come up with something original and new??? There is a ton of music out there waiting to be discovered!

I am totally with you. Both the skaters and especially the choreographers are either lacking any imagination, or are lazy. I would use another word but is offensive....

BTW, V/M' Samba routine, "HIp hip, chin chin." must be based on this performance. some part are very close.
Excellent Latin dancing by Yulia/Max

Enjoy

You are about...a year late to the party, we posted this when we found out last year what music they will skate to, but nonetheless perhaps some new posters are around who didn't see this, which is a masterclass prodancing

I think the Choreographers are to blame in music choices and not the skaters. They are going for safety and they know something already used has gone down well with judges and they know what sort of choreography needed for that piece.

Interestingly so far no Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No2 but I should imagine someone will have it?:disapp:

Looks like Spartacus is a popular choice this year :disapp:

We might have to rely on the European skaters (who have not gone across the water to ie Wilson, Nicol, Dickson) for something different well lets hope so. The obscure skaters seem to use something different do you all agree??

We can always rely on the French for something different or probably go to Mr Rodriguez, Damiani is getting popular (Joubert - All for you, Armonia, Didier-Romantica Rhapsody)

Also a Mr Karl Hugo is getting popular with Ice Dancers now, I bet Mr Goldstein been left out in the cold a bit, but he did mess up with aboriginal dance of Domnina and Shabalin.

Ice Dancers are going along the route or an arranged piece with Mr Hugo's piano rendition of the piece mixed in:

His list includes

D/L 2002 Madame Butterfly (remember that dress?)

C/L 2010 Gardot Melody

D/S 2010 La quete

now W/P with Lara Fabian's piece for the 2012 FD

singles

Dube and Davison's blowers daughter (there best routine)

Cynthia Phaneuf used Karl for her Your so beautiful SP (i think it was her comback year)

The Flying Finns

Lepisto

SP?
LP Miss Saigon (cuts not known)

Korpi

SP Over the rainbow (I believe same as last year)
LP I got Rhythm - Gershwin I believe

Both LP's of the leading Finns not exciting for me and not breaking new ground - Pity

I abhor "I Got Rhythm". Maybe it's because I've heard (and still hear) it alllllll the time especially through my elementary years and it's just so grating. Even when effervescent Mirai skated so well to it I still disliked the music.

Who else is using Spartacus?

Another I&K article says that it is the Ave Maria by Caccini
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fme36nswdJw

Isn't that the Belbin and Agosto Ave Maria?

Apparently, lots of people say that the music was composed by Caccini. The story is that Vladimir Vavilov wrote classical music but didn't like to put his name down so he used Anonymous or an old composers name. It was his intention for some reason. That is why it's not actually by Caccini but he often gets the credit for this music.

Zhang/Zhang for their LP I think

It seems that Z/Z has changed their lp Spartacus they prepared for the last season due to the change of the rules, but I don`t know what`s their new choice. They remain their SP.

SO glad L/C changed their FD. Not sure Shibs should have chosen such a vanilla piece, and really not branching out from their program last season. Guess they're playing it safe with what works (at least, what worked last season)...hard being a sibling team, but I feel like they should be a bit more audacious.

Shibutani's choice is way too repetitive, tons of foxtrot rythms in that movie with Glen Miller music.
And I disagree with the opinion of them being siblings, have that limited choices to choose from, there are many genras they could tackle, outside of foxtrot. They could have done broadway for example, but that takes a lot of artistical flair and I think they are too imature for that. Playing it safe might prove to be costly. Not too speak about the fact that Pechalat / Bourzat will have home court advantage and they will like to capture what they have left slipping through their fingers.
The judges could have the perception they are too unidimensional.

IN did an interview with the Canton dancers, and V&M's programs are now announced.

The SD will be a remix of their FD:
HipHip ChinChin by Club des Belugas, Temptation by Diana Krall (for the rhumba, and Mujer Latina by Thalia. I'm surprised they are going to stuff all 3 selections into the shorter format.

Their FD is to the 1957 musical Funny Face

.

V/M will tackle something similar with the Shibs, in that musical you have foxtrot and tap dances. For them is a new venue, I hope they will make the most of difficult footwork and knowing they have beatiful matching lines, they will be do fine with foxtrot (they have done it in their junior years, long time ago)

Not sure Igor and Marina are going to let them play it safe. I have a feeling this season they will be working on more difficult and intricate lifts (of which many complained about their simplicity last year) and overall power in their skating. Plus, the mood of this season's FD and last season's seem totally different. While "Smile" was very reserved, gentle and smooth, the new music calls for a more Broadway feel with big showmanship. It's not a gigantic change in style, but it's noticeable. I'm not sure why you think they are too immature to pull this off, because Broadway and show isn't exactly the most "adult" and serious theme out there.

Probably yes, they will have new lifts a new concept and so on. But it still feels safe. The music may not be as foxtroty/waltzy as last year's and may be more jazzy but essentially the ideas and music are so similar that it seems almost the same. Every year, it is great for a couple to not only change the music, but also the mood. It would be great if the Shibutanis can prove me wrong, but I have a hard time imagining them with any emotions other than "I am having a great time dancing this waltz which is why I am smiling." Their skating shows little maturity and their programs are neither uplifting nor passionate. However, I still think they will have a great season with many medals. Technically, they're amazing. Something is just lacking. The thing that divides a good skater from a great skater is emotion. If they are not willing to tackle a new idea and want to skate similarly two years in a row, that is just not very good.

I agree that with the Shibs snatching a medal at worlds they should be taking the next step this season. This music choice does not seem to be it. It seem as if they are thinking we can't move up from here right now, so lets just not lose too much ground. I would love them to do something classically elegant, like Cinema Paradisio again, maybe quality classical pieces of music that don't have a pre-ordained story like Mozart or Beethoven.
