I'll start with Malaguena-many skated to this oft used music. I think Sasha's 2003 program was the best musical interpretation. Who is your best interpreter of the music? Who moved you or amazed you with choerography.

There are many pieces used, used, overused. Please add on a warhorse and who skated to it the best. Post videos if they are there. I know, mea culpa. I want to find Sasha's best 2003 season performance of Malageuna to post.:)

I don't know if it was over-used by 1990, but if the only time I ever had to see someone skate to Scheherazade again, it would be on YouTube: Midori skating her LP to that music at the 1990 Worlds. Nowadays, I have to turn the sound off when I hear that music start for a skater, even Yu-na. :)

Maria Butyrskaya's interpretation of Malaguena in 96 and 97 in her free program was very good, very sultry
 
Sasha did quite well with a lot of overused pieces of music. Malaguena (I never even particularly liked that music until I saw her perform to it), Swan Lake, Dark Eyes, Romeo & Juliet...

Concerto d'Aranjuez was done very well by both MK and Takeshi Honda.

Rach's 2nd Piano Concerto: I don't think anyone's quite done it justice (I really love this piece, so I'm picky about it) but I thought Lu Chen came closest. Sale and Pelletier's orchid program looked like it had a lot of potential; I was very disappointed when they went back to freaking Love Story.

Meditation from Thais: Oksana Baiul did a gorgeous exhibition to it

Nessun Dorma: Meno and Sand

Umbrellas of Cherbourg: Tessa and Scott

I agree about Yu Na's 'Dance Macabre' and 'Sheherezade'. I liked her '09 programs better than her Olympic ones the following year.
 
Dai's "Bluse for Klook" is the best ever. he just needs to pull out a perfect technical skate to it, and it'll go down in history as one of the all timers.
 
For me, the best interpretations are the following:

Chen Lu's 1993-94 LP to Joe Hisaishi's Nausicäa of the Valley of the Wind
Carolina Kostner's this year's SP to Shostakovich's Allegretto from Trio no 2
Kim's SP to Danse Macabre
Kiira Korpi's SP to Somewhere over the Rainbow.

Daphna Have to agree with you there, when I heard Dai was going to skate to it, I personally thought "oh no" not original (over used) and at that point Usova/Zhulin FD in 93 (i think the first time the piece was used) was the best and really was their music but Dai has delivered it to its worthiness, as you say if he nails everything "OH BOY" be so GREAT!!

LOVE the interpretation and all the innuendo's within the program, he could win GOLD with that one......:biggrin:

Sasha's program's always very good, shows off her style!!

Michelle Skated to Ikuko Kawai's version of Aranjuez, which is still the best, the more classical rendition by rodrigo well Joannie Rochette was good for me there.. - that program transformed her.

As for the overused Piano Concerto No: 2 I hope a lot of people can agree, but no one has come close to Chen Lu, that program especially world's 96 was breathtaking - Michelle and Chen double gold there.

Yu Na Danse Macabre "BOY" that was good (best rendition), loved her OO7 too though........

Oddly enough, the best Cabaret I ever saw belongs to Chock & Zuerlein last year. Even though they weren't the greatest dancers, the choreo and the whole piece worked for me.

I have very little to add, except that there's an unusual solo interpretation by Katia Gordeyeva of "I will Wait for You," the song from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg in 1997. I'm not saying that it's better than V/M's--in fact it's kind of rudimentary at that early stage in Katia's solo career--but she gives it an convincing emotional simplicity.

Gordeyeva also did a pretty riveting Mahler Adagietto at the memorial program for Sergei. In fact, I kind of thought that she had effectively retired the music. I was impressed with Virtue/Moir's Mahler program in terms of their skating, but it took me awhile to feel that the music was theirs.

The great thing about a thread like this is that any performance that's cited makes me think of other performances that are also lovely. For example, I adore Takahashi, but as Doris says, Rahkamo/Kokko also did a simply enchanting version of "La Strada"--they were a wonderfully inventive and expressive couple who were underrated by judges but always prized by fans.
