Mirai Nagasu

Meh, I'm not big on Mirai's exhibitions. I'd like to see her do something a little less pop driven and a bit more "artistic growth-y"...but that's just me. I'm spoiled from Michelle Kwan (Dante's Prayer, Fields of Gold, Winter) and now Mao Asada (Ballade, Jupiter). I'd like to see Mirai dig a little deeper, that's all...

But, that layback was awesome! People who complain about her free leg and the turn-out of her foot need to watch that! Really good position and really fast...very nice.

Me too))

But assuming she really likes them I just enjoy her having fun.

I agree about layback. Compared to Glassier Falls it was rather fast. Also her jumps look fully ratified for me, that's great, too. (even though they're the simplest she does)

Being SCARED to take the ice doesn't necessarily mean you don't trust your training, it can mean you need a different process for mentally (and physically) preparing for competition.

It's interesting because there are many different sports psychology "processes" but they all lead to the above in some way. A good sports pysch can help a competitor delve into their deepest concerns and work to replace those concerns with confidence BUT the competitor needs to be honest about what those things are to be able to work through them effectively.

ITA. Also, some skaters do better when they're actually nervous (like me). If I am relaxed, I tend to pay less attention to details, and focus more on finishing the program, rather than one element at a time.

Yeah, me too. But I liked this performance a whole lot better than her exhibition from last year which i just didn't like at all. I guess Mirai is just Mirai. She's irresistible in her own way even if she isn't as soulful as Michelle (who is?).

If Mirai gets her stuff together, Agnes has a breakout year and Alissa manages to keep up what she did last year, the U.S. ladies just might be in decent shape. Fingers crossed.

re: kwanatic's post

yes, this layback afficionado watched and noticed the huge improvement and said, much better! hurray! good work, mirai. :)

i think i also saw gorgeous lines on the camel spin, and a catch foot spin that's elegant because mirai did not drop her leg in order to grab the blade. i still hate blade grabbing in general, but that catch foot spin was a thoughtful touch in mirai's program. when i see skaters like mirai pay attention to these details, it gives me hope that skaters still care about the beauty and art of figure skating, even in the age of COP, when good posture isn't worth any more points than hunched-over-like-you're-about-to-fart-in-somebody's-face posture.

ITA. I'm a spin aficionado as well and Mirai is definitely one of my favorites to watch. I really wish she'd go back to the combination spin she had during the 2009-2010 season. It showcased her speed and positioning so much better and left a much bigger impact than the one she had last year. If you check the protocols from then versus what she did last season, you can see the judges preferred her other spin as well. Judging by videos of Glacier Falls, I think she's going with this or this for this season. I miss the old spin...:(

The second of the Glacier Falls spins is one that she has used for quite a while. (The one with the sideways leaning layback & the bent kneed weight-bearing leg version of a I spin, starting with a layback with curiously unappealing foot position) I have never liked it very much, but it has generally scored well for her, except when she blew it entirely.

I, too, prefer the 2009-2010 season spin. I'd like it even better if it didn't have the bent legged I Spin. I'd like all 3 spins better if she had something other than a bent legged I-spin at the end of them.

I'd actually count Mirai's I-spin as one of the better ones. She's one of the few who can actually manage to pull her leg vertical and keep her standing leg straight.
By the end of this spin she's pretty much vertical: leg fully extended, back standing up and not hunched, and her standing leg is pretty much straight.

Thanks for that observation, Kwanatic, and I agree with you. I wonder why her Frank and Lori changed it. Maybe just to show something different, which is understandable.

I also agree with Doris about the I spin though. Mirai's is one of the better ones but most of the time her standing leg is bent and it just looks forced and uncomfortable. Of course, it's one of my pet peeves. I think that about every skater who does the I spin except Sasha Cohen. All I hope for Mirai is that she doesn't make silly mistakes with her spins this year. Good luck to her at Neblehorn! Hope she gets off to a solid start.

Her combo spin probably got changed to accommodate rule changes for spins and to possibly make it easier for her to attain a L4.

The combination spins that Mirai showed at Glacier Falls should only be scored as Level 2 and Level 3, according to the current rules. Difficult variations only count a maximum of twice per spin, so in her Combination Spin in the SP she had 4 difficult variations but that doesn't matter because only 2 of them count. In her LP combination spin, she had 1 difficult variation and then another difficult variation held for 8 rotations.

While Mirai won her forst international title at Nebelhorn this week end, after looking after looking at her protocols, I would be quite concerned.
The constant UR calls she keeps getting for years by now will always will be a liability and she seems to have her edge in the flip and lutz changing from one event to the other.
that means her technique is at least unstable if not poor.
Here at Nebelhorn she was called for flutzing both times in her LP, back in february at Taipei she was called for a lip.
At some point I have to also question Frank Caroll's ability as a technical coach,. Is he getting too old? Or it is only Mirai's fault?

^ Well, I think the Nebelhorn tech panel was a bit on the harsh side. Plus, it's early in the season. There's still time left to "iron out the kinks" during the GP.

I think Marai is becoming the next Sasha in terms of what the judges and public expect. No matter what she does I think the judges are looking for flaws. It must be difficult for her. I hope she is learning to look the other way .

I think she did pretty good knowing she is a late bloomer.Yes, the UR's seems to be a consistent issue for her but her jumps tend to look better a few competitions into every season.

I actually think she looks great out there and promising for the GP's. I am sure she is eager to reach the GP final this year and knows she will face stiff competition in both her events.
The SP looked so much better (despite the 3Z) at Nebelhorn than it did at the Glacier Fall event, there are some very nice moments and the 3L is spot on.

The interesting thing with Mirai's program in general is that they often give you a completely different feeling if they are done cleanly (at least for my naked eye!) and not like for example Lepisto's that looks good overall despite several technical errors.
I love this wow feeling I get when Mirai is "on" like her Nationals 10 SP/LP, Olympic SP/LP, Worlds 10 SP and 4CC LP...That is when she is number 1 for me :p
