So nostalgic. I understand the criticism of school figures in competition, but even the harshest critics must acknowledge that something important was lost with the decision to eliminate them.

Looking back on things, was that decision justified? I think, on balance, probably yes. But that doesn't mean I don't have regrets.

Well said.

At least, there are enterprising and concerned skaters who competed figures and knew that if they didn't band together to do something, figures would completely die out. Thus, today there exists the World Figure and Fancy Skating Championships, held every year in October, on black ice. There are many videos on YouTube. Increased interest was spiked a few years ago when Debi Thomas got in shape to compete (she was a very good compulsory figures skater back-in-the-day). Former U.S. men's skater & multiple World Figure and Fancy Skating champion, Shepard Clark, encouraged Debi to compete. 😊

Yes, @BlissfulSynergy I recall seeing videos of that figures event.

It was promoted pretty heavily by Dave Lease, back in the days before the controversy surrounding his airline crash statements.

He actually did great service to the skating community with his promotions of events like this and his in-depth interviews with skaters (including Shepard Clark and Debbi Thomas, who you mentioned in your post), choreographers, coaches, etc... I was not a fan of the gossip fests and the "rejudging" of events and nonsense like that, and certainly not of his ham-fisted comments about that tragedy, but I am not one of those people who will not acknowledge that he did some good work, as well.

There's really not been a good replacement for his more serious content like interviews... sure I've seen a few pop up on random Youtube shows, but I'm kind of over the format of fans behaving as though they are experts and pontificating on what needs to happen to fix programs, skaters, coaching situation, musical selections, etc etc. like they are the would-be saviors of the sport.

Yes, @TontoK, I agree that TSL posted some good interviews. It's too bad that DL is mostly a reprehensible, snarky gossip, sometimes 'used as a tool' by a few people in the sport with an agenda. It was beneficial, though, when there were those seeking to spread a positive agenda, such as the interviews with Shepard and Debi, to help promote World Figure and Fancy Skating! Lease befriended a number of people he interviewed, including Paul Wylie, who later gave DL skating lessons in Lake Placid, which DL posted. It was highly educational watching Wylie teach! DL also posted instructive lessons he took from Viktor Petrenko.

TSL and DL continue to have a following on Patreon. I am not a follower, as I would never pay for content from DL. I do see that he's still active under-the-radar. DL, a few months ago, posted on Patreon an interview with the son and daughter of Dick Button. 👀 Most likely, it's because DL had previously made connections with them in regard to a greatest 'Dick Button witticisms' highlight video he had compiled. Perhaps Button's children are unaware of DL's offensive comments regarding the young skaters who died in the plane crash, the day before their own father passed away. I often wonder whether Uncle Dick had heard about yet another plane crash killing members of the figure skating community prior to his death.

Fortunately, there have recently been posted on YouTube some very good mainstream podcast interviews with skaters, including Max Naumov, Danny O'Shea, Alysa Liu, et al. In addition, P.J. Kwong's excellent interviews over the years, most recently individual YouTube podcast interviews with Tracy Wilson; Brian Orser; and Scott Moir. As well, Polina Edmunds posts some wonderful interviews on her Iron Butterfly podcast, recently one with Danny O'Shea and Ellie Kam (weeks prior to the Olympics). This Week In Skating also posts good interviews. There are a number of excellent print interviews with skaters and coaches, including here on GS. Jackie Wong has posted some podcast interviews, including an excellent one with Mark Hanretty. Wong also posts conversations with skaters in which they review one of their well-regarded performances, e.g., there's an episode featuring Jason Brown. USA Today's Milan Magic show on YouTube, hosted by Brennan & Boitano, has very good interviews with Carol Heiss Jenkins; Nancy Kerrigan; Paul Wylie; Dorothy Hamill; Scott Hamilton, et al.

Posted in Nathan Chen's fanfest on GS is a recent conversation between Adam, Ashley, and Nathan, sponsored by the USOP Museum in Colorado. I also posted a link to this interview in the recent thread about Alysa Liu, since they discussed the effect Alysa's approach to skating has had on other athletes.

In addition @manleywoman has recently posted new interviews on her revamped website, which she shared here on GS (with Timothy LeDuc; and with Alexa & Chris Knierim). The @manleywoman site has some great archived interviews as well. It's an invaluable resource.

There have also been a number of very good skating review shows that have been launched on YouTube over the past year, including The Skating Session; Blades & Banter; et al. It's been great to see and to enjoy.

I saw this on YT a few days ago and thought about posting it on GS but got sidetracked. It's an amazing bit of skating history; thanks for sharing! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I don't know if this has been shared yet re a woman on IG who got banned simply because her real name is Alysa Liu, and META assumed she's an imposter. :palmf: Good grief!

Holy bleep! 🤦🏻‍♀️
